(reprinted from a guest post from Carl Siciliano, Executive Director, Ali Forney Center) The holiday season frightens me. It is the time of year our homeless kids are most likely to attempt suicide. Kids who have been cast out of their homes suffer badly during a season that celebrates and idealizes family togetherness. Yesterday I met with a group of kids at our drop-in center in Chelsea. They were all out in the cold at night, waiting for beds to open up in our shelters. One boy, who is 16 y...

a few years ago. Basically the filmmaker drove into each town in Maryland(?) and then edited how similar all of them looked with a Walmart on this side, the required McDonalds in front of it, K-mart down on the left.... It was really an eye opening film about what big box is doing to communities, I mentioned it to a group and we'd like to play it for our town council before they make some decisions regarding rezoning that would allow Cracker Barrel and Olive Garden into an area that hasn't bee...

of it and start over? Here we are with trillions hanging over our heads talking about bailing out Greece? Spain? BOA? Seems like it'd just be easier to kill off the derivatives, declare the old custom of Jubilee and let everyone start over. It sure would be interesting to see if we learned anything at least

(Link)/ Remember when you believed that if we just elected enough Democrats to Congress and took the White House, we could take this country back? We could stop giving tax breaks to people who didn't need them so that we would have a shot at creating jobs, providing for those in need, and still break even. We could end government-inspired discrimination against people because of the way they look, who they love, or where they were born. And we could actualize "the moment when the rise of the oc...

Maybe this would have been the way to present a Jobs Plan to the American Public - put it out there in a Special Session called by POTUS - MSM couldn't help cover it because it's been so rarely done - and every D on a talk show could use that simple talking point, the President knows American people need jobs, that's why he's called Congress back into session and here's the plan. Make it one that extracts 5 lbs of flesh for everyone that votes NO. If if the House votes it down, they lose the H...

(Link) Audio devices typically are banned from 11th Circuit Court of Appeals hearings in Atlanta, but a ruling on Tuesday allows arguments in the upcoming hearings to decide the legality of the Obama administration’s health care overhaul to be recorded and sold to the public at $26 a pop, reports The Associated Press. A three-judge panel of the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a ruling Tuesday suspending a ban on audio devices for the June 8 arguments. The general public, however, cannot r...

(Link) "In December I came out in support of the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. I also removed the admins I had delegated my moderating duties to for my Facebook page. Having done that, I had to pick up where they left off. I was largely taken aback by the fact that the page I created had become such a hateful place. My comments are rhetoric paled in comparison to what that place had turned into. I began to understand why the gay community was out there claiming opposition to same-sex civil ...

Seems like every third post lately is about who should primary him, the poll numbers of this or that potential Democratic candidate vs this or that Repub candidate. But I've yet to see any speculation about "what if he decided not to run?" Probably not a realistic situation given human's attraction to power and a reluctance to give up any gained. But seriously, what if he just said "the hell with it, I've had enough" ?

(Link) A grotesque 68-year-old car salesman, Republican “young gun” (?!) and failed Senate/House candidate from Ohio has been charged with “three felony charges of gross sexual imposition, and single counts of kidnapping, abduction, solicitation, and menacing by stalking.” Tea Party-endorsed Tom Ganley allegedly attacked a woman from Cleveland and stuck his hands down her pants after she refused his sexual advances, at a car dealership, where she was having her car serviced. During his campaign...

The colonists based the American Revolution on their cry against taxation without representation. Now, a new survey shows that Americans are very clear about how they want their tax dollars spent. By a notable margin, education and health care were the top two spending priorities of Americans. And Americans are consistent in that: Those two categories have finished in the top two in each of the ten surveys since 1990, according to the General Social Survey (GSS), conducted by NORC at the Univer...

Warren Buffett, the widely followed chairman of Berkshire Hathaway, has sold the company’s entire stake in Bank of America Corp. while adding to his holdings in Wells Fargo & Co.. Berkshire’s ownership of BofA (NYSE:BAC) wasn’t rewarding. The legendary investment firm built a large stake in the bank in early 2007, buying 7.8 million shares in the first quarter, according to The Wall Street Journal. The bank’s shares traded at roughly $45 to $51 during that time. With the bank sector and econom...

