Mayor's Graduation Speech Protested

Students are circulating a petition demanding that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill rescind its invitation to have Mayor Michael Bloomberg deliver the commencement address next year because of his handling of Occupy Wall Street.

Mr. Bloomberg, the petition says, "represents the oppressive nature of the intersection of capital wealth and government" that Occupy Wall Street rejected.

"He's come to represent the anti-Occupy," said Kari Dahlgren, a senior and supporter of the petition, during an interview with News 14 Carolina, a local TV station. "For a movement that has no enemies, he's taken the step to become the enemy by shutting down the park."

The petition had nearly 300 signatures by Thursday afternoon. "We don't want Mayor Bloomberg to be the person that sees us off into the world," Laurel Ashton, a senior, told News 14.
