I'm reading this thread as someone born right in the deep of it. First, I don't blame the Boomers. They had the rug pulled out from under them. They're the Billy Joel Generation to me - Every child had a pretty good shot To get at least as far as their old man got. If something happened on the way to that place They threw an American flag in our face, oh oh oh. They had the rug pulled out from under them. They played by the rules. And now? Our parents are facing their so-called Golden Yea...

I rarely start new threads at DU - but my father has inspired me! I hope those of you that feel detached or angry at the way things are goin will be inspired by him too. My dad is a child of the Jim Crow horror. Born in 1941, he was raised in Talladega Alabama . . . And everything that implies for a black child in the 1940's and 1950's. He will tell you that a pivotal moment in his life was Emmet Till's murder. After attending Tuskeegee - in spite of his country - he joined the Army. He r...

Slavery had become 'racialized'. I'm watching this and while I appreciate the 'struggles' that poor whites went through to come to America? Compared to the legalized rape, kidnapping of children, horrific beatings, toes cut off for running away (my great great great grandfather Ragland was a victim of this - but he still got away the fourth time down into Mexico) . . . the short history of indentured servitude by blacks and whites (where one DELIBERATELY entered into the contract) has had a l...

Expect him to ‘wave a wand’ and fix things. There are three branches of government that needed to get their shit together the past two years. Health Insurance I understand the Health Insurance reform was ‘something’ – but it wasn’t Medicare For All. A simple structured way to allow citizens to purchase Medicare. I work in Telecom (wireless) and I’m telling you – it would have been simple to: 1. Create a new “Product” (assign a new billing code in the Medicare billing system to each indiv...

Okay – I’m watching MSNBC this morning and they are discussing the WH strategy of hammering home on foreign funding of the Chamber of Commerce. Willie Geist(sp?) says – Good strategy but it’s already been debunked by several news media outlets. Has anyone here seen or heard of which media outlets have debunked it? What investigative journalist has peeled back the layers of the onion and exposed this claim as a fraud? *scratching head* Wouldn’t that have been on the front page of the Times? ...

Forgiveness in this case would mean a lack of conscience. Well I have one. Nance, not sure if you are wholely familiar with the situation in France during and post WWII. My dear friend is from Lyon (lives there) and his grandfather was murdered in Montluc prison's courtyard at the request of Klaus Barbie for 'derailing trains' when his mother was a little girl. It's 64 years later and she's now 70 - but she's still a 6 year old little girl waiting for her father to come home . . . and he...

Updated to Add Link: (Link) I'm not going to 're-title' it with the stories title. They are referring it to as a fake 'political attack' - I identify it as a Racial Tinderbox. . . On Thursday, before police said the story was a fake, both the Obama-Biden and McCain-Palin campaigns released statements about the attack. "Our thoughts and prayers are with the young woman for her to make a speedy recovery, and we hope that the person who perpetrated this crime is swiftly apprehended and brought t...

The past few days - DU has been even better than it is. This is the third thread I have read on here that shows a depth of tenderness toward human beings, Americans - and exposes what we have become and will become MORE so if we don't stop the trend toward barbarianism, internal genocide (a Rwanda scenario), and division. Everything is well said - but a few items that have had me in a rage ::grr:: for a few years:  One detainee witnessed the rape of a teenage prisoner.  Boys ...

And I've been up this morning checking out the polls . . . I think what's significant was the lead Obama had going into the Debate last night. Having just taken that AOL poll - I find (as I have at other polls) the most interesting results the ones in answer to the question: Did the debate affect how you will vote? 290,633 Respondents No 76% Yes 22% I don't vote 2% I caught a little of Soledad O'Brien's post debate disco last night - and three people raised their hands to switch to Obama. ...

Why post this? Generally I don't play post/thought police - there are more than enough people at DU who are far more capable than I. But as to the subject of "Who is AT D.U.?" Nobody here is a McCain/Palin-supporter. So your question is irrelevant. Can you delete/edit and just put out there - Imagine that dumb broad in the White House <---- That would be the 'thinking' man and woman's burden for sure. I mean, she can't even pronounce nuclear - which makes me think she wouldn't be able...

I do agree with the theory/idea (call it whatever you want) of evolution. The spirit path says - the big bang was instigated by something . . . you can have an infinite end but not an infinite beginning. What disturbs me about these discussions is that they are always wrapped up in the bible. Be it King James, The Book, Roman Catholic, yada yada yada. I have to preface this with the fact that I'm a Practicing Unitarian (humanist), raised by a Baptist and Methodist, who attend a Parochial (Ca...

Re Sweet Sarkozy the American: McCain: We now have a pro-American president of France...which shows if you live long enough, anything can happen. Big problem. My love and friend is a businessman born and raised in Lyon. He has business interests around the world (kind of how we met). Brief discussion a little while ago (it's late there right now) and this quote came in on his English Translation - Daily Poli Buzz. . . his assistant pulls this together every Sunday/Monday morning and got it ...

Once again, a thoughtful post to put some sanity around the insanity that McCain showed on Friday afternoon. My only hope - my greatest hope - is that the media picks up on all of the points you've made. Somehow, I keep catching a talking head with a Democrat and a Republican. The Democrat tries to bring up these points, then gets cut off by a neodweebie monzweebie Republican and the talking head gushing about what a wonderful person Gidget is and how much she brings to the table. And no ...