The California Supreme Court will decide Wednesday whether to plunge back into the legal battle over same-sex marriage. The state high court, meeting in closed session, will review a request by the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals to determine whether Proposition 8’s sponsors have legal authority to defend the ballot measure. Depending on the court’s ruling, the 9th Circuit could either dismiss the Proposition 8 appeal on procedural grounds — limiting the case’s effect to California — or rule...

(Link)/ Word is just coming down that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has vetoed the largest single mountaintop removal permit in West Virginia history. The move is part of an Obama administration crackdown aimed at reducing the effects of mountaintop removal coal-mining on the environment and on coalfield communities in Appalachian — impacts that scientists are increasingly finding to be pervasive and irreversible. The final EPA decision document is available here. (Link) EPA offic...

Still classy asswipe! Just like your mama (Link) Former President’s George W. Bush and Bill Clinton made their first joint visit to Haiti this week, touring and helping out in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital city devastated by the January earthquake. It’s an admirable visit, but something else happened while down in Haiti – it appears Bush wiped his hand on Clinton’s shirt. Let’s go to the videotape! Breitbart.TV originally asked the question, and with the video evidence the comments se...

fuck out. With you and your copy cats gone, maybe we could actually get back to some intelligent discourse about policy. And don't even think about reneging on your promise - You said you were leaving the country if health care passed - I hope people will call your show every day and ask when you are leaving. (Image)

In most sales training - that is one of the standards - people will go to greater lengths and effort to protect what they've got than they will to get something new. One thing I'm noticing with the angry right more and more (especially the tea-baggers) - most of them have government checks coming in - Social Security, Unemployment, VA benefits or retirement, Medicare, their kids are getting student loans for school. I also see the racial component in many (not all) of their protests and wordin...

BBC - Former priest Bill Carney was named as one of the worst cases in Dublin's Catholic diocese in the Murphy report into clerical abuse there. However, for the last 10 years he has been free to live quietly in Britain. Newsnight's Olenka Frenkiel has investigated his case and tracked him down in the Canary Islands. Not only did they know, but they helped him get a sweetheart deal on criminal charges that only involved probation, then put him right back into a job with access to children. Ev...

of hearing about how it's only able to be used for budgetary items - surely Federal road inspectors, unemployment benefits and Medicare payments should qualify, right? If so, they need to do it now to stop the pain - and show the public that reconciliation can do good things in the face of this obstruction. If not, they need to be out there explaining why not - the media's already done a bang up job of making it sound like the Dems can pass just about anything through this process if they want...

ahead of the mortgage. I guess more are deciding it's not worth it to keep paying when they're so far underwater - pay off the credit cards while still living in the house - then start over somewhere else. As underwater homeowners around the country despair over whether to keep paying their mortgages or just walk away, investors in the largest residential real estate deal in U.S. history have just walked away from 11,232 properties in one fell swoop. On Monday a group led by Tishman Speyer Properties gave up the 56-building, 11,232-unit Peter Cooper Village and Stuyvesant Town apartment complex in Manhattan, turning the properties over to its creditors after defaulting on some $4.4 billion in deb...

Sure, there have been accomplishments by this president in his first year, as with any president. But the disappointments are more deeply felt, particularly by gay people like me. Rather than moving boldly forward with his party's big majority in Congress, Obama set out from the beginning, on almost every issue, to bring Republicans aboard, seemingly at all costs. It was a fool's errand since the Republican Party has long defined itself as the party of "no way." From civil liberties and economi...

Interesting article here, wonder how it will play out - Why Did They Close WaMu? EDITOR'S NOTE: In September, on the first anniversary of Washington Mutual’s closure, the Puget Sound Business Journal reported that as executives fought to sell the bank during its final days, regulators undercut those efforts by signaling to bidders that the bank would soon be seized and sold at a much lower price. Now, further investigation reveals that, contrary to regulators’ assertions at the time of the se...
