Fri May 23rd 2008, 10:51 PM ...if that's possible.
...and that's her ghoulish "that's why I need to keep running" justification. I'm I the only one who's bothered even MORE by that? Duke ![]() Posted by Duke Newcombe in General Discussion: Presidential (Through Nov 2009)
Fri May 23rd 2008, 10:05 PM He said the truth, he said it passionately, and said it convincingly. I can add nothing more.
The fact he looked like a mushroom cloud would burst forth from the top of his head with righteous outrage only awed me more. Spot. Flippin'. On. Duke ![]() Posted by Duke Newcombe in General Discussion: Presidential (Through Nov 2009)
Sun Apr 27th 2008, 11:02 PM Full Disclosure: I support Barack Obama for the Democratic Party nomination.
It is obvious that this "unity" behind the man is secured with paperclips and duct tape. He's still not "conservative-y" enough for many in the party, and no matter how many speeches he gives selling himself out ot CPAC, he is undependable to them--or at least that is the perception. Let us run with it. Let's send that message out to any Repub or repub-leaning person and outlet we can. The main points of attack? 1. "McCain's 11th-hour conversion to Conservatism is out of convenience, not conviction" 2. "Don't trust what he says--trust what he does" 3. "McCain-Feingold/McCain-Kennedy" Yes, we actually believe he was in some of his few and far between lucid moments when he goes with "us", but it's false. Your usual suspects are already complaining about this "imperfection" of his (Rush, Hannity, etc). This is something that will easily fracture the party and cause Conservatives to stay home. As long as we can keep them and their media mouthpieces fixated on some long gone Ronnie Regan worship instead of the here and now, the disaffection will grow, Republicans will stay home, or even--gasp--take another look at our reasonable nominee (Obama, no doubt!) I don't mind telling you that as a Democrat, I have absolutely NO problem exploiting and exacerbating that divide. Opinions? Mon Mar 17th 2008, 10:10 PM It seems to me, that "Big Dog" keeps injecting himself into the campaign--no matter how HRCs handler try to keep him out. He is being sold to us as 1/2 of the "Two for One" deal that HRC is offering us.
I believe it is therefore more than fair to ask the question, when the 3 a.m. call comes in, will HRC nudge Bill, or make the decision herself. How deeply will she involve Bill in policy, daily workings of the White House--and why is this necessary for someone who is "ready on Day One"? I would comment on how Bill would handle the topics and issues of the day. Since we're getting a "two-fer", it's logical to anticipate that how Bill would handle it, is how Hillary would handle it, unless disabused of that notion by HRC. This does two things--it cuts however much of Bill's coat-tails that HRC is trying to ride, and finally, FINALLY gets her to detail how she will deal with the issues that matter to Americans most--without hoping we just "reminisce about the good old days", and forget the "inside baseball/inside joke/cool kids club", triangulating, sometimes too cozy relationships that Clintonian politics fosters. Sun Feb 24th 2008, 09:37 PM From the NYT: http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/24/world/eu...
NIZHNY NOVGOROD, Russia — Shortly before parliamentary elections in December, foremen fanned out across the sprawling GAZ vehicle factory here, pulling aside assembly-line workers and giving them an order: vote for President Vladimir V. Putin’s party or else. They were instructed to phone in after they left their polling places. Names would be tallied, defiance punished. The city’s children, too, were pressed into service. At schools, teachers gave them pamphlets promoting “Putin’s Plan” and told them to lobby their parents. Some were threatened with bad grades if they failed to attend “Children’s Referendums” at polling places, a ploy to ensure that their parents would show up and vote for the ruling party. Around the same time, volunteers for an opposition party here, the Union of Right Forces, received hundreds of calls at all hours, warning them to stop working for their candidates. Otherwise, you will be hurt, the callers said, along with the rest of your family. Over the past eight years, in the name of reviving Russia after the tumult of the 1990s, Mr. Putin has waged an unforgiving campaign to clamp down on democracy and extend control over the government and large swaths of the economy. He has suppressed the independent news media, nationalized important industries, smothered the political opposition and readily deployed the security services to carry out the Kremlin’s wishes. No matter how funky this present administration gets, it is helpful to remember it can ALWAYS be worse. That said, is there anything that the next administration can do to slow or stop the rollback of democracy in Russia? Should we do anything at all? Tue Feb 19th 2008, 09:52 PM With this ridiculous "plagarism" charge.
I'm off to turn myself into the Plagarism Police by not giving attribution to Charles Dickens or Shakespeare when I say "at the end of the day..." and to God when saying "the right hand doesn't know what the left hand is doing"! ![]() Duke ...by his Che-lite populism. I AM dismayed at how easily some here will accept someone granting themselves extralegal powers, wishing to grant themselves "rule by decree", and see even PROPOSING the "enabling law" as in keeping with the tenants of Democracy.
When someone like Luis Miquilena, a former Chavez confidant and cabinet member, said the president "is doing whatever he wants and doesn't abide by any rule", I'd tend to listen. This isn't some norteamericano spouting off, this is a former member of the man's cabinet. http://english.aljazeera.net/NR/exeres/A16... . (Yes, an article from Al Jazeera, mouthpiece of the right). Romanticism of the whole socialist world view, the daring revolutionary meme is no virtue when discussing Mr. Chavez. But I guess we'll have to wait until he achieves "real" totalitarianism until you actually take notice. Duke

...there's a shortage of will for agribusiness to stick a crowbar in their wallets to pay American citizens the prevailing wage for such work instead of exploiting brown skinned people for cheap labor, and looking the other way re: immigration status (if not being outright complicit in bringing folks here illegally).

...when you're consolidating power, why worry about a close vote.
http://www.aei.org/publications/pubID.2449... At the end of the day, all it proves is that even with an electoral structure filled with cronies, when you put your boot on people's necks long and hard enough, they're going to eventually get up and do something about it. Whether the opposition can stay upright is a different matter. It hasn't stopped Putin much... Duke

I get it. RCTV's suppression isn't "real" to you. Nationalization of projects and assets isn't "real" to you. To the Venezuelans denied access their message and property, I think you'll find a different take.
If Chavistas were intellectually honest, they'd say flat out, "yes when it's our guy, we don't mind totalitarianism". I guess that's too much to ask. And I sincerely doubt you want to be proved wrong--that would be symptomatic of willingness to be wrong, which the tone of your post indicates is false. Duke
