An interesting byline that delves into the brittle, heavy-handed always present American corporate approach to change & innovation and union relations. Most of which feeding a production line/business model that helped contribute to GM's demise in spite of their once-thought-to-be omnipotent grasp of market share
Citing GM's concentrated, profiteered preference for trucks and SUV's; even at what was a foreseeable time when gas prices *would* spike when the moment presented itself, as well their strange thinking Toyota's Prius was a form of publicity stunt - the piece points as well to union members seeking the job security of a unionized position. Though as well their self-corrosive work habits able to run counter to either longterm employment, union principles or production & quality control that could have contributed to a more stable work environment

NUMMI Plant Closure Ends Toyota-GM Venture
by Richard Gonzales
April 1, 2010
Listen to the Story http://www.npr.org/templates/player/mediaP...
The only remaining auto manufacturing plant on the West Coast is closing Thursday, marking the end of an era in the history of automaking.
New United Motor Manufacturing Inc., also known as NUMMI, was a unique joint venture between Toyota and General Motors in Fremont, Calif., but the partnership ended when GM pulled out last year and Toyota decided to shut down the plant.
NUMMI's end began late last week when the company released about 1,000 workers who built Toyota Tacoma trucks. Some gathered in a local restaurant just an hour or so after they had filed out of the plant for the last time.
Curt Sanders, a 17-year veteran, said he was fine until his daughter texted him.
"As soon as my daughter texted me, you know, 'Everything's gonna be fine. We'll be OK, and this and that,' I just — that's when the river started," he said.
What groups of progressive/liberal democrats and the progressive left could most likely unite to create the foundation of a powerful coalition?
Well, firstly DU could; interesting distinction however "progressive/liberal democrats and the progressive left" so that with the discussion fragmenting down into splinters of shared disrespect instead of cohesion within even these groups; DU, as a sample, could have done better to bridge that span between concepts such as, and it spite or to its charter's benefit: "progressive" "liberal" "democrat" "left" the last of which bringing along its own bag of splintered verbiage in the forms of center right/center/center left/left/far left/extreme left, etc, the last of that-which providing some dog whistle-esque allure to socialists that feel they *are* the democratic left - and while I have no immediate answer, again, DU could have been facilitating that bridge instead of offering to the www a cascading divergence of opinion with little intent to come together come hell or high water. So on that one I wish you luck In that as can be seen in certain responses: some are only here to further divest a cohesive play-book of any plays worth their salt
(2)What issues present stumbling blocks to this type of coalition?
Maybe its a result of the life I have lived, but in my experience any issue writ with the cherry juice from a pie in the sky will become a stumbling block. But of course, no one is under any obligation to believe me
'Well, the last I heard of Arab
He was stuck on a whale
That was married to the deputy
Sheriff of the jail
But the funniest thing was
When I was leavin’ the bay
I saw three ships a-sailin’
They were all heading my way
I asked the captain what his name was
And how come he didn’t drive a truck
He said his name was Columbus
I just said, “Good luck.”'
Seen a *well do'ya!?* list the other day. And while it was less possible to argue with the list as a summary matter; certain items within were able to be recognized as little more feel-good points almost irrespective of their merits in that sometimes the grass don't grow and the wind don't blow and that's the way it is period cause I know I'd just love to see a warm steady sunshine in breezy blue skies demurely falling with just enough morning & afternoon rain water to water my garden...its more to the point that I do not *always* expect it to occur my way
(3)Why isn't there an actual leader or group of leaders who are recognized as having “authority” within the the liberal-progressive-leftist communities today?
Sadly, my sense is that that answer is ref'd somewhere in (1) & (2)
Boehner now, as would a proper weasel says, "'Armageddon' is just a word" well, and of course it is, John...but for that fact that Armageddon is not a word such as: creme-puff, or twinkle-toes, or fake-fucking-tan-with-pout-rage-attached can be or is applicable in every raving RW Nazi-esque waking nightmare (they just happen to be experiencing) is able to sustain and that's why he & all the tired-ass republican doctor-lobbyist' and disgruntled white bigots need THEY FUCKING NEED of all idiot people: Sarah Palin, to re-fire their failed & sputtering little rocket motor - now *I* ask *you* just how fucking sad is that? Cause I say its pathetic though of course as is my way...
