Thoughts of the Great Midwestern Mind
The other night I was watching Maria Hinojosa's very well done report on the assasination of Dr. Tiller...well worth the watch. At the 6 minute mark of the video, there's a shot of a website showing links to Roeder's connection to "Operation Rescue" and guess which site is shown? Go look for yourself... http://www.pbs.org/video/video/1150923052/... Sorry I can't put up a screen shot...maybe someone else can. Kudos to Colbertwatcher and all here at DU (and in GD in specific) that have made this place a great resource for the latest news and then the fact checking...
She's playing "identity politics" here...for the person not the issues. Shame she's now turned into a one-issue, low information voter.
We don't elect Presidents by national numbers...if that were the case we'd be finishing up Al Gore's second term (and too bad that didn't happen)...the game is won on the state level...and, more specific, with a solid "ground game". There's no magic here...organization wins elections and thanks to both Dr. Dean's 50-state strategy and the extended primary season, Senator Obama has a commanding lead in the number of campaign offices and foot soldiers who are determined not to let this one get away and prevent this election from being stolen. In essence, they're gonna do what the repugnicans did for many years to win...while all Gramps can do is "bomb from the air". What matters are the polls in key states such as Ohio Virginia Colorado (and note this is before the DNC) and Michigan Note the trend lines on all these surveys...all were taken before Senator Obama's speech on Thursday and I suspect there will be bumps in all these states...and maybe that will ease your angst a bit. Also, pay little attention to the corporate media spinning...they love the beauty pagent numbers and then go digging for stats that fit their memes and storyiines. As the saying goes...keep the eyes on the prize. Personally, I hope people are a little freaked by the spin and beauty numbers...get them off their asses and onto the streets to make sure this election doesn't get away. Cheers...
Here's Some "Family Values" For Ya
Hi Koko!! Glad to see you... For a woman who claims to be "pro-life", what mother puts a career ahead of her child and family? Especially one who has a serious disability. She didn't even take maternity leave from what I could see...had it been me, and this had been my child, I would have resigned and dedicated myself fulltime to the child's care and comfort. Something is awfully screwed up here. Last night I saw a pic of Commander Huff'nPuff, VicoCindy along with Palin and her oily hubby holding the baby...no other kids in the pic...I think it was for people magazine. It make me Shameful that she's trying to ride the coat tails of a true fighter for woman's right and equality, Hillary, and stands against everything Hillary worked over 30 years for. Shamefull...as is the corporate media for spewing her "compelling story" as if this "fresh face" is a true alternative. I sure hope woman are seeing this for what it is and this selection will have some massive blowback. I also hope Hillary comes out and blasts this poser whose trying to steal her legacy. On Edit: Here's The People Pic... A little exploitation anyone???
Let's play a game...the corporate media just loves to play games...so let's help them.
Anytime you hear them claim this was a bold pick, just replace that with the true word here...desparate. This is not "bold" judgement, but a desparate one...and a very cynical one. Just because, as Debbie Wasserman-Shultz framed it today..."she has the same body parts", this is not an attempt to "shatter the glass ceiling" but to replace it with plexiglass.
Remember, this is the party that views women as second-class in every way possible. Palin wasn't picked because of who she is, but what she is...or what she isn't (a nigblack). She doesn't advance the march for equal pay and rights for women, it just puts a "pretty face" to the long-held view of a woman being second-fiddle. Even her life story isn't one of accomplishment but of being subserviant...to her oily hubby (barefoot and preggers) and then to the special interests who pull the real strings here...the large corporations and the fundies. She looks like a fresh face since all the old ones are tainted by corruption...she just hasn't had a chance to catch up with the boys.
This pick should be considered an insult to women...especially the many who put their faith in Hillary...a true lifelong champion for rights for ALL Americans. This is just trying to grab at the low-hanging fruit (PUMAs...if they really exist) and to get the corporate media tongues back on their talking points and away from the substansive issues that Senator Obama and the entire Democratic party put front and center in front of 38 million viewers last night. When you can't beat them on substance, dazzle 'em with bullshit. And if you can dress that bullshit up in a pretty face, so much the better.