Yes I am. Hear/Read me out. God help us if they steal this election. God help us. Romney at least was the Governor of Massachusetts. He has a sense of the larger world. My oh my - he speaks a second language. Now, if they don't steal it (the only possible way they could win it is to steal it). . .Romney will be back again saying, "Told you so." In the meantime I don't care about your gender. Fair is fair. She got a free pass for being a woman that other contenders for tha...

All of these talking heads keep saying, "She's a Hockey/Soccer Mom." They are lauding her earthy mom role. However, she does have a 4 month old special needs child. My thought is (because I love this about the French Social Security system) - is that most working class women could not afford to make this decision at all. The French actually give you MONEY - money to families - to help them in those first few years. While she is traipsing around the world - some young family with a new ...

Human beings get used as pawns - cheap and expendable ones - so evil men can flip humanity the bird, feed their egos, and pad their pockets. Sad fact is - most folks don't understand what NATO was set up for. :-( So April 4 years ago: (Link) Nato marks its eastward expansion All of the new Nato members were part of the former communist bloc Nato has been holding a ceremony to welcome seven former communist eastern European countries as members of the 55-year-old alliance. At risk of sounding like an isolationist/nationalist jerk . . . Pull out of Iraq. Shut down at least half our bases overseas (time for Europe to put on its' big girl panties and deal with it) - or at least those where they don't pay us to stay there. Germany, S. Korea, and Japan give us money. France kicked us out a long time ago. Fix the infrastructure We need a New Deal. No - really - we do. I write this as a Unitarian Universalist. I write this as someone who had a Catholic Highschool and University education because of the curriculum - not the faith. I write this as someone who has a Southern Baptist for a father (raised in that Church) and a Methodist for a mother (attended her church too!). This isn't 'political'. This is about our faith. Our beautiful unorthodox coloring outside of the lines faith. This is because we believe God is one, and supreme. This is because man...

With talk from Bush Co. asking for America to open up drilling on the Outer Continental Shelf and in Alaska I have to ask . . . If we were to do that - who PAYS for it? I did search DU to see if this had been posted before - so forgive me if I didn't do a deep enough dive and this is a duplicate. Factoids we are all familiar with: 1. Drilling in Alaska today - results in 10 years at the earliest. 2 Oil companies are sitting on 68 million acres of Federal land that could produce oil alre...

I belong to several forums - and they aren't all political in nature. One of them that was woman focused used to have a 'political' forum that was squashed a few months ago due to the division some of the members felt it caused the site. So what's allowed now is a private thread that those who wish to participate on can. I.E. The so-called "Die Hards". You know - after posting to that PT yesterday I came to discover something - and maybe it's myopic of me. I only want to have discussions w...

Who partially support it? For Ted Bundy - there's nothing we could have done. I think for serial killers who just suck up air it's okay . . . But not for anyone else. I actually fear for the drug dealer who kills someone during the course of a drug deal that would have possibly come up against a Ted Bundy or Gacy etc. etc. in prison. There's a chance that drug dealer could be reformed - if they live/make it out of there alive. Fat chance if we allow common  sociopaths to walk amon...

I get where you are going with this . . . Wish I still had the copy of NY Post from Thursday - or was it Friday? They keep repeating "Michelle Obama - never been proud of her country." Every chance they get. Then above that? A piece that no one really knows anything about Cindy McCain. I think that's your point - right? Where the f*ck are the constant references to the two adulterers? Where are the references to the addiction. Yeah yeah yeah and whatvevah! :grr: I know I know - "It's...

He was photographed outside of a school and a woman in headscarf is standing to his right . . . That said, the New York Post and The Daily News this morning have this story featured. Two totally different takes (Post is obviously conservative in nature) . . . If he had been pictured with ten women in headscarfs - the NeoCons would have on every single news source that "Obama Is a Muslim Based on the Company He Keeps".

Would he just shut up and go away!:grr: Bush said the U.S. has a big stake in being engaged around the world in trouble spots like Africa, Colombia, Lebanon, Pakistan, Iraq and Afghanistan. "It's in America's vital interest to help all these nations combat ideologies of hate," the president said. "It's in our security interest to eliminate safe havens for terrorists and extremists. It's in our national interest to develop institutions that allow them to govern their territories effectively and...

What is the price you are putting on your own head? Are you honestly saying that if one person says something "mean" about you on the Internet (of all places) that you will throw out your own convictions and not vote or vote for the opposition out of pure spite? Do you realize that that is an absolute impossibility? Or is it something more nebulous that you are demanding? Do you really take the words of some nominal supporter as more important than those of the candidate himself or the future of...

They've both run solid campaigns. Hey! They beat my guy Edwards! So it should be the 'turn' of who ever has the most delegates come August. Though - I have to admit I'm solid behind Obama now. Just got back from two weeks in the South of France - met people from all over the world - most of them "Lefties Like US!" :pals: Not just Americans, but the world - well they are waiting on the edge of their seats to have a Democrat in office come January. Seriously - we don't have the 67 Votes for an impeachment. The Democratic leadership in Congress is letting that little snot in the White House quite literally get away with murder. It seems like they are afraid to hurt his feelings or step on his toes . . . What if something really historic happened? Like the majority in the House removed their so-called leader . . . and replaced her with someone like - oh, say: Kucinich. Note: I'm supporting Edwards in the primary, however I'm sure man...
