Two women in their 80s and infirmed were strip searched at JFK by some creepy crotch sniffing shitbag TSA employees. Of course, everyone points at everyone else and the denials fly. "Not me" "Wuddn't me" "We gotta follow the rules" This organization needs to be disbanded. Yet, more common than criticism of them is defense of them. It seems to me that anyone who defends the TSA is a scared shitless coward who is afraid of boogeymen. People who need some authoritarian bullshit to feel "safe". ...

Let's define "shit" as anything you think it is. For me, it is the financial mess, the outright plundering by the 1% over the 99%. It is the way we are fed Orwellian bullshit when we have real needs - like the "healthcare" voodoo that we got when what we wanted was single payer. It is the ongoing wars, even as we wind one down we're sharpening our knives to start a new one in a neighboring country. It is our near total abandonment by those we elected to represent us. It is the ever shrinking mid...

I heard on the radio today that Harry and the Senate Dems wanna pass an extension of the FICA tax holiday and pay for it with a 3% hike on taxes on wages over a million bucks. The repubicans oppose this, saying such a tax hike will affect 1/3 of small businesses, who they say are the real job creators. Think about that. Taxes on personal incomes over one MILLION dollars are enjoyed by one third of small business owners. Do YOU know a small business owner? I do. In fact, I am one. Now . . ....

In light of the current talk of cuts to Medicare and Medicaid, I am instantly taken back to the run up to the passing of the healthcare "reform" bill. It started with Obama himself talking about plain old single payer. Lots of people like to deny that he ever spoke of this, but most us know, really, that just isn't the truth. From there, we went to that wonderful, ill defined term, the "public option." That was the plan that was so vague that we were all free to imagine it smelling like roses. ...

This can't be spun. Many will try, of course, but the fact is, we now have a Democratic president who is actually proposing "cuts" to Medicare and Medicaid. I'm sure some will see it as adjusting the program and reducing waste and overlap; that sort of thing. But it is being sold by a Democratic president as "cuts to Medicare" and "cuts to Medicaid." Let's assume the cuts are benign. And small. (The fact is, we have to make such assumptions as this president, as is his way, will not be specifi...

You can argue about all the conspiracy theories you wish about paid left wing opposition to him and the Professional left, and all that other bullshit. But when it comes down to it, the average, non-influential, non-insider lefty (like me and many, many others) is unhappy with Obama for things he did all on his own. For me, the biggest was not even **trying** for single payer. Now, you can say he didn't have the votes or whatever else you wish in his defense, but he didn't even **try**. He IGNO...

. . . . nowhere NEAR a presidential campaign. There was a presidential candidate once who was a Roman Catholic. He had to spend a great deal of time trying to convince his country's citizens that he would not allow that to influence his presidency. And he wasn't even all that great a Catholic. I just can't imagine that a swaggering asshole who holds a public religious revival featuring the most extreme of his country's religious extremists as a way to kick off his campaign, a man who endorses t...

The lie: "We need to do something about the deficit in order to pass a debt ceiling increase." The two are only tangentially related. One causes the need for the other. But they are NOT connected. This is how you raise the debt limit: (Image) All the rest is 2012 political posturing. Or a planned theft of our meager remaining wealth.

Before you unrec and snark at me, hear me out. Anyone who uses drugs is a criminal. And it is in that sense I use that as my description of her. Troubled soul might be more apt. Gifted talent is certainly a true description. Trend setter is, too. Quintuple Grammy winner fits. So does tragedy. It is my firm belief that drug addiction is a personal choice only at the first experiment - and maybe not even then. Addiction is a disease, not a moral failing. We all see the high profile addicts and...

I remember so very clearly watching Alan Shepard bravely sit atop a large metal cylinder, not knowing if he would return. I recall feeling real worry as to whether or not John Glenn would be able to actually fly around the world and get back down safely. The whole nation worried . . . and stood transfixed as he so bravely did just that. There were only seven of them in the Mercury program. We all knew their names. Some of us knew their wives names and the kinds of cars they drove. They really ...

On so many levels it is wrong. First, it is a weasly position. It is a politically expedient way of trying to have it both ways. It allows one to avoid having to actually take a stand. Second, it doesn't help anyone who has a legal marriage in one state be accepted as married in another. Forget moving to such a state. Imagine a gay couple on vacation in one and having one partner be hospitalized. That's anyone's nightmare. If your spouse can't see to your well being, that is one of the worst t...

Today was just another day in Fuckyouville when AARP said they'll stop opposing cuts to the safety net. Many of us have always known they were a scam. Now they simply have stopped hiding it. It has long been true that your government is simply self preservative - except for that part that works directly with your owners. Unions are dead. Liberal voices are silenced. The media lies to you. Your elected officials work for only one thing: reelection. You're on your own, boys and girls. Form y...

Then what? If he were brought back alive, would we just have pictures similar to this to see over and over for the next decade? (Image) Would seeing such a picture over and over again convince the doubters we had him? Really? At the end of the decade, we'd still have only an image on a screen or a sheet of paper, really. And the doubters would still doubt. The only thing that would convince them would be a receiving line, where we the people could, if we chose, file past him and . . . . what...

