Confuse-a-Cat
I am working with Occupy Greensboro (NC) which is just getting started and organized. We even managed to make the last night</a> (I'm the guy in the red shirt). As usual, the press starts out comparing us to the Tea Party, and commenting that we are mad at someone but don't know who or why.
So, I need your help to counter this meme.
I am hoping to steal a great idea from the protesters of the 60s and stage some teach ins. The idea is to help people understand HOW they are being screwed...
Is not direct confrontation, but oblique query. Don't attack their viewpoint or facts, simply ask questions about them.
For example:
Teabagger: It really pisses me off that my taxes are so high, I want my taxes cut.
Me: That certainly is vexing problem. What is your tax rate?
TB: (Blank stare) Er, uh...
(Most people don't know what their tax bracket is:
Me: Well, let's assume you doing well, making a million a year, putting you in the top tax bracket. You are working VERY hard, 60 hours a ...

Place: Deck of the RMS Titanic, in the middle of the North Atlantic
Capt. Boehner (The icy waters of lapping at his feet): Damn it man, when are you and your people going to fix this problem?
First Officer Obama: Well, sir, your people built the ship, told us it couldn't sink, fought regulations about carrying more life boats as "burdensome government regulation" then you sailed us through iceberg-infested waters at night, at top speed, in order to facilitate ...
The real question for a person living in, or near, such a forest, is how likely is a fire, and how severe will the fire be when it occurs.
The question of frequency and severity are a factor of the conditions in and around the forest itself. Extremely hot Summer days, the density of the undergrowth, drought conditions and high winds are all factors which will dictate the frequency and severity of the fires that must occur at some point.
What will trigger the fire is a question that is almost i...
I hold him in high esteem.
People are refusing to see the dire consequences of our energy policy, but it is damn sure coming home to roost at blinding speed.
The sad part is that a massive effort toward new power sources would address MANY of our economic problems. Trouble is, we need new approaches to encourage the market place to switch priorities.
Taxes are one way to handle things, but there ARE "market-based" solutions. If it were up to me, I would:
1) Offer a special tax break to the F...

Sheriffs in North Carolina want access to state computer records identifying anyone with prescriptions for powerful painkillers and other controlled substances.
The state sheriff's association pushed the idea Tuesday, saying the move would help them make drug arrests and curb a growing problem of prescription drug abuse. But patient advocates say opening up people's medicine cabinets to law enforcement would deal a devastating blow to privacy rights.

Note to moderators: While this may ostensibly be considered an "election reform" issue, it needs to be in GD because it concerns all DUers who have supported or support Bev and her organization as "the good fight" against the RW attempts to corrupt the voting process in this country, whether by faulty voting machines or bogus claims of fraud. Here Bev comes down against the Keith and his view that the GOP has been perverting the entire justice system to keep minorities from voting.

Bev is responding to questions from someone named Joe Hall about Bev's Proctoscope, er... I mean "VotoScope".
First, let's end the secret society business. Then we'll cooperate with you, when your group is showing the public face and the accountability that is expected of the election reform community.
Joe, you, John Gideon, and selected others are a member of the private "Quixote Group," which has been operating for nearly three years now...
When I was working on s.223 in NC, I had QUITE a few people telling me that the bill HAD to get rid of voting machines, nothing else would be acceptable. I was told that unless I fought for hand counts only, I was betraying the movement.
Had I followed their advice, I would have failed in NC.
Reality check folks:
OpScan.is.here.to.stay!
We might be able to get rid of touchscreen, but OpScan is NOT going to disappear from mainstream American elections. I have talked to dozens of election of...

Thu Jun 29th 2006, 10:08 AM Mods: This is a GD topic, not Election Reform, since Ms. Harris obtained MUCH money from DUers in general to support her organization and these people have a right to see some accounting of it. If the topic is moved to the Election forum, fewer DUers will see it who, I feel, have a right to see it.
Also, we would like to invite DUers with CPA/accounting backgrounds to analyze the filing.
Again, this is an accounting of how money many people on DU donated to Bev has been accounted for.

using a real world event, the "mysterious" -16,000 Gore votes in Volusia Co. in 2000.
I will pare this down to the bare points for simplicity. Let's start with the facts:
- Reporters watching the totals during election night noticed Gore's count going BACKWARDS.
- When investigated it was discovered that a PCMCIA card was uploaded which had NEGATIVE votes.
- The data was discarded, and the correct data re-uploaded.
- It was reported an unaccounted for PCMCIA card had been used in the system...

