KUDOS TO CONGRESS!!

After an anxious few months (plus several decades!!) last night the US Congress took the heroic & historical stand to reform our broken healthcare system!!

I want to thank my Rep., Jan Schakowsky, who always does the right thing & always has our best interests at heart. I also want to thank Congressman Joseph Cao for his courage to vote YES, in spite of the huge backlash he will get from his own party. His vote will long be remembered by the rest of us as a Profile in Courage! I believe him when he says he voted his conscience. When Sen. Lieberman says that, it's clear to everyone that what he's really saying is "I'm voting for the corporate interests that fund me." It rings hollow & falls on deaf ears! I pray that Sen. Lieberman truly will find his conscience before any vote goes to the Senate and, at the very least, he allows the debate to go forward.

As someone who was denied coverage for a pre-existing condition and then spent the next five years without any insurance - up until the time my condition became debilitating & I was forced to go on Disability, and was finally able to get the medical care I needed (single-payer, government-run Medicare which, if anyone's interested, works perfectly!)... I know, firsthand, how scary it is to be uninsured & in need of healthcare. I am truly grateful.

I write this for my daughter (who also has a pre-existing condition - a congenital heart defect) who graduated college last year (YAY!!) & immediately lost her health insurance (BOO!!), as well as the 37-million other uninsured or underinsured Americans.

As this issue now heads to the Senate, I hope & pray that each & every Senator (& that includes you, Joe Lieberman!) really do search their consciences and do the right thing for the people of America. NOW is the time to finally bring our country into the 21st Century, be on the right side of history and, yes, honor the memory of Sen. Kennedy, as well.

Sincerely,
Susan Danzig
