Wed Nov 15th 2006, 12:39 PM What music did you all queue up before, during, or after this election?
The following were on my Tuesday morning playlist last week: Heroes - David Bowie Schadenfreude - Avenue Q. Scary Monsters - David Bowie The Partisan - Leonard Cohen Padstow May Song - Maddy Prior version (some lyrics: "unite and unite and let us all unite, for summer is a-coming today"; "oh where is King George? Oh where is he now?") The Prickly Bush - Steeleye Span version Hallelujah - (Jeff Buckley's version of Leonard Cohen's song) As you can see, I was somewhat optimistic but not counting on anything yet. Wednesday night, my fiance put on Pete Seeger's rendition of "How Can I Keep From Singing," which was just about perfect. There are plenty of tyrants trembling right now. (If this is too frivolous for General Discussion, my apologies. I'm still feeling my way around DU.) Posted by Erechtheides in General Discussion (01/01/06 through 01/22/2007)
Mon Nov 06th 2006, 10:28 AM response to a post about a tragic result of marriage inequality
Any objection to full marriage rights can only be based on the assumption that we just don't love the way straights do, that gay relationships are only about sex.
Once you give us credit for the normal gamut of human emotions, you can't read something like this and not see how wrong the status quo is.

Mon Nov 06th 2006, 10:24 AM response to a post about lifelong republicans voting out the GOP this year
Bless them. I suspect (and fervently hope) that there are many, many more out there who feel the same way. The only thing stopping people now, I think, is fear of admitting that they were wrong.
The same thing that's keeping us mired in Iraq. Maybe a little room for "flip-flopping" is crucial to any kind of informed decision-making. This must be why the Bushies hate science so much.

response to a post about gender identity in young children
My own feeling is that at three years old, one has too imprecise and imperfect an idea of what "being a boy" or "being a girl" entails to know something like this for sure. Many kids go through a phase with this and it doesn't last. My fiance, when she was three, wanted to be a purple monster when she grew up. Kids love to play "what if."
If this something that persists as he grows up, and that he recognizes as important to his identity, remember too that many men who are not transgendered are transvestites, and that many of these are heterosexual. The best thing you can do for him then is to listen to him, and not to assume anything. Wearing girls' clothes doesn't necessarily mean he's gay or even transgendered. Good luck to you all, whatever happens; he's a lucky kid to have a family willing to seek out knowledge and to love him no matter what.

Wed Nov 01st 2006, 04:30 PM I walked with a group of my friends in the annual Village Parade in NYC last night. Among the costumes I saw:
-an Emergency Contraception pill -several packs of Birth Control pills -a Border Fence -many, many Diebold voting machines -Bush in diapers -Bush on a leash held by a millionaire in a top hat -Bush as Curious George -Darth Cheney -Dick Cheney with a blood-spattered hunting outfit and rifle -Dick Cheney in a dominatrix outfit There was also a very impressive giant ant, but I don't think it was a political statement. I love my city. (edit: This is my first post on DU; I hope it's in the right forum.) Posted by Erechtheides in General Discussion (01/01/06 through 01/22/2007)
Mon Oct 30th 2006, 09:07 AM response to a post about education levels and union allegiances among progressives
I'm one of those college-educated (working on it, anyway) elitist assholes of whom you speak. Worse, I'm going to go into the business of making MORE of them. Teachers have a very strong union, by the way.
I understand your frustration, but I need to tell you that you are working with a set of assumptions every bit as bigoted, harmful, and inaccurate as those that some snobby types may hold about you. Not everyone who's been to college holds the same set of ideas on any one of the topics you list above. Speaking for myself, "against the death penalty" is the only thing from that list that applies completely. I think people should be good to animals, but I also think PETA are a bunch of self-serving, delusional freaks who do a lot more harm than good to their cause. The idea of a left-wing "cultural elite" is maybe the most dangerous enduring myth of the neo-con revolution. The sneering, self-entitled, anti-union, over-privileged plutocrats are, and always have been, on the right wing. It is a crying shame that they've sold this idea that ultra-rich, well-connected conservatives are populists to so much of the U.S. by cynically exploiting people's religious beliefs, all the while funneling more and more money into their own cronies' pockets. There may be some limousine liberals about, but there are a whole lot more corporate-jet conservatives. The left needs every hand, every skill, every voice, we can get right now. We need people who speak as many languages and live in as many worlds as possible. Please don't be put off by a vocal, ignorant few who do nothing but prove over and over again that a college degree is no cure for stupid. We're all just trying to get by without going broke or getting sick or being blown up. We all want the same things. Peace.

Sat Oct 28th 2006, 09:46 PM response to a post asking what "the homosexual agenda" means to each of us
but my homosexual agenda basically involves translating and tutoring in Greek and Latin, writing papers, taking exams, and occasionally having time to cook and eat a meal with my fiance, who also works and goes to school full time.
I've long said that we are all our own best ambassadors. Being open without being strident and living peaceably and productively in the world is the only way we can make fears and prejudices dissolve. Knowledge conquers hate. It's a slow process, but the only one that can work.
