that are in the background shaping the decisions. Assange is anti-establishment and therefore the enemy. If Manning went directly to the MSM - chances are he wouldn't have gotten very far. In this day and age we need a person and a media like Assange and the Internet to be able to accomplish what Ellsberg did back when he did it.
It is interesting to me that there is more animosity directed at Assange - who is really trying to out the establishment and do right by the American people - ver...

I thought Obama was a genuine progressive. We were duped.
Even the TeaParty candidates that sold their line of BS to the electorate are now going back on their words.
It appears that most everyone that runs for office - says what they think the electorate want them to say and then when they get elected - they cave and do their own thing or serve the corporatists and get corrupted by the system.

Why isn't he or the WH debunking the Huff Post story?
I think the handwriting is on the wall. We saw how the French handled it with the raising of the retirement age. Even with the protests by the French people - they went ahead and raised the retirement age.
We're seeing it again in London with the protests by the university students. I don't think that they'll be successful either and the Brit govt will screw them too.
The MSM in this country has played down both of these protest...

Do you think the President is trying to avoid having to pass on bad news to us?
After this week - I now more than ever think that Obama never intended to be more than just a one term president. He is saying that he has to deal with the tough decisions. I think he is resigned to the fact that these tough decisions are not endearing him to the American people. In a way I feel bad for him - BUT - I feel worse for ourselves.
When just two short years ago he took this country by storm. He...

I was wondering if anyone knew of a GPS device that also warns one of Red Light Camera intersections? Any help as to what I should buy would be appreciated.
Those of you that already have a GPS device - if you were going to buy a new one - what model would you replace your current GPS device with and why?

realize that this is a concerted effort to bash Obama and the Dems and render them impotent in their governing the country. It's coming from Obama and the Dems from all sides - MSM, corporations, SCOTUS, Chamber of Commerce, the wealthiest of America. They don't want their gravy train upset and they will do anything to put them out of power.
Ask yourself - where is all this money coming from in this time of great economic strife in this country.
This is a war folks. They are trying to ke...

I'm going to a Medical Design & Manufacturing meeting tomorrow in the Chicago area. The keynote speech tomorrow is entitled:
"Staring Into the Abyss—What Does "ObamaCare" Really Mean for Medical Technology in America?"
It is described as follows:
In this fast-paced presentation, Dr. Scott Gottlieb of the American Enterprise Institute dispels the myths of "ObamaCare" and offers his real-world predictions of what it means for medical technology in this country. Participants will leave with an...

I don't think there is a 'statute of limitations' on war crimes. The fact that actual government documents are being exposed that prove that they knew they were lying to us in my mind is very telling. Someone, somewhere is pushing for this info to come out and in my mind it is not a coincidence or just some historian trying to record the history of BushCo.
Really the Dems couldn't start investigations on this matter when they took office. We were in crisis mode and if the economic matters...

with these documents released under FOI - there is concrete proof.
Interesting that this is coming out right when two new books are scheduled to be coming out. One by Dubya himself and the other by Rumsfeld. I wonder if they're going to have to go back and make some edits now that this information is out? It will be harder for them to lie about this now.
I don't think the statute of limitations ever runs out on 'war criminals'. Maybe there is hope yet that we will see justice done....

"A Sorry Band Of Men" Who Pervert Religion Attacked The U.S. "IN HOPES" Of Demoralizing And Dividing The Country.
Looking at the shape this country is in on Sept 11, 2010 - I would have to say that this 'sorry band of men' were pretty successful in demoralizing an dividing the country.
Actually - they were aided and abetted by another 'sorry band of men' - BushCo and the Repugs.
I guess we can throw in Faux News and maybe the media in general as well.
I'm thinking if Bin Laden really ...

I was in Grant Park in Chicago the day he was elected. The mood there was one of elation and relief. It was the happiest crowd of people that I ever was in and it was a big crowd. What happened?
My guess is that many people are buying the MSM's craptrap. The MSM seems to be piling on Obama every chance they get and the MSM seems to always take the side of the Repugs, the RW crazies and the TeaBaggers.
It doesn't help that the Dems don't pull together and defend the President either. ...

I was talking with a friend the other day and he came up with the idea of a National Job Telethon.
He thought that it would have been great to hold it on the upcoming "Labor Day" (get the tie-in) but didn't want it to interfere with Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Telethon. Another day would have to be picked. But just think of it as a real "Labor Day Telethon".
The theme of the telethon would be to "Put America Back to Work".
Essentially callers would call into the people handling the p...

I heard him on the Rich Sanchez program (here's the link: http//(Link) I encourage you to listen to this whole segment before you comment.
He is advocating a "Guest Worker" program - in essence give the illegal immigrant the status of a "guest worker" but not put them in ahead of others that want to get into the country taking the legal path.
This seems reasonable to me. What's wrong with that idea? Go ahead DU - have at it.

Seriously folks - I think this is something that needs to be discussed and examined. I'm really not interested in funny takes on this - I'm interested in genuine discussion on this topic. I look at this country now and the state we are in and it suggests to me that things have changed to the point that perhaps most if not all Americans have a different perception of what the American Dream is today. Is there one over-riding American Dream or do we all have our own take on it? What might be t...

we were there lobbying on the hill for some issues regarding our profession. Anyway - he is a self-avowed Tea Partyist. He was advocating replacing all the members of Congress - both House and Senate. Hates the Dems. Stuck up for the corporations. Bottom line - everything he said was actually shooting himself in the foot. He is an educated man and well respected among his peers - but very, very misinformed and tinged with a bit of being a racist. He hates Obama.
So - this is another...