Because it isn't just about racism, as large a stigmata as that bleeds
"How curious that a mob fond of likening President Obama to Hitler knows so little about history that it doesn’t recognize its own small-scale mimicry of Kristallnacht."
Botta BING! Its all about brittle, intransigent minds cause you can be as simple as an alluvial moon pool feeding a brook that feeds an ocean and *not* be ignorant of your place & function in this world - paraphrased as a summary matter from Fritz Perls, 'It is better to be the river than a rock' but there's no way for republicans to get there from the pits, trenches & dog runs they've dug for themselves poor dumb fuckers
I'd just like to take this opportunity to point out: that Vichy Care is well positioned to option the services of - Apathy!
Apathy! - while experiencing a upwardly marked trajectory - has been in operation for a short period of time. Though by identifying the needs and desires for a greater union between spent kinetic release and mouse traps that trajectory has become exponential where Apathy! has been applied as a matter of focus
There, you see, the case is already made and we've had Apathy! to thank all along so why not cha'ching that punk too?
In closing, however, I commend Vichy Care's $1 yearly premium business model. Were Apathy! to provide some factor more Apathy! as with a barter, or parley, in that money has no value unless or until you have some - would Apathy! be able to receive 100 years worth of your health care services for $75?
It is a win/win proposition for both Vichy Care and Apathy! Apathy! receives a volume break for health care services however presumed - and Vichy Care is able to deny Apathy! out of hand.
Here's looking forward, and thank you for your time we're Apathy! where here we say by way of a rocking, gently inaudible suggestion instead that is able to be layered, at the discretion of Vichy Care; within Enya-muzak - the 2nd most popular muzak other than Songs of The Humpback Whale,
"We're Apathy! If you gnaw your feet off today, we charge you less for suggesting that you do so tomorrow"
Though before I do shutdown - because I can feel it - I am compelled:
You were such a game little fighter so loving; you rallied & ebbed so gamely my Prince
Safe passage Tim ~
In the replay, Chertoff throws up a fake news piece by a fake albeit easy to glide past GNN, people go to the bathroom, stir some eggs or whatever, and when they come back Chertoff says, "We've just seen a report" We haven't just seen "a report". What we've just seen is a realignment of neocon paranoia hoped to re-infuse itself into the war planning of America specific to "Russian servers" and, presumably, the Russians standing behind them that's Russia mind you: RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA RUSSIA (sudan china venezuela anywhere but israel) so get it straight but do not for an instant question German servers able to dispense BlasterWorms for year and years, just don't do it
The real time on-flat-screen spreading of negative effects behind this bogus-ass republican panel all yip yip yipping paranoias to each other and the world beyond; gives that person newly arrived from their kitchen with a fresh beer, the impression that it is actually occurring not you not me but someone and you know it already has
Chertoff's directing all process into the present tense as though it is all really happening moment by moment; is some of the most foul media manipulation in the lexicon of media manipulation - its dangerous. I have no info on the extent to which CNN has been rewarded here. But as a simple, manipulative media abomination I can see why their ego showed up to play
Maybe the net effect isn't Russian severs at all. Maybe its that we should go over to Gate' and Jobs' house, beat the shit out of them and toss them in prison for high treason for offering products so able to destroy American society with the tap of an "Install Now" button by a tinsy plastic stylus
I do believe we are being cyber-pinched all the time. And by toys & apps we only think are fun till they crash grandma's power grid after downloading some Apple Movie Trailer. I also believe these strange, already discredited bush-admin no-bid crony DH un-thinkers should be further away from the problem than they would desire to be
BREAKING: "Scrambling to restore the nation's power supply" - Blitzer
Of just what the malady is that compels people to express forms of 'collective memory loss' regarding torture. Or people expressing vast dismay when it is reported back, contemporaneously, as though they never heard the concern to begin with. I recall the primaries quite well, and the great taffy pull of derision that befell anyone outside the group think. This thread: http://www.democraticunderground.com/discu... and its illustration of what a 'blind side' looks like floating past a puter screen is very telling if all too true; was instead instantaneously thrown into the face of HRC, her old man/NAFTA: anyone anywhere else just not where it seemed, so...
