My father explained that the world requires men only to be responsible and accountable for their thoughts, their feelings and their actions. Women, he suggested, are always permitted to blame others for what they think and feel and do. My mother, he explained, would maintain her belief that I had "made her hit me first" and would insist that I needed to change so that "she wouldn't have to yell at me or hit me ever again." I remember saying that I did not think that was fair. My father explaine...

Many years ago, my then SO and I went to the rodeo. Before you give me grief, I hate the rodeo and so did then SO. I think we went to see if it was as bad as we remembered it from our childhood. It was. During the rodeo, a "bucking bronc rider" was thrown, got his foot caught in a stirrup, was dragged around, wound up under the horse's hooves, and was beat up pretty badly but survived to regale his grandchildren. The next day it was "reported" in the local fish-wrap/"news"paper. According to t...

He wanted to be on the World Stage. Early in the reports from Norway, there was a thread in LBN in which someone noted he didn't want to be a 'martyr' as he didn't die rather than be peaceably arrested. That statement got me to thinking. He didn't want to die; he wanted the attention of the international media; he wanted to be on the international stage. But, for what purpose? To promote his 'value system'; and later I was to discover, to promote his 'compendium'; which the media is calling a...

First, I want to thank whomever you are who donated a star to my name. I appreciate it very much. If you care to reveal yourself and get kudos (or disdain; I'm an 'acquired taste'. ) from the board, please do. If you prefer to remain anonymous, know my thanks are not lessened because I do not know who you are. You did a nice thing for me. Now, because I'm old school and I'm still always aware of , I have to include something with this OP to make it 'worth' standing as an OP rather than just a '...

President Obama succeeded where bush failed. This is the message to pound out. The Democrats succeeded where the repubs failed. I've read here, over the years, the frustration that the 'right' gets their message out and that the 'left' has such difficulty. Reading this board and news websites over the past few days since President Obama and the Democrats succeeded where bush/cheney and the repubs failed, has been very interesting. It's been a lot of arm-chair quarterbacking and second guessing...

Haiti's ex-dictator Duvalier charged with corruption; freed by prosecutors PORT-AU-PRINCE - Former Haitian dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier Tuesday left a courthouse here after being questioned by prosecutors, but had to remain at their disposal, his lawyer told AFP. "He is free, but has to remain at the disposition of justices," the lawyer said, as Duvalier left the building, still not in handcuffs and accompanied by his companion Veronique Roy. Asked by AFP how he was feeling as he ...

(Reuters) - Haitian authorities will question former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier to determine whether he should be prosecuted for stealing from the treasury during his rule, a senior government official said on Tuesday. "He will be questioned and he will remain at the disposal of the judicial system," the official, who asked not to be named, told Reuters. (Reporting by Joseph Guyler Delva; Editing by Pascal Fletcher) That's all so far from Reuters. Miami Herald says: PORT-AU-P...

Sorry, guys. I'm mostly keeping my updates in my other thread but the spin in this article hurt my eyes, knocked me off my pins, or something. That it's from NPR makes it more heinous to me. This is also in my other thread but I decided this needed its own place as well. Ewwww. <snip> Amidst chanting for Jean-Claude Duvalier, Sanon says young people want to be able to go back to school. Robinson Marquis, who was standing nearby, said Baby Doc was Haiti's last great president. "Since...

MEXICO CITY — Haiti’s former dictator, Jean-Claude Duvalier, huddled with his advisers at a Port-au-Prince hotel on Monday, a day after his stunning return to the country he ruled for almost 15 years, as the nation waited for his next move. Supporters said Mr. Duvalier, who is known as Baby Doc, was expected to speak to reporters sometime during the day. The sudden appearance of Mr. Duvalier, 59, who ruled Haiti with brutality and corruption before he was forced to flee the country in 1986, th...

'Baby Doc' Duvalier back in Haiti after long exile – 46 mins ago PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti – Haitian national television says former dictator Jean-Claude "Baby Doc" Duvalier has returned to the country. The stunning development caught the nation off-guard in a moment of political crisis. Duvalier landed on an Air France plane around 5:50 p.m. local time Sunday. He wore a dark suit and blue tie. He was greeted at the airport with hugs from supporters. He was taken into an immigration office before...

