Let's be accurate about this. The Dems had 5 more votes than they needed to WIN. They eventually lost because the Republicans do what Democrats will not: they FILIBUSTERED this bill to shut it down.
Say the word. "Fil-i-bus-ter." And use it. Show everybody how unseemly and disgusting it is for the GOP to talk for hours to defeat a bill that would have provided much needed rest for troops on deployment tracks.
Tune in to Rachel Maddow's show on Air America, in process at posting time, for more about this point.

http://karmabanqueradio.com/?p=514 Over two months ago, Seymour Hersh revealed that the US was financing Sunni extremist groups in Lebanon in order to destabilise the region, in particular, the Shiite powers like Hezbollah: THE REDIRECTION Is the Administration’s new policy benefitting our enemies in the war on terrorism? by Seymour M. Hersh http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2007/03... And, now . . . U.S. SENDS MILITARY AID TO LEBANON Story main points: ·U.S. has delivered military aid to Lebanon to fight militants in a Palestinian refugee camp. ·U.S. Congress approved a budget request of 770 million dollars in aid for Lebanon. ·The aid is aimed at strengthening Lebanese gov't headed by PM Fuad Siniora. WASHINGTON, May 25 (Xinhua) -- The United States has delivered military aid to Lebanon to fight against militants in a Palestinian refugee camp, State Department deputy spokesman Tom Casey said Friday. "I can certainly confirm to you that there has been deliveries of assistance from the U.S." Casey said at a briefing. "What the Lebanese are doing right now is trying to bring law and order and establish a rule of law in Lebanon and that is something that is in the interests of everyone," Casey said. Late on Thursday, the U.S. Congress approved a budget request of 770 million dollars in aid for Lebanon, with 280 million dollars of that earmarked for military assistance to Lebanon. The aid is clearly aimed at strengthening the Lebanese government headed by Prime Minister Fuad Siniora. At least 80 people, including 32 Lebanese soldiers, have been killed in the fighting between Lebanese security forces and militants inside a Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli in northern Lebanon. http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2007-05/...
The Financial Times Ltd Published: May 11 2007 20:28 | Last updated: May 11 2007 20:28 Talking to Fox News, the conservative broadcaster, on his visit to Baghdad on Thursday, Dick Cheney said: “We didn’t get elected to worry just about the fate of the Republican party. Our mission is to do everything we can to prevail ... against one of the most evil opponents we’ve ever faced.” Back in Washington Mr Cheney’s Republican colleagues are showing growing irritation with the vice-president’s Iraq war logic. On Tuesday 11 moderate Republican lawmakers warned George W. Bush that their support for his Iraq “surge” was rapidly running out. Tom Davis, a congressman from northern Virginia, told the US president that in one portion of his House district just 5 per cent supported his Iraq strategy. The same growing unease applies with even greater force to Republicans in the Senate, who hold 21 of the 33 Senate seats that will be contested in next year’s congressional elections. Many Democrats believe that they could improve their narrow 51-49 Senate majority next year to a filibuster-proof 60 seats or more. Such is the Democratic party’s confidence that some Democrats are talking of bringing about the same kind of splits in the Republican party that so damaged their own party’s electoral fortunes following the Vietnam war a generation ago. “There are a lot of people on the Republican side who are not happy with the situation,” said Trent Lott, a normally hardline Republican Senate leader. http://www.ft.com/cms/s/9d14ba3c-ffed-11db...
The attorney for the so-called D.C. madam says that he's been getting questions from other attorneys about whether their clients might be the next to be named by Deborah Jean Palfrey. Her attorney, Montgomery Blair Sibley, says five attorneys have contacted him to ask if their clients are part of a list of 10,000 to 15,000 phone numbers turned over to ABC news. He says some have asked if accommodations could be made to keep those clients' names private.Palfrey is accused of running a prostutition ring in the Washington area, but she contends it was a legal adult fantasy service. Her next hearing is at 10 a.m. Monday at U.S. District Court. http://www.wjla.com/news/stories/0407/4188...
The demise of a call-girl ring and pending trial of an alleged madam claiming thousands of clients has the US capital riveted by the chance powerful men may now be caught with their trousers down, with a senior state department official apparently first to fall. Deborah Jeane Palfrey, 50, dubbed the DC Madam in local media, has been arraigned in federal court on charges of operating a Washington DC prostitution service for 13 years until her retirement last year. Palfrey has denied she ran a prostitution ring. Her company, Pamela Martin and Associates, was simply a "high-end adult fantasy firm which offered legal sexual and erotic services across the spectrum of adult sexual behaviour and did so without incident during its 13-year tenure," she said. Palfrey contends her escort service provided university educated women to engage in legal game-playing of a sexual nature at $US275 ($333) an hour for a 90-minute session, the Washington Post reported. But Palfrey has also hinted that she has a record of the phone numbers of thousands of more than 10,000 customers that could embarrass more the a few of the US capital's high-fliers. http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/world... From The Times April 20, 2007 22 minutes ago Tom Baldwin in Washington The US Attorney-General apologised yesterday to the eight lawyers sacked by his department, admitted that his own “mis-statements” about his role in the affair had caused confusion and then pleaded with senators to let him keep his job.Alberto Gonzales’s appearance in front of a hostile Senate Judiciary Committee was a humiliation both for him personally and for an Administration that is now rocked almost daily by fresh revelations of scandal or incompetence. On occasions Mr Gonzales appeared to be taken aback by the ferocity of his cross-examination from Republican, as well as Democratic, senators. “These attacks on my integrity have been very painful to me,” he said in his opening statement. Later, asked if he had considered resignation, he insisted that he could still do the job, adding: “Every day I ask myself that question. The moment I believe I can no longer be effective I will resign as Attorney-General.” MORE http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/worl... Russian President Vladimir Putin has criticised the United States for what he said was its "almost uncontained" use of force around the world. Washington's "very dangerous" approach to global relations was fuelling a nuclear arms race, he told a security summit in Munich. Correspondents say the strident speech may signal a more assertive Russia. The White House said it was "surprised and disappointed" by the Russian president's comments. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/63...
