I believe in many things. I believe in a higher power but prefer not to discuss that and surely not to impose it on anyone. I believe there is life on other planets but we have yet to prove it. I believe the power of man will eventually bring about a Utopian life on this planet, but I also believe I will never live to see it.
There are also political beliefs. Among them, I can proudly say I believe:
In a strong national defense, well armed and well trained, with the aim to be the preeminent military force for the ages.
In national single payer health care, available to everyone equally, from cradle to grave
In a national pension system, with credit from all work, be it corporate executive or stay-at-home mother or anything in between
In social equality, without regard to gender, race, or life station
In fiscal responsibility, in a legally mandated balanced national budget with exceptions requiring the approval of two branches of government
In a period of national service for every citizen prior to the time that citizen reaches the age of 40 years.
In the maintenance and protection of international relationships, ideally by diplomacy, but if need be, by force.
In an effective national intelligence service.
In the rule of law, applied equally, without favor
In taxation that taxes windfall over work, that encourages good citizenship, and that equitably shares the burden, and that demonstrates that citizenship is not free.
In free and unfettered capitalism, to a degree.
In the control of businesses as may be needed to protect the public weal over the corporate good.
The acknowledgment of personhood only in human persons
In a free media, regulated to encourage freedom of the press and to protect the media from the influence of power and money.
I believe political labels are helpful as shorthand, but recognize that no two thoughtful people hold the very same views.
I believe in America. I believe our current "National Dark Ages" will pass and a new era of enlightenment will come and come soon.