Would that it were so, but: 'collective memory loss' does not pertain only to torture - an ill, sick-minded, always highly charged hot button - it occurs over other things too cooler things maybe as if: nuke plants, clean coal, Yucca Mountain, Cheney's energy policy - lots of stuff that should have been tracked with a sober eye and some measure less than 'twinkle twinkle little star'. Cause now, in spite of the strides toward idealogical purity: no ones hands are clean anymore having supported planks so little understood; made flesh today as ~ Out Damn Spot!
As for finding any center here at DU? You may as well be Ponce de León searching for The Fountain of Youth, cause it just ain't there-there either. DU is not into centrism and DU will trend toward confirming as much, so that's out. But DU is able to gather some ease in that regard because all the centrists are leaving
Whatever facets were there - when we thought there was a there-there - which ever ones people care for today one way or the other: they were right there all along hiding in plain sight withered, and forsaken http://www.huffingtonpost.com/david-robert...
And Rancho Seco, not that far from where I am, is a park today for many of them http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/... But then I turn on the TV, and see so many anticipating electrical-manna to just keep falling out the receptacles on our walls like they've done all along and I wonder - How can it go on without a realignment of thinking with respect to the enhancement of energy and its transmission? Fossil fuels aren't so yesterday although they are so much as they are so this guy,
Figuratively speaking of course
And then I think: wull, I saw that movie and nothing worked out right *WE* need to be part of the crew that births the next level into existence - where we live, dad gum it! But you're right that takes money lots of money everything takes money more so these days, what to do what to do
In the brochure; nuclear power looks cool and it is kinda cool with smiling families falling snow sipping hot coa-coa in a warm day room with a 62" flat screen watching Nickelodeon, studious children under soft lit laptops off to do better things one day, right? That's the cool stuff: security, permanence, stability, warmth...it's the stuff standing behind the nuclear power brochure people should be rightly concerned about
I like sparkley, glow in the dark stuff found in corn fields just like anybody else. Cept that's when I send in my crow cause he's all about that stuff, and he says: the people that already operate nuclear facilities are pretty smart as it is - they have to be cause they're sitting in a control room eating their lunch from home on top of a process willing, in the absence of stringent protocol & redundancy, to blow the roof off the dump and fuse a hole into the earth
But the next level is coming, and its good to be thinking about it
There...and from the two (2) DUers that gave me mine
transits a lens...it is all upside down on top of it and not merely surreal though I do hear you talking just fine, and so: republicans, as sensually repressed creatures coursing for new/various ways in which to express it - their inadequacy, self hate and separation anxiety - that when Limbaugh, their premier face-of-the-GOP misogynist first touted this woman, Sarah Palin, he did so by pointing out that she had 'well defined ankles' 'babal-icious appeal', and so forth. And while I'm not so detached from 'the packaging' being appealing, color balanced, cutesier & fluffy otherwise easy on that worn, personal chafe somewhere its the tinsy-tiny little print of warnings on the label about deathly/brain dead effects on Rhesus monkeys that persuade me to remain disinclined to purchase the product regardless even on a 3 for .10Ct coupon
These Beck', and Limbaugh', and Palin', and Brown' are just the cardboard cutouts. The game at that level is power & money. It is embarrassing to hear Limbaugh absolutely stutter and stumble through sentence after sentence for 2 & 3 days *until* something makes a blip or starts to stick. Day after day, especially these days they have nothing to say and they know it. They know it so well cause the answers are writ on the easy-to-ref palms of their hands. They are the new ones - The Weeny Babies
But when the MIC went shopping for world-citizenry during WWII they were enamored with the shaved-head-blitzkrieg-discipline the Wehrmacht were able to bring when so many Americans cared so little for such disciplines preferring to stay home wear Bobby Socks, drink malted milk and become an economic actuaries
They were not *not* aware that the Wehrmacht traveled on the repressed, strikingly violent fantasies of one Adolf Hitler, and that there is a connection between that madman, shaved heads, unasked and so unanswered questions, and the purchase of that world-citizenry they've sought as the unknowing profits and fodder for their MIC, but that was that...
