President Obama today issued a memorandum "directing all agencies engaged abroad to ensure that U.S. diplomacy and foreign assistance promote and protect the human rights of LGBT persons."

Among the steps required by the memorandum are efforts to fight the criminalization of LGBT status or conduct, as well as to support the protection of LGBT refugees and asylum seekers.

<snip>

"The Obama Administration has made a tremendous difference in the lives of LGBT people in the United States and this new strategy helps to extend that presidential leadership across the globe," Solmonese said. "There is no question that the administration's record of advancing equality for LGBT people has been enhanced by the leadership of Secretary Clinton who consistently underscores the simple truth that LGBT rights are human rights."

According to HRC, the presidential memorandum is the first ever U.S. government strategy to deal with human rights abuses against LGBT people abroad.

Not Yet Fired Fox Reporter Who Outed Teacher's Porn Past Defends Actions

Mike Beaudet may in fact be Malden, Massachusetts’ least-favorite reporter ever, but while he still has his job at local Fox affiliate Fox 25 WFXT-TV, he and his as-yet unnamed producer are milking their story about a beloved high school teacher’s past work in gay porn for all it’s worth. Last night, Beaudet, went on-air to discuss why he did the “undercover” story, outing Kevin Hogan, but all he could come up with is a replay of the previous night’s story, sans the porn B-roll.

Apparently, as you’ll see in this video, Beaudet would be just fine if Hogan — whom we still don’t know if it even is Hogan who made the films — had made the films 20 years ago, rather than just last year. Apparently, when you make porn has something to do with whether or not you’re a “good enough” person to teach high school kids.

Interestingly, too, the story starts and ends with the “fact” that Fox got a tip and that’s how they started to pursue the story…

<snip>

There’s a “Support Kevin Hogan, FIRE Mike Beaudet” Facebook page, with more than 1400 fans, and a Fire Mike Beaudet petition at Change.org.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- President Barack Obama is renewing the U.S. commitment to ending HIV and AIDS on Thursday, setting goals for getting more people access to life-saving AIDS drugs and boosting spending on treatment of the virus in the U.S. by $50 million dollars.

<snip>

Obama is also announcing new initiatives to combat the spread of HIV in the U.S. Officials said he would direct the Department of Health and Human Services to increase funding for domestic HIV and AIDS treatment by $50 million. The White House said there are 1.2 million Americans living with HIV, and 50,000 new infections each year.

The bulk of the new funding - $35 million - will go to state programs that help people living with HIV and AIDS get medicine. There are currently more than 6,500 Americans living with the virus on waiting lists for medication, according to the White House.

The rest of the domestic funds will go to HIV medical clinics across the country, with an emphasis on areas where infections have increased, and care and treatment are not readily available. Officials said the additional clinic funding would give 7,500 more patients access to treatment.

The officials said Obama does not need congressional approval to allocate the funds. The officials requested anonymity in order to speak ahead of the president's official announcement.

Groton Town Worker Accused Of Using Water Plant To Make Moonshine

GROTON (CBS) – A former Groton Water Department worker has resigned after he was allegedly caught making moonshine on town property.

Groton Town Manager Mark Haddad confirmed that distilling equipment and some mason jars containing alcohol were found at the Baddacook water treatment plant last month.

According to Haddad, the setup was simple, consisting of “a hot plate, some copper wire and some bottles.”

“The biggest thing about it being in the water treatment plant, was the need for water to cool it down as you were heating up the stuff,” Haddad told WBZ NewsRadio 1030’s Bernice Corpuz.

Lots of legalese in this court opinion but it's a precedent "we conclude that Philip and Lewis are not entitled to qualified immunity because the use of pepper spray on the protestors' eyes and faces was plainly in excess of the force necessary under the circumstances, and no reasonable officer could have concluded otherwise.
