I'm not even an Obama supporter, but I had to reply to this one. A poster from In. on our local NM fish wrap's comment section Obama -- What's not reported in the news? What about Obama’s associations with 1960s radicals Bernardine Dohrn and William Ayers ((Link))? What about his support for gun control (member of board for Joyce Foundation that supports gun control and a 1996 questionnaire that he completed supporting gun control ((Link)) Did the writings of Obama’s fathers in “Problems Faci...

Blessing or Bane? Near China's northern borders lived a man well versed in the practices of Taoism. His horse, for no reason at all, got into the territory of the northern tribes. Everyone commiserated with him. "Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a blessing," said his father. After a few months, his animal came back, leading a fine horse from the north. Everyone congratulated him. "Perhaps this will soon turn out to be a cause of misfortune," said his father. Since he was well-off a...

In the Spring of 2004, I was desperate. Bush was a looming menace on my mind and I knew he had to go! I was a Kerry girl all the way. I had written the Senator in 2002 and begged him to run, and my wish was coming true, he was running :woohoo: I was working with ACT and the budding MoveOn.org to GOTV in Phoenix and was hearing the right wing talking points against all our candidates. One evening, I googled “John Kerry” for some ammo to knock down the arguments I was hearing. One of links was a ...

if you can belief that we believe and take some actions we suggest, the results of those actions will lead you to faith. here's a parable I like to explain it (stolen from Joe & Charlie's Big Book study) It was explained to me the difference between belief and faith. Belief is something some one tells you causing you to take an action, faith is what comes as a result of the action you took. for example: you move to a new town and your car needs work. you ask your neighbor if they know a good ...

second, :yourock: third, I'm so glad you're my pal :pals: now, to address your question; people are mean when they are scared and there is lots to fear in today's world. I think the better (or different) question is when did we become such cowards? People need someone else to blame for their perceived failures. part of the perception of failure in our society it's all about "toys" a bigger car, faster PC, smaller phone, or whatever the 'product de jour' is. We have lost the ability to find ...

I'm looking at this recipe for tonight and have almost everything but "rice noodles" and rice vinegar. I'm wondering if Ramen noodles will do the same thing? and the rice vinegar is another one I'd like to sub, I have white vinegar, balsamic vinegar and red wine vinegar. Suggestions? or do I need to go to the Asian market while I'm out and about today? A railroad crew was out one summer day repairing the rails and switches. The work was hard, hot and dusty. At lunchtime a big sedan pulls up and the crew leader gets in and it drives away. A new guy on the crew said "Who is that?" and old timer told him "That's Mr. Big, he and Sonny have lunch every couple months together." "Mr. Big??? the President of the Railroad??? Has lunch with SONNY??" says the newbie. "Yup," says the oldtimer, "they started working for the RailRoad at the same time. B...

there was such a range of people, attitudes and civility at DU that I never realized. I learned about all the neat little forums that I still visit regularly today like Environment/Energy and the Writing Group. I learned a lot about civil rights, human rights and discrimination listening to my fellow mods speak about what it was like being "black/gay/transgender/southern/female/hispanic/physically challenged." It really opened my eyes how insidious the discrimination is in our society and h...

the emotional learning curve, there may be some merit to that, however may I postulate that it is less a learning curve and more a matter of overall temperament. some folks get old and mellow (like me) some folks are just more passionate and the longer they fight the deeper the frustration and pain grows. I am grateful there are still some women who jump up and down and scream but I recognize that a broad brush is a messy business. It splatters both your friends and your enemies indiscriminate...

which takes time but I agree, the language can get pretty harsh around here and the language against women is so insidious. these threads, flames and all, are a start to hopefully get people thinking about what they are saying. we can only hope to educate and to get more folks to be willing to speak up when they see words like that. folks of all sexes and persuasions to realize that to let them stand with out comment is wrong and hurtful. but as I said in another post here the comments need ...

Medical Research in medical research for heart disease, the vast majority of the $$ went to studying heart disease in MEN. until about 10 years ago almost no research was done on heart disease in women, even though it is the #1 reason for female death. they only figured out a few years ago that women's heart attack symptoms are usually totally different than a man's symptoms. Women don't recognize the symptoms through a lack of education or if they do make it to the hospital they were misdiagn...
