I had planned on making phone calls for our candidate for Congress here in NC (www.larrykissell.com ) while I waited on my daughter today. I sat down in the rocking chair on the porch outside her orchestra practice, arranged the papers and pen on my lap and flipped open my phone. I suddenly had a huge sense of deja vu, but instead of a dreamy feeling, it was a more tangible 'really been there' moment. I realized that 6 months ago I had been sitting in that same chair, facing the same tree. The only difference was that the tree was in bud and spring was in the air. Today the air is starting to get cooler and the leaves on the tree are turning red and it brings into focus that we've been working on this election for such a long time. Six months doesn't seem like that long but when you factor in all of the emotional ups and downs of volunteering with campaigns and the heated discussions that have worn us all out as we make our case for Obama, it feels more like a year.

I sat there and thought about all the phone calls made and all the doors knocked on, the insane people who repeated right-wing talking points as gospel, the dirty old man I spoke to the other day who was creepier than words, the lovely, thoughtful people who really want this country to get back on track, and the sad and desperate people who tell me their stories and how they are barely getting by and that they've given up on having a voice in this country. It has been a roller coaster, we've celebrated helping someone understand our candidates better and deciding to vote for him, we've been angry at nutcases we can't talk back to on the phone because we are the voice of our candidates, and we've laughed out loud at the hilarious responses we get sometimes (we really should have been writing them down). It suddenly hit me that "THIS IS IT!!" We are three short days away from the first votes being cast at our Board of Election. Have we spoken to enough people? Were we able to help them see that they have a better choice than who we have in office now? How many will come out to vote? Three days to start getting out the vote and 24 days until we declare a new president!

This is the most important thing I've done in my life, more important than bringing my children into the world because this will affect their lives and the lives of so many for many years to come. This is bigger than anything I could have done, and I take it very seriously, maybe too seriously. I don't think I could have had it any other way.

We're almost there everyone!! We can do it - YES WE CAN!!
