BIRD-SIGHTING IN GULF IS PROVEN FALSE (AP)
An eagle scout who said he witnessed a snowy egret in a tree where his troop was on a camping trip now believes that what he thought was a bird was probably just a speck on his protective gas mask. A spokesman for the Florida Wildlife Assn said officials were skeptical of the initial report as no egrets, pelicans, or terns have been seen off the Florida coast since the devastating oil spill of 2010 all but wiped out Florida's seabird population. The scout troop, which had been camping on one of the barrier islands despite environmental warnings, returned to Miami yesterday with recovered artifacts such as oil-crusted seashells and rotten but preserved-in-oil coconuts which grew until 2015 when all the trees suddenly died. In Washington, President Marco Rubio praised the scouts for their interest in preserving 'old-Florida history' - the way Florida used to be back in its heyday when tourism was the main industry and the rivers were full of edible fish. Florida's population has decreased by half since the oil spill. Florida retirees Justin and Kaitlyn McCollum worked at Disney World before its closure in 2017. They now live in New York City because (as ex-surferdude Justin put it) "we could no longer stand the constant stench of oil in the air and we are bird-lovers. NYC has such beautiful pigeons and starlings"

I had not used my Chase (formerly WAMU, formerly Providian) credit card in 3 years. I ate at a Bob Evans today and used it just to keep it active.
So,in 2007 my APR was 9.99%. Oh gee, look at it now! How long before people just stop using credit cards altogether thereby fucking the industry who self-induced their own demise?

The GOP was riding high in 2005 and well on their way to a so-called "permanent majority." When did the ceiling start cracking? Pick your favorite "moment of truth" or add your own.

My mastercard was declined at two places today. I called and found out MY CREDIT LIMIT HAD BEEN REDUCED FROM $4,100.00 TO $490.00 and I was overdrawn by $245.00. All this WITHOUT NOTICE (excuse the caps but I am pissed).

The CS rep says this is no way a reflection on me but a company decision to "reduce losses." Now I've had this card since the early 90s from HBSC which used to be called Direct Merchants Bank. I usually pay off the total monthly balance and have no late fees and very little interest fees. The rep says I will be getting a letter of explanation. Whoopee! Well, I told her what I felt about the situation and was abruptly connected to a supervisor who just gave me the whole story again. I said I wanted to pay the $479 balance due and cancel the card. She said "Just when do you plan to pay this balance?" I said "immediately when I get off the phone with you." She replied, "Are you sure you want to do this? Once I press this button you wont be able to get the card back." I said "What good is a credit card with a limit of $490 in today's society? Yes, CANCEL THE CARD". She then curtly said "Is there any-thing-ELSE I can do for you? Oh god, you can imagine the things I wanted to say with my acid tongue!

Bottom line: What is happening here? Is HBSC getting ready to go under? Anyone else out there with a similar story?

That was my stunned reaction in 2004 to Obama's convention speech. I thought "what a breath of fresh air - this guy's the new JFK." This part really got me:

"Yet even as we speak, there are those who are preparing to divide us, the spin masters and negative ad peddlers who embrace the politics of anything goes. Well, I say to them tonight, there's not a liberal America and a conservative America there's the United States of America. There's not a black America and white America and Latino America and Asian America; there's the United States of America. The pundits like to slice-and-dice our country into Red States and Blue States; Red States for Republicans, Blue States for Democrats. But I've got news for them, too. We worship an awesome God in the Blue States, and we don't like federal agents poking around our libraries in the Red States. We coach Little League in the Blue States and have gay friends in the Red States. There are patriots who opposed the war in Iraq and patriots who supported it. We are one people, all of us pledging allegiance to the stars and stripes, all of us defending the United States of America." (BHO)

I was on my feet jumping for joy! Imagine, a speaker at a major party convention DARING to mention that he has GAY FRIENDS.

Well, here we are. 1/20/2009. Phrophecy fulfilled.

How many other DUers out there experienced this exact same scenario?
I'm sure I'm not the only one.

who were NOT at Times Square tonight, did not go to your local Elks Club, not even to a local bar.......
with no family or friends around to witness Father Time make his annual exit.....
If you feel lonely or a bit sad because you have no one to share this moment with....
either by choice or by circumstance.......
Perhaps you are haunted with the feeling that no one cares:

Take comfort in the realization that right at this transitional moment there are thousands, perhaps millions of others out there JUST LIKE YOU.........
.....ergo.....
I (and the other DUers posting below) wish to YOU a very Happy New Year and a prosperous 2009!
..............you are not alone.

Both Republican Senators in those states voted against the auto bailout. Those 10 pricks cannot imagine what that means to this Kokomo Indiana farmboy with 12 extended family members who work for GM.

Stop ordering anything online from companies in those 5 states. Do not spend your tourist dollars in Charleston, Tulsa, Louisville, Atlanta, Montgomery. Do not buy foreign autos built in those states (who were given huge tax-incentives by those SAME SENATORS).
Instead, shop blue states online, buy GM, Ford, & Chrysler products. Plan vacations in the north - lots of educational places to visit in Chicago. Indiana has some great state parks, wonderful museums, Amish country, the Indy 500, and the Madison hydroplane regatta.

So who's with me? Let's go for a little red-state punishment.

Please don't paint us as a monlithic red GGG group. There are thousands of brave souls here trying to extract our state out of the southern GGG mindset.

Citizens here are worried (as they should be). Cities such as Kokomo, Marion, and Anderson are so tied to the automotive industry the shutdown of GM and other car plants would be a disaster on par with the dust bowl exodus. Parts stores, car dealerships, restaurants, video stores, music stores, even the post offices will see layoffs and loss of business because of tightened family budgets. The unemployment is already at 7% here. Social services are strained and will be overwhelmed by many more families applying for unemployment and food stamps. Small satellite towns of 500-2000 people (Russiaville, Sweetser, Akron, Royal Center, Roanoke etc will see population decreases as their auto workers move to other states for jobs causing their struggling gas station or small supermarkets to close. Taxes will have to go up and our schools and parks will suffer. It's a downward spiral. I doubt if we can count on our elected Pub officials (Burton and Buyer) to help. And lawmakers outside the midwest just don't understand how grave the situation is here with their ("let them go bankrupt") crap. I don't even have to put down in print what Bush (Let-em-eat-cake) thinks or cares.
My hope is that Obama will steer the situation to a wise resolution.