Until they reached into the Coliseum of Mussolini's Rome and found their contemporaneous cruise missile: Cicciolina
Cicciolina’s Sexual Politics
A Porn Star Uses Sex as Her Claim to Power
Should women use their sexuality for political gain? Or is it better to avoid this route to power?
One woman who famously used her sexuality as a political tool was Hungarian-born Ilona Staller, best known as the Italian adult film star, Cicciolina. In 1987, 20,000 people in the district of Rome hand-wrote her name on their ballots, preferring her over forty-seven other Radical Party nominees. Cicciolina's political campaign included striptease, live snakes as props, and her signature flashing of breasts.
Many saw Cicciolina's exhibitionism, promiscuous persona and victory at the polls as a national embarrassment. Although she is unofficially credited with establishing one of Europe's first green parties, she had little political experience when she got elected to the Italian parliament. And lest anyone forget that sexuality was her claim to power, she acted in an adult movie while serving her term.
But many others recognized that she was using sexuality not only to get elected, but also to poke fun at the hypocrisy she saw in the Italian government. Italian writer Umberto Eco is reported to have said of Cicciolina's election, "Immorality for immorality; we've seen worse." Eco was alluding to the famously and chronically corrupt Italian government overrun by thieves, convicted criminals and mafia-sympathizers.
As bad as it truly is: republicans have been doing much worse things than even forcing wages down for decades now, representation without taxation and low or no wages are part of their grid. But they've been forcing the integrity of public service down into the gutter for much longer than that
Sarah Palin is just the next one down in that trough, and the baggers are trying to be American versions of the very best Germans they can be
And no! I will not post that pic of Brown...that I leave to his wife after she's done laughing like a horse at the sound of her husband auctioning off their daughters for squirts, giggles and political profit at a podium in public
I intend to start a thread later or early evening that will be ignored I am quite sure ignorance being bliss: but after tracking the RW meme machine yesterday I've noticed a theme emerging/regarding their new call for the treatments of radicalized persons - which you *are* free to include Turner Diary Douche and/or "the radicalized left" and others as it turns out
Initially, though running now for a couple weeks somewhat innocuously, the faux-concerns on their part remain brittle & shrill but that's what they were to begin with although when they get their demographic on-board that is when that carrion starts to flap its wings
It is very subtle at this point but like a snow ball it is picking up flake after flake so I'll give you a hint: it involves being considered a social (read here "socialized", that shoe fits too) anti-civilization deviant for certain & very specific forms of personal behavior (hm, wonder where I've heard that one before) that is being spun out, like a mandala, to include the assertion that says that radicalized/socialized/deviant behavior *can* be extrapolated from binge-living, sexual promiscuity with multiple partners (read here a disrespect for 'traditional family values'), purchasing patterns, being socially casted out (which is what mean little boys & girls do the very, very best read there: Monica Crowley), longterm inability to find & hold a job especially an important one like talking into a microphone while sitting on your ass - soon to follow: thoughts, dreams, goals, aspirations - like reading a resume - as a resultant of known, already referenced behavioral science, from a known point and therefore their "civilized" response to such persons alluded to above to include they with life-ending-pains brought about by their IRL inability to become the protectorates of Noble CGI Savages such as the Navii of Pandora: all of it is to be cobbled in advance and in response to a war not just 'with' civilization but *on* civilization by romanticized, go-teed, pot smoking, raspberry beret wearing revolutionaries on urban Vespa's with manifesto', fizzy bombs and tattoo guns in their saddle bags
If you don't mind, I'll send you a PM when its up - oh yeah, there's a couple ways to look at it. Though as a practical matter if "the radical left" cares to be included into a basket-case of vile, bloody, fizzling Turner Diary bombs and red flags then they will be
There are some sites that DU Admin will delete as well, and there are specific reasons why they do. I think it important to evaluate threat with eyes-wide-open, to, hopefully, better understand the *matrix* of bogeymen and morphing threats before us all
'the respondent mind' drives the pace of that acceleration and in certain cases it's deceleration. But if the mind does not respond, others with...maybe even corrosive agendas will simply interpret that as apathy. It is into that breach any as such Byzantine intrigues perceived as "takeover" are sown and begin to grow. So that like defensive driving: vigilance remains key. Though 'vigilance with respect to what?' I hear you asking
With defensive driving as a preliminary baseline we know what that is. There's no more call to expend whole spans of time to reckon it, pattern it, turn it in 3-D space, fit that piece into a puzzle (that I hope we've been gluing down as we go) cause it's *that guy*, the guy that races right round from behind us in grid-lock up the shoulder spitting gravel on the Hwy at 80mph just to get 3 cars ahead - that guy, that guy is assuredly accelerating the process. Hm, odd however...
