There will never be anything more incomprehensible than a man creating a charity expressly to allow him to rape children, but the wide-ranging enabling of Jerry Sandusky to do just that is almost as impossible to fathom.

<snip>

As Sandusky continues to enjoy free, unsupervised release following charges of 40 crimes related to child rape, the level of complicity in his appalling who-knows-how-long rampage of pederasty now appears to, somehow, extend beyond Penn State and State College, Pennsylvania.

Last July, Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett announced the “re-release” of a $3 million grant for the construction of what was essentially the pet project of Sandusky to “benefit” the children of The Second Mile charity he founded in State College in 1977.

On August 10, 2011, the CENTRE (PA) DAILY TIMES reported that thanks in part to Corbett’s grant and a subsequent rubber stamp from Centre County (PA) Commissioners - who actually sponsored the now-disgraced charity’s taxpayer cash grab - “The Second Mile Center for Excellence” building project was soon to be realized.

The right-wing Daily Caller website has been anything but kind to Occupy Wall Street, even going so far as to condemn the protest movement as generating riots, murder, and arson.

But when a couple of Daily Caller employees were at Occupy Wall Street this morning, it was the very protesters they had been demonizing who ended up helping them out. Daily Caller reporter Michelle Fields — who faced off with actor Matt Damon earlier this year over education policy — and videographer Direna Cousins both claim they were attacked by the New York Police Department (NYPD) while covering the raucous protests in the Financial District today. Fields added that Occupy Wall Street protesters immediately came up to her to offer their help:

“Direna had a camera in her hand and I had a microphone, and we were being hit,” she said. “When I fell to the ground I said at one point, ‘I’m just covering this! I’m covering this!’ And the officer just said, ‘Come on, get up, get up,’ before pulling me up by my jacket.’” “The protesters came up to me right away and asked if I needed any medical assistance. They were actually very kind and helpful. It was the police officers who were very aggressive,” Fields added.

The Daily Caller's Michelle Fields faced abuse from the NYPD and help from protesters.

Local comedian allegedly assaulted at a comedy club

<snip>

In court, Porzio was tearful. She was ordered to stay away from that family restaurant, an institution on Route 1 in Saugus.

Porzio’s father maintained that Sweeney said something derogatory about his daughter’s sexuality, but claimed that she regretted throwing glasses at him.

“I think she had a little too much to drink. She’s guilty of that, but I think he enticed her,” said Porzio’s father.

Steve Sweeney Attacked Between Shows, Police Say

Sweeney said he was approached by Porzio who told him she was offended by a comment he made concerning her sexuality. Porzio's father said Sweeney made derogatory remarks about her off stage, not during his comedy routine.

"He had approached the girls that she was with. And she had -- this is what she told me she said -- she had told him that 'Don't you think you're a little old to be' and then he made, that's when he made the sexual remark on her sexuality," Gene Porzio said.

BOSTON — The Massachusetts Senate has joined the House in passing a bill that would prohibit discrimination against transgender individuals.

The measure was approved by the Senate Wednesday morning on a voice vote. No senator spoke against it.

The House passed the bill Tuesday night but only after Democratic leaders moved to limit debate to one hour, cutting off many of the 50 or so amendments that had been filed by opponents.

<snip>

The bill still needs routine final approval votes in both branches.

EVERY Republican in the MA House of Representatives EXCEPT Dan Winslow voted AGAINST the MA Transgender Rights Bill even though their "Oh My God, straight men will put on wigs and hide in ladies rooms, ie Bathroom Bill argument" was removed with public accommodations in the passed bill.

Why Doesn’t MA’s Trans Rights Bill Protect Trans People From Public Discrimination?

On Tuesday, a Joint Judiciary Committee in the Massachusetts legislature advanced a six-year-old bill that would include trans people as a “protected class” in the state’s hate crime laws, prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity in jobs, housing, insurance, mortgage loans and credit—that’s good, right?

Well… the bill also shares a big flaw with a similar trans rights measure that died in Maryland just this last April—it doesn’t guarantee trans people the right to recieve proper “public accommodations” in hospitals, bathrooms gyms, restaurants, hotels or public transit.