We hear that "Change takes time" and "Washington is Washington" and we are also fighting an uphill battle with years of melding the system into what we have today; years of destruction by the Right; a media and corporatocracy that don't want the change; greed; etc.
All these - and probably a lot more factors control - just how much change can be made and how fast things could change. It took decades to get us into the situation we are in now - it can't just change overnight because we have - a...

will they hail BP as hero's for stopping the gusher? Will they thank BP for stopping the gusher?
I'm just thinking ahead. My opinion - BP was negligent and criminal to begin with. Eleven men died because BP cut corners. I will be happy that this gusher would be stopped and further destruction to the Gulf will be minimized - but - I cannot forgive BP for the negligence; their criminality and the destruction that they've caused to our environment since the explosion. It really starts well ...

Here's what I'm talking about. When there is a disaster anywhere in the world - the U.S. responds with aid, money and support. This disaster in the Gulf is a U.S. disaster and I'm just shocked that we haven't really heard anything from heads of state of other countries offering any support to help the U.S. in this time of need.
Surely there are countries out there around the North Sea as well as the UK that have knowledgeable people that might be able to help. Why haven't we heard from th...

I'm sure that someone is putting together a screen play right now for this. This oil gusher has all the makings of a formulaic disaster movie. Explosion. Fire. Survivors rescued on the Gulf. Environmental destruction. Gusher in deep water that can't be plugged. Potential for global calamity. Politics. Money. Environmentalists vs Big Business. Villain's and Hero's. A President's legacy in question.
Think of the movies about asteroids hitting the earth. Floods engulfing the planet. Volcano's and ...

What was discussed? What deals were made? Did this task force do anything - even remotely - to cut deals with the oil companies that might have some impact on this disaster we're facing in the Gulf today.
Here are some excerpts from Wikipedia about this Task Force:
Most of the activities of the Energy Task Force have not been disclosed to the public, even though Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests (since 19 April 2001) have sought to gain access to its materials.
After several yea...

Does Anybody Think That Karzai Speaking Out Against Westerners & The U.S. Is To Give Him Cover......
when the U.S. military this summer begins their planned offensive in the Taliban heartland of Kandahar?
Do you think when Obama was with Karzai recently - that they schemed this up so as to provide Karzai some cover by his own people. You know - make it look like he was not backing this offensive and that the U.S. is doing this without his approval. So as to give him some credibility that he isn't supporting the U.S. going into Kandahar and the resultant death & destruction.
Just a thou...

if one has a comprehensive energy package that includes development on all the alternative fuels - like solar, wind, nuclear, etc - then the oil drilling off our coasts begins to make sense.
I keep hearing that with the areas that the President wants to open - that the oil taken from them wouldn't make that big a difference to wean us off foreign oil. That may be right if we're thinking about today's usage of oil.
But if in the interim - before those fields kick in and begin to pump oil...

particularly those in their early 60's. Their premiums will rise over the next 4 years until this law kicks in for them and they will still be subject to pre-existing conditions and would have a tough time switching to a less expensive package. If they remain relatively healthy - they will be paying rising premiums with no benefit to them. Then if they turn 65 by 2014 they fall into Medicare coverage. But in those 4 years - basically - the insurance companies have them by the balls. They ...

Congressman (not a deserving title) Lipinski again makes the wrong decision. His legacy will be that he voted against the single most important bill to come before the Congress in his tenure in the House. When you read his statement - you would think that it was a statement from a Repub. He might as well be. I am totally disgusted with this guy. He doesn't have a feeling for the people in his district. It was stated in the March 21, 2010 Sunday Chicago Sun-Times that 57,500 of the constit...

would be insured should this get passed. Lipinski is a Stupak holdout on voting yes for this bill. In my mind 57,500 votes is a pretty substantial number of votes that shouldn't be neglected Congressman Lipinski. Why don't your office in Washington take calls. You've basically turned off your phone because you don't want to acknowledge the people in your district on this issue. You are a joke Congressman. You don't deserved to be in Congress. We're going to put you on the unemployment lin...

Here Is What I Just Received From My Congressman - Lipinski (D - IL 3rd) On HCR - Help Me Answer Him
This is his message to his constituents:
"With a final vote on the health care reform bill expected next week, Congressman Lipinski has been fighting to make sure that the bill does not include federal funding for abortion.
So far, House leadership has not released a copy of the reconciliation bill that both the House and Senate will have to pass in order to make substantial changes to the Senate health care bill. Congressman Lipinski has numerous concerns about the Senate bill as it stands...

I guess this is a naive question - but - I went through grammer school in the 50's and high school in the 60's and college in the 70's. I have to say that I got a good education during that run. Now I hear of all the problems in schools - with students, teachers and parents.
Our school systems have deteriorated since my education. Why? What happened to change that? Can it be blamed on the politicians? the parents? the students? society in general? reliance on computers and electronic...

The ten most recommended threads posted
on the Democratic Underground Discussion Forums in the
last 24 hours. Rants & Ramblings
I intend to use this space to post those day to day things that occur that really irritate me: 1. People that use cell phones while driving should stay in the slow lane. 2. It takes longer to check out in a grocery store now with barcode checking than it did when checkout people punched in the price on the old cash registers. 3. Running the gauntlet of people smoking outside of places where smoking is not allowed inside. 4. People not using turning signals to signify lane changes or turns. (This was brought up in a thread and reminded me that this really irritates me). 5. Drive-up windows. Cars waiting in drive-up window lines wasting gas. Are we so lazy we can't get out of the car to purchase something. Drive-up windows should be outlawed because of the potential of wasting gas. 6. Lack of customer service - everywhere. If you don't do your own research and know what you want to purchase - it is hard to find a salesperson in the retail enviroment that can help you make a purchase decision. You know what I mean. Ask a sales person a question - they give you a blank stare - and then they begin reading the shelf labels you already read before you asked them the question. Visitor Tools