Is this reported problem different from the one reported in 2004 by RABA Technologies?

"3. Load a PCMCIA card with an update file. The PCMCIA card can be used to update
the software on the AccuVote-TS terminal. This can be done by placing a PCMCIA
card with an update file into the terminal and rebooting the terminal. The update file
allows an attacker to overwrite any file on the system. Furthermore, by using this
technique an attacker can install his own version of the ballot...
I failed to parse the question and answer correctly.
Bev was NOT the first person to find the files:
Some kids who are "really interested in computers" were playing around last year, spidering through the links on various websites, when they discovered that Diebold had an unsecured FTP site (the same one Behler had used). One of the boys noted the fact on his website. Some other material on that site--not the stuff about Diebold--attracted a lot of hits, and that automatically led Google, the ...

I called David Allen. "What am I looking at?"
Now here's where we get another example of Bev revising history, and I really thank you for allowing me this opportunity to point it out.

Sun May 07th 2006, 02:11 PM From the Bev's site:
Diebold has also been participating in orchestrated smear campaigns against Black Box Voting and its founder, Bev Harris, using fake Internet "screen names," identity theft (posing as board members of Black Box Voting to post defamation), organizing fake news Web sites smearing election integrity advocates in general and Black Box Voting/Bev Harris specifically. Some Diebold employees tag-team with the Diebold smear squad to point elections officials toward the cyberlibel. ...
is much, much worse. S223 which is the law in North Carolina is not as strong as I would have liked it, but it was the best bill we could put together (and it sent Diebold screaming into the night). I do not believe you are going to get a better bill than 550. It establishes a minimum enforcement floor, not a ceiling, and most importantly requires code disclosure and a voter verified paper record. It also states unequivocally that paper trumps electronic counts. If the two counts differ, paper i...

Wed Mar 22nd 2006, 03:09 PM I just caught this news story about Stephen Heller, the fellow facing felony charges for revealing that Diebold broke the law in California.
(Link)
This graf leaps right off the screen:
Bev Harris, founder of Black Box Voting, told investigators that Heller met her in a Ventura County park in early 2004 and gave her the documents. She turned them over to the secretary of state and the Oakland Tribune.
Why in God's name did she reveal the source of the documents? This is a women who styles he...
has been registered in my name.
Some clown, (J'Accuse, Bev Harris!) has registered or had a stooge register the domain scamdy.com. "Scamdy" is the childish nickname freepers have created for Andy in their vile postings at FR and CU.
I can only assume the intent of this person was to create a site mokcing or attacking Andy, then when the WhoIs registry was checked, it would look like I was being disloyal and we would have another 600 post thread arguing the evidence for and against me.
The end...

While authoring Black Box Voting, the groundbreaking book about the secret voting industry, Harris interviewed hundreds of witnesses, including election officials and even voting machine programmers who work directly for the firms that build these machines. It was Harris who discovered 40,000 secret voting system files on the Internet (from Diebold Election Systems), a massive security breach. These files have now been studied by co...

In my desire to prove that I hadn't stolen anything from Bev I provided a lot of documentation to "Sonja".
I was initailly suspicious and asked for confirmation from Bev that she was acting for Bev.
I got this email from Lowell Finley, Bev's attorney:
Dear Mr. Allen,
This is to confirm that Sonja Johnson of Johnson Group, PLC is acting on behalf of Bev Harris in conducting the audit of book sales.

So, if you PM me with your email address I will email you a URL to the site so you can read the document for yourself.
I will not post it on DU and do not want anyone else to post it on DU. If you want the URL, PM me.

I have noticed recently that we have some folk trying to rehabilitate Bev Harris's reputation by explaining away her erratic and toxic behavior as some kind of "misunderstanding".
Access to DU is critical to Bev since it was an important source of cash, helpful researchers and credibility in the past and even more important now that she has been disowned by folks like Randi Rhodes, Keith Olbermann and Mike Malloy.
For those who do not know or have forgotten (or have no access to the archives) ...
