Hughes for America

With today's news, we again find ourselves asking: Exactly how much safer are we? Whatever happened to the "we're fighting them there so we don't have to fight them here" philosophy? It's probably in the same undisclosed location today as the "treating terrorism as a law enforcement action is the wrong thing to do" philosophy, both of which are held by the Republican Party.

And with word coming that the administration was well aware of the investigation that led to these arrests, we again find ourselves asking: Why is the president still on vacation? He already owns the presidential record. By the time he leaves office, President Bush will have spent more than a year of his tenure in Crawford. Does this amaze anyone else? I'd like to know what would motivate this man to leave Texas in August. It wasn't September 11. It wasn't Hurricane Katrina. In fact, when making a special speech about Katrina, the president couldn't even be troubled to spend more than one fifth of the address discussing the storm. No, he said "On another matter ..." and proceeded to discuss the Iraqi constitution.

Perhaps if Terri Schiavo had hijacked a jetliner, Bush could have been bothered to stop clearing brush and return to doing his job. In case you haven't been paying attention, shit isn't exactly going so well around the world. Yet we've got a president - arguably the most important person in the world - who is workin' for the weekend. Actually, it's debatable whether or not he's actually working. Do they still consider driving America off of a cliff work? If so, heck of a job, Bushie. That war on terror you keep talking about? Great job with that.