I have been a partner in an actual small business for nearly twenty years. In the entirety of that time, we have never felt over regulated or, for that matter, overtaxed. Now, its true that we're not the same sort of "small business" you guys love to feature but never really identify. We're not the local beer distributor (like Cindy McCain, for example), or the local John Deere dealer who handles scores of millions in farm equipment sales. We're three owners and one employee. Half a million in...

Naturally, many DUers pointed out this error and much discussion ensued. The people who pointed out the error were perfectly correct. The fondled part of the woman's anatomy was her vulva and not her vagina, as she stated. Now think hard about this next bit: How does this matter? The story was about the intrusiveness of TSA screening. The story was her feeling of intimate violation. The story is the erosion of our rights. The story is anything BUT her genitalia's nomenclature. This sort of ...

The repubicans want to FUCK YOU UP. They want to set the stage so that it is more likely you will die sicker and earlier than you will now. They want you to get a small check from the government and use it to try to buy health insurance. They want you to find someone who will cover a diabetic with heart problems and cancer. They want you to find affordable care as you have a heart bypass looming. They want you to find some benevolent company who will cover the cost of your heart-lung transplan...

Would you be okay with some thug with a gun and mask coming up to your mother or grandmother, sticking the gun to her dear, white haired head, and stealing all her money? That's pretty much what you MOTHERFUCKERS are proposing we do to seniors. Not quite as dramatically, not quite as quickly, not with an actual gun or mask, but the effect of that smug MOTHERFUCKER, Ryan's hailed plan is essentially that - stealing all her money. Do you REALLY think some insurance MOTHERFUCKER is going to sell o...

Think about it. Maybe this is why we are where we are these days. Iconic Anomalies. Those really quite rare people and circumstances that cause us to brand everything its category with the same broad brush. Here are a few: "Welfare queens driving Cadillacs". There were one or two such people discovered many years ago (the 1970s?) in a welfare fraud investigation in New York City. One that made the evening news was an obese black woman driving, indeed, a Cadillac. She had even gone so far in h...

That's pretty much what goes on in government these days. We watched all that delicious drama play out over the last week.Down to the Wire. Avert a Crisis. Stalemate. Compromise. All the usual cliches. Meanwhile, the really heavy lifting remains undone. Lest you think this is about Obama, please disabuse yourself of that right now. The sentiments I am expressing have been expressed for many years. For decades. Not always in the same way, but always about the same Big Thing. Political Cowardic...

We all live somewhere. We all have stuff where we live. We have pots and pans and furniture and televisions and computers and cars and books and coffee makers and electric blankets and a beer bottle collection and Grandma Adele's broach and Dad's college graduation Hamilton watch and your kids' toys and maybe even your old toys from when you were a kid. It all fits in the place you live. Maybe its tight, but its all there. Its comforting knowing that. Its your home and that stuff makes it parti...

Who would have thought that the loudest, snarkiest, rudest, most breathlessly insistent voices on DU would be pro war? I recall a time back in the bush years (in the 04 primary season) when any Democrat who even thought about voting for the Iraq War Resolution couldn't find enough support here to mount a campaign for dogcatcher. Now, if you oppose our bombing Libya, you're lower than whale shit. Well, if that's the case, then I'm way down there where the Orca feces falls. Yeah, I know...

. . . . styrofoam coffee cups. "Green the Capitol" was an initiative of Speaker Pelosi. It was widespread, it was effective, and it served to seed other such initiatives by creating a market for biobased disposable servicewares. The lowest hanging fruit was lighting. It has been entirely changed to CFLs and of late, LEDs are moving in. Biobased disposable foodservice products replaced their petroleum based alternatives. Equipment exists on site to turn that material into a far smaller volume, ...

He termed him "highly teachable." He said he has almost completely embraced the principles the GOP has long espoused - more troops, tax cuts, kicking the deficit can down the road . . . . . Maybe I just need to get back to sleep. The whole fucking world has gone mad. Oh . . . . . and for the internet asshole of the year: There is no "d'Allesandro Family." If you actually knew what you're talking about instead of making shit up, you'd know that while even little Providence had a family, ...

I have been posting against the creeping fascism that is the whole point of agencies such as TSA and their ilk. The refrain that is the headline of this post is being heard more commonly. I predict that if we hear this much longer, the next thing we will see is increased surveillance of our citizens. Just this past Monday, the Washington Metro started rousting and sniffing random system riders. (Link) I have predicted Xray portals at malls before you are allowed to shop. We already tolerate dr...

It didn't have to be this way. These tax cuts expiring has been known since that fucking monkeyman put them in place. We held all the power and we didn't do jack fucking shit about it. Now, at half past the eleventh hour, we find ourselves negotiating with the repubicans? See, that's the problem. No one was ever *really* espousing letting the middle class tax cuts expire. And to have *that* as your debating point today is disingenuous obfuscation. Everyone wanted them extended. And maybe even i...
