the freshwater, Greenland ice mean a significant shift southward for the thermohaline current? But then I live on the west coast, so no problemo. Ms Bigmack

Well....there's the new grandchild that we adore.....and now a tangible connection to this dubious future..... Scary. We'd do almost ANYTHING to protect her future. Alas, why do we feel SO alone..... Ms Bigmack

IS a VERY SERIOUS problem, but as George Monbiot recently pointed out in an article, that as best I recall, can be found on Alternet, the rich are FAR more costly to the environment, in terms of energy consumption and resource depletion, than are entire villages of the poorest. Ms Bigmack

My animals lived like kings. I worked in a rich suburb and brought home supermarket leavings every day... produce, milk, cheese, the whole bit.

I was well aware of the sentient nature of my animals... I birthed most of them. You really know a pig when you wiped it down with straw to stimulate it's breathing after it came out of it's momma....... at 3AM.

They only had one really bad moment in their whole lives, and with my shooting, they probably only had 1/4 of a moment. They saw a little pile of lettuce, bent down to eat, and the lights went out.

Sounds hard, but I'd rather be in touch with my animals... and my food.

I certainly agree with the OP that slaughterhouses are awful. Something as smart as a pig... even one raised in a meat factory.. knows everything that's going on. Slaughterhouses and feed lots are a national disgrace.

I'm no vegan, but I eat local stuff. I won't eat "caged" eggs or chicken, feedlot beef, farmed salmon, veal of any kind, and any other of the "Frankenmeats". Hot dogs? You've got to be shitting me!

If I can't afford real food, I'll eat beans and rice.

Obviously it's a touch on the depressing side, but this stuff needs to be shouted from the roof-tops...... Tho even then no one in this willfully ignorant land would hear/listen. Damn! Ms Bigmack

like this I can't help but think that the world would be a better place if a brave, selfless man like Monti were still in it.

What good things might he have accomplished? That selflessness is in short supply these days. Doctor, maybe... teacher.... writer.... cleric...

Instead he died in some nameless, forgetable shithole .....for nothing. Because this country sent him.

The country is unworthy of the bravery of that young man. Perhaps the good that can come out of his death is to help convince more of us to get out of there before more Jared Montis lose their lives.
