1. Obama is not a progressive nor even a liberal democrat and actually never was and is not inclined to ever be. He is funded primarily by the forces of the ultra-rich elite and he in fact is product of that culture. He sees himself as doing what he must to "move the country forward." Cenk apparently (like many of us - myself included once-upon-a-time) thinks that in his heart of hearts Obama is a progressive - he isn't. Yes - he managed to fool us during the election but frankly we wanted to be fooled - didn't we!

2. Obama still has a winning play and it is grand stroke if he pulls it off. It is called "The Jobs Bill." Checkmate of his opponent for 2012 will likely follow. I'm not being optimistic nor do I think Obama is a "genius" but I think he's got this one solved. Remember that the public has a very short attention span. It basically doesn't matter what his approval ratings are right now.

and then it will probably be too late. That is what I've felt. But on the other hand, my personal strategy is to start building alternatives to our current deeply troubled and sick system. I agree that our population has been all but zombified. But when it comes down to basic day to day survival and masses of folks are experiencing this - I do have some respect for the human consciousness to become aware of its survival needs. So mass civil disobedience will likely occur at that point.

We need to:

1. Educate those who will listen.
2. Build alternatives - I'm learning to garden this year. My life doesn't depend on it now but ...
3. Form sub communities of like minding people who recognize the sickness we are fighting.

And even then it would be wrong to say "dismissed as Hogwash". Einstein who could be characterized as the leader of the "God Does Not Play Dice" movement, took the results of Quantum Mechanics seriously. He is even partially responsible for getting D'Broglie (of the very important D'Broglie wavelength) his Ph.D. Einstein was the guy who recognized D'Broglie's foundational QM idea as important. He just felt that there had to be a deeper theory. This idea we now call "Hidden Variables". We also now know for certain that there are no "hidden variables". A very important theorem has been experimentally verified and it excludes "Hidden Variables". By 1927 or so (after Schrodinger and Heisenberg) QM was on very firm ground within the physics community. Bell's theorem though was not tested until the late '60's I believe.

I'm educated as a physicist and I'll be honest. The inescapable conclusion of Bell's theorem, that yes, "God absolutely does play dice with the universe but the game is still rigged in a very bizarre way" still astounds me. The more you know about QM the less you feel you actually know about the universe.

But don't delude yourself. The republican party has a much darker and intelligent side that doesn't want Palin anywhere near the nomination. They are our real enemy's not Sarah (can't get her points out without slandering someone) Palin. She's too stupid to go anywhere near consideration for the president and the grown-up wing of the republican party understands this better than many of us here. They are actually still reeling somewhat that she got as close as she did. I'm sure John McCain is persona non grata in republican inner circles as a result of his massive blunder in tapping her.

As far as I can tell, she is the gift that just keeps on giving. Thanks John, really, we couldn't have planned it better! I guess the only actual danger is that a populist movement develops which the elite wing of the Republican party can't control. Then all hell breaks loose but it might actually be an interesting remix of the American political system. A massive populist right wing movement lead by a blithering idiot. Somehow, I just don't think it will fly. We can hope. If she were to start to threaten the Republican establishment, it might ultimately be the full downfall of this relic of a once great but now hopelessly flawed political party.

The republicans will not throw this at us. Instead they will make the ridiculous claim that we passed "socialized medicine". With all due respect, you are over estimating the intelligence of our opponents. Unfortunately, a percentage of the American people will buy this absurd claim. Nevertheless, we on the progressive side of things need to keep focused on pushing the agenda. We will likely suffer some losses in 2010 but probably still hold a congressional majority. Then we slam it home in 2012. We need to sweep those elections. That is our play folks. It isn't what we want to hear but it is what we have to do.

Honestly, I'm as progressive as anyone here but I think we've only thought about about getting rid of Bush and really didn't look much beyond that. Well, we've accomplished step 1. Now time to start thinking about step 3 or 4... and working hard on step 2 (which is giving Obama as many real democrats and 2 terms). Sure he isn't all we hoped for but honestly, if you thought about it you already knew this.

But it is time to "dance with who brung us." Our chance of having any real progressive leverage begings with a real democratic super majority. Not what we have now, so we need to bide our time and get what we can and get rid of as many blue dogs as we can along the way. Just sayin...
