A few preceding remarks about this article. First, what does this say about us as a nation when 25% of the people within any county need food assistance? Second, the statistics shatter a lot of misconceptions about those who use food assistance benefits; nearly 75% of those in Scioto County who receive food assistance do not receive any other kind of public assistance, even though 20% of the people within the county are living below the poverty line. (Though I think the guidelines for what our g...

You may be in an abusive relationship if: -- Your partner tries to control you by being very bossy or demanding. -- Claims you are responsible for his or her emotional state. -- Blames you when he or she mistreats you. -- Has a history of bad relationships. -- Your family and friends have warned you about the person or told you that they are concerned for your safety or emotional well being. -- You frequently worry about how he or she will react to things you say or do. -- Makes "jokes"...

I am prefacing some excerpts from a newspaper article with some comments of my own. The article below, an account of drug and hunger crises in Scioto County, Ohio, paints a bleak picture of the landscape in far too many places in this country of ours and how "hope" is little more than a platitude to the people of Appalachia. You won't hear too many of their stories on the nightly news because, well, it's an ugly and unglamorous tale about an America so few really know or want to know and tucked ...

Well, this was to be expected. The homophobic contingent in New Hampshire are now emboldened by the defeat of equality in Maine. I would really like to know how gay marriage has threatened or unsanctified Rep. Ulery's marriage. Does he believe only couples with children should be allowed to marry? How about gay couples with children? How about folks who choose not to have or cannot have kids? This state by state battle must end up in the SC. We will never attain equality, with all the rights an...

Do you know what message I, as a working-class West Virginian, got from Obama this primary season? That we don't count. That he can't be bothered. That he'll jump like a frog from a hot rock to the defense of mine owners and outdated laws that rape the land and kill its people, but the people IN the mines and who live near the poisoned creeks are an expendable demographic. Beneath his royal contempt. The "untouchables". You might say that's an overreaction or even a knee-jerk reaction but I can...

Obama in bed with the mining industry... (Link)... \t (excerpt) The coal industry has given a combined $38 million to federal candidates since stepping up their climate change campaign three years ago. More than 65 percent went to Republicans, according to an analysis of campaign data compiled by the Center for Responsive Politics. But utility companies that burn coal are now putting almost half their money behind Democrats. Obama topped the list of all recipients this cycle with $248,000. Cl...

As for myself, I guess I'm old enough to have become rather numb to the disappointment. Well, either that or I'm pretty depressed! Here we are again, a non-issue. The one group of folks in America, some 20-30 million strong, without the basic human rights afforded everyone else in this country. The voters no one wants to be seen with, the people whose hopes and dreams are not to be mentioned, the "political poison" people who get thrown under the bus. They want our votes, our money, our support...

If you look hard enough (beneath the MSM blather) you'll find and read the stories from all around the country -- food pantries in crisis, charitable donations down, homeless shelters being closed. Isn't this supposed to be the season of giving and not just buying? Hey America, who cares if you're wished a "Happy Holidays" or a "Merry Christmas" when there are children all across this land who will spend the holiday without heat, a decent meal, or even a home. The community here at DU is one of...

From The Baltimore Sun City's homeless get frozen out Shelter closings force people onto streets By Lynn Anderson | Sun reporter December 6, 2007 Ruth Williams, 66, leads a visitor to the tarp shanty she calls home and says, "Mine is the third castle." Cane in hand, Williams hobbles across a JFX off-ramp to reach her flimsy shelter. Cars zip by as she plops down in a wheelchair. Nearby, a man who also lives under a tarpaulin uses cast-off construction materials and a lighter to start a small...

Amazing, isn't it? While the airwaves are once again bombarded with 24/7 reporting on another missing Peterson (how convenient for them the unmistakable alliteration!) there really are other things happening in the world. You'll have to pardon my cynicism but I just caught the first half hour of The Today Show and the major reports are on Stacey Peterson, a missing student in a European love triangle, and Marie Osmund fainting on Dancing with the Stars -- and that's just in the first half hour! ...

The following story in today's paper comes out of the Cincinnati area, but I know that my own local food bank here in WV put out the same warning of a food shortage crisis. Demand is up and donations are down. Ain't things grand? Millions are losing homes and jobs while the elite feast off the lifeblood of the nation's poor and middle classes. Can't afford a mortgage, a doctor visit, or food on the table? God bless Amurika! (Link) Food pantries face hard times Area's relief agencies cutting ba...

To those who say they have the God-given right to waste as much energy as they can afford, here's the bill for your selfishness. Destruction and poisoning of the lands where mining is conducted. Death and disease for miners and their families. Global warming thanks to the sulphur and mercury-spewing plants necessary to produce your energy needs. Here, Johnny, have some methane for breakfast. Keep feeding the monsters like Murray, keep demanding more of the fossil fuel markets, and just put i...

... as horrific as that was, cases such as this fly under the mainstream media's radar every day of the week somewhere in America. Networks create entire programs such as "To Catch a Predator" to spotlight the prevalence of child sexual predation but somewhere in this country, while I am writing this post, some child in America is being beaten and tortured, if not killed. Who speaks for these children? Who is demanding laws requiring stiffer sentences for child abuse/torture? This is certainly ...

SIX YEARS. And still the real perps of those terrorist attacks haven't been caught. That's quite a success record, eh? But let's not worry our beautiful little minds 'bout that -- look, over there! It's Iraq and Iran! Hell, the media doesn't even bother to remind folks that perhaps one of the greatest threats to their "homeland security" (god, I hate this "homeland" stuff -- shades of Goebbels!) is still walking around the hood with access to bioterrorism agents. Bear with me here, folks. Don't zone out on me before you really give this a look. As most here already know, the Bush family tree includes the Polk family branch -- that's President James K. Polk, another forgettable name in the annals of the American presidency. He doesn't give a rat's ass what the American public thinks. He can send thousands of young men and women to disability or death in Iraq and sleep like a baby. He can destroy his own party by pursuing this insane war because "party" isn't what George is about. This is George's party, and the fat lady hasn't sung yet. He doesn't have to listen to counsel, to the Joint Chiefs, to panels of advisors who know better, because George gets his marching orders from the Lord. He can send 30,000 more ...

Amidst the many celebrations and few disappointments over the historic vote this past Tuesday, there's an important message flying beneath the radar here, one I need to share with all of you. This concerns the congressional race in Ohio's District 2, where the infamous Jean Schmidt was challenged (and is STILL challenged) by democrat Victoria Wulsin. Here's a county-by-county interactive map: (Link) As you can see, voting patterns in Ohio canNOT be defined as a northern-southern matter, it is an east-west divide! I've posted about this dozens of times and yet there are some of DU who still do not comprehend and who are willing to trash all Ohioans from D2, not willing to deal with the fact that this district have been drawn specifically to quash Democratic votes in the Appalachian eastern counties of the district. You've seen the commercials. Young high school kids of working class or poor families, having heart-to-heart talks with their parent(s) about joining the U.S. Army. The young black kid tells his mother it's time for him "to be the man". (Notably only the young black man approaches his mother on the subject, whilst the white boys and girls talk to their fathers.