The bill’s sponsors dropped public accommodation protections to garner Republican support for the bill—because letting trans people use public restroom will endanger daughters and wives, naturally. Jennifer Levi, director of Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders’ Transgender Rights Project says that the bill is at least a good start that takes political reality into account while laying the groundwork for public accommodation inclusion later on. But trans blogger Monica Roberts has called the bill an “unjust… civil rights malpractice”:

<snip>

Roberts at least raises one particularly powerful point: if cisgendered Massachusetts politicians wouldn’t accept a civil rights bill that denied them public access to bathrooms, transportation and hospitals, why should trans citizens?

Report: Greenhouse Gas Pact Created $500 Million For Massachusetts Economy And Added Nearly 3,800 Jobs

A new report from the Analysis Group reveals that the multi-state Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI) — created to “reduce greenhouse gas emissions through a cap-and-trade system” — contributed nearly $500 million to Massachusetts’ economy and created nearly 3,800 jobs over the past three years.

RGGI led to regional economic gains of $1.6 billion, including the $498 million is Massachusetts while investments in clean energy sector will save consumers $1.1 billion on electricity and $174 million on natural gas and home heating oil by 2021 — an average savings of $25 for residential consumers, $181 for commercial consumers, and $2,493 for industrial consumers.

While power plants have lost about $1.4 billion in revenue over the past three years due to “reduced demand and the costs of purchasing carbon allowances,” the consumer savings and clean energy investments “more than offset the economic losses.”

The program, which Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick (D) approved in 2007, holds 10 mid-Atlantic and Northeast states in a pact to cap and reduce carbon dioxide emissions and sell power sector emission allowances through auctions while investing the proceeds in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and other clean energy technologies. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie (R) pulled his state out of the program this year, calling it a “failure” and a “gimmick.”

Sweeney told police he was talking to friends between shows Saturday night when a woman threw a glass of beer at him.

Police arrested Erica F. Porzio, 24, of Revere, who they charged not only with assaulting Sweeney, but also the club’s owner, Steven Castraberti, who suffered a broken finger when he said he tried to restrain her.

Sweeney said he was approached by Porzio who told him she was offended by a comment he made concerning her sexuality during the show.

<snip>

“She was apparently angry about being made fun of. She started throwing glasses. Before they could get her outside, she kicked the owner’s hand and broke his finger,” the police report said. “Once outside, she bit him (the owner) on the right calf breaking the skin.”

Top 10 Worst Anti-Science Websites

The Internet is a dangerous place. It's full of resources, both good and bad; full of citations linking one to another, sometimes helpfully, sometimes not. Today we're going to point the skeptical eye at ten of the worst web sites in terms of quality of science information that they promote. To make this list, they not only need to have bad information, they also need to be popular enough to warrant our attention.

Many of these sites promote some particular ideology, but I want to be clear that that's not why they're here. Sites that make this list are only here because of the quality of the science information that they advocate.

As a measure of each site's popularity, I'm giving its ranking on Alexa.com as of this writing. Of course this changes over time, so I'm rounding them off to give a general idea of each site's traffic. Also, I'm giving its US traffic ranking, as these are English language sites and the worldwide rankings are skewed by sites in China, Russia, and the rest of the non-English world. For a starting point of reference, Skeptoid.com's ranking is currently about 40,000, meaning that 40,000 web sites in the United States get more traffic than I do. And, compared to the number of web sites there are, that number is actually not half bad — but note how it compares to some of these sites promoting misinformation.

Let's begin at the bottom of our list of the worst offenders, with a site that nevertheless has staggering amounts of traffic:

Remember that attack on Rep. Allen West stating that he'd been in sort of a motorcycle "gang" that didn't care too much for nonwhite people?
http://blogs.browardpalmbeach.com/pulp/201...

Well, it's true, West apparently admits -- 13 months after NBC Nightly News ran a segment detailing his ties to the gang and after the congressman denied it on multiple occasions throughout that time.

West changed his story Friday on a North Dakota-based radio talk show hosted by Scott Hennen in response to a question asking whether presidential candidate Herman Cain is being attacked because he's a black conservative.

Scott Hennen: Is it an attack on a black conservative because he's a black conservative?

Congressman West: "Oh come on, I mean you know I was the only black member of a white supremacist motorcycle gang, so liberals and there are certain others I would say even within our party that are not comfortable with strong black conservative voices, and I would say there are people that feel very threatened by that because we do stand on principle. We are someone or entities that are out of the mainstream, if you want to call it that, so liberals are definitely going to come at you. But I think you also have this inner fight within our primary candidates for that piece of the pie that they want to have."
