As some of you know, I've recently been working on finishing up my first "full-length" documentary. This project was a two person project(my brother was a huge help with planning our filming trips and took still photography for the film) and self funded. It was a hard and at times incredibly frustrating experience, but sitting down with each of these veterans and listening to their stories inspired me to keep going. I wanted to give these three Iraq War veterans a platform to tell their own stor...

Beginning tomorrow "FALLOUT: Coming Home from the War in Iraq" will be available for online viewing at the film's website: (Link) FALLOUT has also been accepted to the NewFilmmakers Summer Festival in New York City. I will have more details within the next few weeks. Thank you everyone for the encouragement and support. I learned a lot through making FALLOUT, my first full-length film. It's been a hard and long process, but it has been worth every moment and every penny. Tomorrow! :)

This is a rough edit of the first six minutes of what will be a 50min+ documentary. I'm currently working on finishing up and hope to put it online next month. I have a rough edit complete and am currently in the process of doing some sound editing and smoothing out some transitions. It's a work in progress! A little bit of information about this documentary and its progress: I finished interviewing the veterans about a year ago, but a majority of the funding came from my savings, and my pocket...

I remember beginning to think about which schools I was going to apply to about two year ago. At the time I told myself and everyone that I would apply to no more than 7, and preferably about 5. As the time to apply crept closer and closer the neurotic worrying and stress that many students suffer began to sink in and my list of schools grew. I ended up applying to 10 schools. Today I heard from another school, completing the admission process for me. I'm absolutely thrilled and honored with the...

In the summer of 2007 I began filming for my first full-length documentary. I traveled to different parts of the country to interview veterans of the war in Iraq. In 2008 the production of the documentary came to a halt due to lack of funding. A majority of the funding had been coming out of my pocket(my car fund had become a documentary fund), but eventually my money dried up. A couple of weeks ago I sat down and began to review the footage I have. I was hoping to have a bigger project with mo...

During his 1976 Presidential campaign Ronald Reagan told a story about a "welfare queen" from Chicago's South Side. Since then it has become a catchphrase used to describe poor mothers, particularly poor black mothers. It is a phrase that is used a disturbing amount even to describe those legitimately receiving welfare. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture more than one in 10 Americans, or about 31 million people, were using food stamp program to get by in October. The most recent nu...

I'm 18. Much of my life has been during the disaster that was the Bush Administration. I've been politically "active" since I was 10 - during the 2000 election. I campaigned for Gore locally and read about the political process during that election. When I was 14 the 2004 election took place, and I was absolutely certain that Bush would be voted out. It didn't happen, and it was a kick to the stomach. This time around I did as much as I could do for the Obama campaign. I'm a young person in Ala...

This is video that I edited for the Alabama Democratic Party. It was shown to the Alabama Delegation during the 2008 Democratic National Convention. I made a short intro, and then the remaining part of the video is the "I Have a Dream" speech in full. I've seen this speech more times than I can count, but it still gives me chill bumps each time I watch it. I thought that with today being Martin Luther King, Jr. Day it would be appropriate to share this video. YouTube: (Link)

Last Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act (H.R. 11) and the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 12) by a vote of 247-171 and 256-163 respectively. A good start for the 111th Congress and women's rights supporters. After the House vote on Jan. 9, the two bills were then bundled together into one bill, H.R. 11, and sent to the Senate. There could be a vote on the bundled bill or on the two Senate bills as early as this week. As a feminist and young woman, thi...

(Image) Four years ago George W. Bush was asked if he thought he had made any mistakes as President. He was unable to name one. This morning Bush held his final press conference and was again asked if he believed he had made any mistakes as President. You can read the full transcript , but I believe this portion sums up his answer: "There have been disappointments. Abu Ghraib obviously was a huge disappointment during the presidency. Not having weapons of mass destruction was a significant dis...

I should have all my applications submitted by the end of this week, but I'm still undecided about two. I'm applying to or have already applied to: UCLA Berkeley NYU Harvard UT Austin Alabama I'm considering Ithaca College and Boston University.. I've filled out apps for both, but am not sure whether I'm going to send them in yet. Application fees are crazy expensive! I'm looking to major in film. I'm freaking out dudes and dudettes! :scared:

I love Thanksgiving. My family is filled with passionate people, and I am no exception to that. We've been known to heavily debate politics, religion, and philosophy(my Mom and I argued about free will just the other night, lol). When you gather a group of passionate people together under the same roof they are likely to clash at some point. Imagine Thanksgiving with our family! My PaPa once said that we all argue "just to hear our heads rattle." Maybe he's right. However, those debates always m...

obama's story really hit home with me last night especially. my younger cousin is about the same age i was during the 2000 election and has been keeping up with this election. i love him to death and he calls me 'his' "ava lou". we're close with our family, so i see him often. he's also biracial and is being raised by his single white mother. sound familiar? he gets picked on at school because of his being biracial.. not just by white kids but black kids too. the past year or two he has started...

or more hopeful for the future of this great nation. We've had a rough past 8 years, and I've grown up during that time. I just turned 18 last week, and was excited to get my voter ID card in the mail. This campaign has been inspiring from the start. Friends of mine who were never interested in politics before started reading the news and keeping up with the issues. I've seen houses in my small Alabama town with Obama signs, and I've seen pick-up trucks with rebel flags that have Obama bumper st...

I'm sure that a thread about the Bachmann incident has already been posted, but I wanted to rant a bit about it. To my fellow young people(and all voters), this is an example of why it is so important that we vote on election day. PLEASE PLEASE make sure you cast your ballot. I'll be proudly casting my first vote for Barack Obama. If you're on a college campus, according to Rep. Michele Bachmann, a surrogate for the McCain camp, you are "anti-american." When asked by Hardball host Chris Matth...

(Image) Watch the Video: | A few short clips from the footage I shot at the 2008 Democratic National Convention. Here's a short summary of each day: Day 1 - I sat on an airplane parked on the runway for an hour, so my flight was late getting in. I managed to make it into the convention during Senator Kennedy's speech and was able to catch most of the major speeches on night one. Day 2 - I got onto the floor for the day, and went to the "Sweet Home AlObama" state party convention headquarte...

After last week's convention I came home inspired and ready to hit the ground for Obama. I'm a student, and don't make a lot of money with my job since most of my hours are spent with school work, but I knew I had to contribute a small bit to Obama's campaign. It wasn't a lot, it was what I could afford... but I'm so happy to have made my first political contribution to campaign that represents change, and more importantly - hope. As a young person who will be voting for the first time come Nov...
