Source: Los Angeles Times A group of venture capitalists is backing United in Purpose, an ambitious project that seeks to affect the 2012 election by registering 5 million new conservative Christians to vote. Reporting from Washington— Silicon Valley, the politically liberal technology hub, is an unlikely incubator of conservative Christian activism. But a group of its venture capitalists is backing an ambitious project that seeks to affect the 2012 election by registering 5 million new conse...

Normally I wouldn't inflict this stuff on you folks here. It's bad enough having to deal with it on a daily basis in my life, don't ya know. However, since Perry has decided to shine a national spotlight on his actions, and since we're all political here, I think this is relevant GD discussion. You just may be able to use this to catch the asshat in a lie later on. Perry a no-show in Bastrop BASTROP, Texas (KXAN) - Gov. Rick Perry canceled a walk-through of destroyed Bastrop neighborhoods Sat...

Considering the political theater surrounding this issue, I thought I'd get the new out here on the subject. When you read stories bemoaning how long it took Obama to sign this, and there are plenty of them, keep in mind it was signed within they day of it actually being submitted by the leaders of Texas. AUSTIN (KXAN) - Congressman Lloyd Doggett's office confirmed that a major disaster declaration for wildfires across Texas had been signed by President Barack Obama on Friday night, less than...

Source: Austin American Statesman A federal judge Tuesday blocked Texas from enforcing a new law that will require women to receive a sonogram, and hear about its results, at least 24 hours before receiving an abortion. U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks issued a preliminary injunction after finding that portions of the sonogram law, set to take effect Sept. 1, were unconstitutionally vague and violated the First Amendment by improperly requiring doctors and patients to engage in government-mandat...

Usually I'm not one to blame everything on Perry and the Texas Republicans. Sometimes things really aren't entirely their faults. You know, like the drought and hurricanes, my bad hair days, things like that. In this case their cuts are directly responsible for the loss of government jobs in the state. Which have greatly added, and will continue to add in the future, to the increase in unemployment in the state. The Texas unemployment rate hit 8.4 percent in July — its highest mark since 1987....

I don't know if this has been posted yet or not. I know I missed it. Dr. Donald Leslie, medical director at the Shepherd Center in Atlanta, has high hopes. "We want to cure paralysis," he said. "We want to stop spinal cord injury. How incredible would that be?" <snip> Although Atchinson's role was only to prove the procedure is safe, he believes it's already working. "I can feel that," Atchinson said, pulling the hair on his legs. After six months of the therapy, he said, he's able ...

Source: The Hill Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) will bring a limited package of oil spill response and energy measures to the floor next week, delaying action until at least this fall on a broader proposal that would impose greenhouse gas limits on power plants, senior Senate Democratic aides said. Aides insisted Reid’s decision is a nod to the packed floor schedule the Senate faces before it leaves in two weeks for the August recess, and that he he has not abandoned plans to try a...

In late April, just days into what has turned out to be the largest oil spill in American history, Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana, with the support of local parish officials, ordered the opening of giant valves on the Mississippi River, releasing torrents of freshwater that they hoped would push oil back out to sea. Now, reports indicate that the freshwater diversions have had a catastrophic impact on southeastern Louisiana’s oyster beds that is far in excess of the damage done by oil from the...

"Republicans are declaring an all-out war on unemployed Americans," said Reid spokesman Jim Manley. "Even though Democrats have the votes to give unemployed workers the safety net they...

Source: Associated Press Three months into the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico, the federal government's spill chief says a relief tunnel should finally reach BP's broken well by the weekend, meaning the gusher could be snuffed for good within two weeks. After several days of concern about the well's stability and the leaky cap keeping the oil mostly bottled up, retired Coast Guard Adm. Thad Allen said Tuesday that engineers concluded the risk of a bigger blowout was minimal and were getting c...

Source: The Times-Picayune The Deepwater Horizon's blowout preventer -- the key device for shutting off a wild oil well -- had a leak in the days before it failed to operate and BP did not comply with a federal regulation requiring the rig to suspend operations, a BP company man testified Tuesday. Well site leader Ronald Sepulvado told a Marine Board investigative panel in Kenner that before he wrapped up his stint as BP's top man on the rig four days before the April 20 accident, he reported...

This is an update from the joint hearings by the Coast Guard and the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, Regulation and Enforcement investigating the causes of the Deepwater Horizon oil rig explosion on April 20. After BP and Halliburton officials argued about the use of key pieces of oil well safety equipment called centralizers, it turns out additional centralizers were ready on the Deepwater Horizon rig but simply weren't installed. Centralizers are devices that are supposed to keep tubes in...

Source: The Times-Picayune A White House spokesman says BP's ruptured oil well is leaking at the top, along with seepage about two miles away. Robert Gibbs also says officials are monitoring bubbles that can be seen on an underwater camera. Leaks could mean the cap on the well has to be opened to prevent oil and gas from escaping elsewhere. The mechanical cap on the well stopped the flow of oil into the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday. Read more: (Link)

"Joe the Plumber" became a household name in 2008, but will anyone ever know the identity of the plumber who may have brought BP to the brink of stopping the oil gushing into the Gulf of Mexico. Six weeks ago, Robert Bea, an engineering professor at the University of California, Berkeley, received a late-night call from an apologetic "mystery plumber." The caller said he had a sketch for how to solve the problem at the bottom of the Gulf. It was a design for a containment cap that would fit snu...

In response to President Obama's Oval Office address on the Gulf oil spill which pivoted to clean energy legislation, Senator Lindsay Graham stumped for "expanded offshore drilling cause we're gonna need more domestic supply to break our dependency on foreign oil." Little problem: the ballyhooed link between domestic drilling and breaking our dependence on foreign oil is a myth.