To be paraphrasing a known republican word-chopper like Rumsfeld but crazy drivers being out there is 'a known known'. And that's how they do it. They exude 'knowing' whether they *know it* or not. Certainty, certitude. They extrude shit onto the podium in public; then accuse others of taking that crap until people actually believe it
With respect to vigilant freedoms - however - too many Americans were never concerned till they seen someone else pack them up and take a step toward the door
I used to perform longitudinal data recovery. A process where policy/legislative/social science researchers ask for verbatim, nuanced, detailed follow-up and so I'd call back into the homes of folks and ask if they'd be interested in providing any detailed verbatim expansion to a specific sample question either skipped, left open-ended, smudged whatever - just to make it right
The question researchers were keyed on in the sample dealt with 'personal privacy', and this was maybe 5 years ago
Spoke with an elderly WWII veteran American boy - his voice and playful country gruff-ness reminded me of my Dad - and spoke with a naturalized Russian emigre now living in the states: Sergei - 5 Masters Degrees - Poli Sci, Econ, Philosophy, Russian Lit all thickly accented heavy stuff
The ole American boy agreed and we talked for a time about this & that but soon I had to work it back around to the verbatim, "Why do they need to know that?" "Those people get paid too much money!" And that is when I maintain collegiality but 'go flat' for the sake of the sample - it was my going flat that accelerated his response, "You just tell those people that I have a right to not have my mailbox rifled by these kids on their bikes all day anytime they want to. You tell them that. You tell them that's what 'personal privacy' means to me." "Yes, Sir, thank you for your participation. Policy researchers will..." "Yeah, yeah, yeah." "And thank you for time as well, Sir. Goodbye." And that was it 'personal privacy' - American Style
Sergei had more than an opinion, Sergei had a pop-treatise on the matter ~
"'personal privacy' is entitlement provided by state or society to citizen..." And off we went. I felt like I was walking through The Hermitage. Before standing with Sergei in the chill of Stalingrad's falling snow. Maybe I'm too high strung and write, read, and pattern too fast which was good cause Sergei had me filling the back of the screen and upside down into the margins
It's sometimes more than asking two people to describe the same rose garden. As these exchanges left me with the clear impression that freedoms are viewed completely differently by people that have presumed their existence and inalienable viability all along; and people that have had little or no access to them. Quite beyond apples & oranges. It can be red roses...and blood red roses
So if they think that convicted, murderous sociopaths are the drivers for their "takeover" then everyone that has supported them is an accomplice to that perversion. And republicans know it. That's why, and especially after asking Obama to come on over and spank them for being so stupid; they have fallen so blissfully silent for a time as they are stunned by this murderous, ill-fruit they have sown. Their smack talking ill-fruit has made republicans less certain
Maybe they're re-tooling after their coo-coo boy went down so hard cause you know they were acting like he was a canonized saint about to get probation, community service and an ankle monitor...but that didn't happen - or looking for Luntz to attach an even *happier smiley face* applique onto that stale, tired-ass old "takeover" of theirs but I'll tell you this,
Americans will not have to endure any more "takeover" than they haven't already signed off on by way of their acquiescence to 'the respondent mind' searching for ways to make freedoms more expeditious, concise and personalized, oh yeah. It's accelerating and not all for the good nor in ways yet labeled