Thank you! I enjoyed, okay, I'm not sure enjoyed is the right word; the video was very powerful as are the words and her voice. Now, I'm going to go put my post to which you replied in my journal, so I can be sure to have this whenever I need to be reminded. I would feel awful if all your hard work went to waste and this young woman is powerful. Thank you so much!

Apparently, there is a middle-class flight from Venezuela counting in the 10s of thousands or some such. Interestingly enough, the CIA Factbook (hardly a friend of Chavez, I'm pretty sure) says: Net migration rate: 0 migrant(s)/1,000 population (2010 est.) country comparison to the world: 101 Net migration is defined as Net migration rate This entry includes the figure for the difference between the number of persons entering and leaving a country during the year per 1,000 persons (based...

back as far as about 2008 with one article with a date of 1998 that seems to have been taken off the 'net. I've found its use with regards to President Obama and against the leftists since about 2008. I really don't want to link to those sites here. Some of them are pretty ugly. Apparently, the "far" right (as versus, what, the moderate right?) have been using the "blood libel" phrase for a few years now beginning in the more fringe groups of the anti-choice movement. This may be the first ...

I had a book review to do for a class in Women's History in the US. The book I chose was about Irish immigrant women who had come to the US. One of the chapters was about the social workers in New York and how they viewed "those" women. Social workers of that time were middle-class white women of the "Protestant persuasion". Please remember, at that time in history, mid-19th century-ish, the Irish were not considered "white." The report from the social worker stated that she had visited the...

He saw a UFO, he's an older man married to a younger woman, he looks like a Keebler elf, and he can't get elected president, and in spite of the co-sponsors signing on to many of his bills, he doesn't work well with others. That's why I must spend as much time as I can posting at DU telling everyone how ineffective he is. He does not speak for the party and I'm here to tell you that I'll do my best to discredit this completely ineffective politician who has seen a UFO, married a younger woman,...

If you don't like the phrase "Health Insurance Reform," take it up with the White House. It’s clear that the American people want health insurance reform. They aren’t interested in Democratic ideas or Republican ideas. They’re interested in the best ideas to reduce costs, guarantee choices and ensure the highest quality care. They’re interested in ideas that will put them back in control of their own health care. Throughout the debate on health insurance reform, Republican concepts and pr...

This crap is not new. It is not from what we now call the r/w. If anything, it comes from those who have always, currently do, and will always, support the status quo, benefit from the status quo, and as such, will continue to promote the status quo and help to perpetuate "the existing institutions". That is not party specific; never has been regardless of what you'd like to believe. Nor is it new for members of the press to do much the same. The Purging of the Party. :sp::sp::sp::sp::sp:Hea...

We can escalate a war or we can leave a country in chaos (because, yeah, escalation isn't chaos?!)? That's it? No other options? What if we spent as much money to build hospitals, schools, and infrastructure? We could even keep some of the troops there as bodyguards for the builders. We could send doctors and teachers and engineers and construction workers; maybe some from the US are looking for jobs and wouldn't mind going? I mean, I know it's not as sexy for the war porn crowd who gets a...

useful idiot to show people the differences between feminismS and women-in-power. So many seem to equate one with the other. FeminismS come in many different categories regardless of what rushbo, his ilk, and their (un)suspecting audience may propagate to and through the media and to (un)suspecting consumers and other useful idiots. The common thread I've found throughout FeminismS is challenge of the status quo. The status quo being the webs of systems of authoritarian and hierarchical co...

Of course that may mean we have to traverse the Rockies and the Appalachian ranges at places other than their highest peaks. The Colorado River for the Rockies and the Hudson for the Appalachian. Two aspects of the biased media are discussed in the following article. There are many reasons I hope many of you will take a look at the "Money Trust." There is a belief; that bush caused all this, that what we are living through today began in 2000 or during reagan or because of nixon, or that it is in some other manner, recent in history and can be attributed to but one person or one small group of people specific to this time, or that it is the result of one or another political party. That belief, regardless of the form, is simplistic at best, dangerous at ...