This is Karl Rove 101...how the GOOP was able to fill the church busses and steal the '00 and '04 elections. That's sure not the case this time. Lookee here: Camp Gramps says they're going to use an "air campaign"...non-stop TV ads to make up for their lack of organization in key states. While we've seen some initial success, the shelf-life is limited and as we get closer to election day, that air campaign will get diluted as others also take to the air. The Obama campaign has gotten where it is due to a tremendous grassroots organization...and thanks to Dr. Dean's 50-state investment, there are now Democrats in places that hadn't seen a Democratic organization in decades (and totally neglected by McAuliffe). Thanks to the protracted primary season, Democratic voter roles are at record levels. If we work to get these people to the polls in November, the GOOP is in real trouble...
Take your pick...Hanoi Hilton or Paris Hilton. Not sure this is a good...I never won a DUzy, so I'll leave it up to the smarter and sharper here to come to your assistance.
There are a lot of unanswered questions about: And how about his son, Andrew, and his recent job at a failed Nevada bank...shades of Silverado???? You don't even need to dig up the Keating 5...there's plenty of questions about Gramps' "friends" and their "fondess" for him. Cheers...
Is this the third time Bayh's name has come up? He's like the Harold Stassen of short-lists. Cheers...
KagroX does another great analysis of the constipation pit known as the Senate and how 10 obstructionist Repugnicans are creating a stonewall between this regime and reality and the American people: http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2007/7/1... Most notable are all the bills passed out by the House that are sitting in limbo and being held hostage by McConnell, Liebermann and Rove in an attempt to make the House look ineffective and prevent boooshie from having to veto bills that could further hurt his corrupt party's chances next year:
The College Cost Reduction Act - H.R. 2669
Homeland Security Appropriations - H.R. 2638 State-Foreign Operations Appropriations - H.R. 2764 Interior-Environment Appropriations - H.R. 2643 The Energy Price Gouging Act – H.R. 1252 The No Oil Producing and Exporting Cartels (NOPEC) Act - H.R. 2264 FY 2008 Defense Authorization Bill - H.R. 1585 FY 2008 Homeland Security Authorization - H.R. 1684 Hate Crimes Prevention Act – H.R. 1592 D.C. Voting Rights Act – H.R. 1905 Rail and Mass Transit Security Act - H.R. 1401 Presidential Records Act Amendments of 2007 - H.R. 1255 Whistleblower Protection Enhancement Act of 2007 - H.R. 985 Reauthorizing Clean Water State Revolving Loan Fund - H.R. 720 Employee Free Choice Act - H.R. 800 Requiring Medicare to Negotiate Lower Prescription Drug Prices - H.R. 4 booshie promises to veto 60% of all the work the Senate is doing...and it's high time to call this asshat's bluff. But it requires pressure on obstructionist Repugnicans, standing up strong with Democrats like Feingold and, yes, Reid, in breaking down the stonewall through raising the noise level on our front. Repugnicans can't get away with talking one thing when cameras are on and voting the other when Rove cracks the whip. Democrats are far from perfect and there will come a time to challenge Democrats who aren't "Progressive" enough. Let's demand up or down Senate votes...thus forcing Repugnicans to make the hard choice of the Constitution and supporting legislation a majority of the voters in next year favors...or ride the boooosh trainwreck into political oblivion. Cheers...
Chippy is a chimp in some zoo, for Christ's sake, but is he smarter than Fred Barnes? Steve Brill's Content Magazine did a scientific analysis of predictions made on talk shows. Since Chippy is just slightly smarter than the president, they had Chippy point to blocks or balls (whatever) with "yes" and "no" written on then. Using this method, Chippy scored an impressive .517, which means he was right more than he was wrong. How did Freddie Barnes do?
That says it all... This is hillarious listening to what my father used to call "mental masturbation"
I was just in Arizona and was sad to pop on 1010 in Phoenix to hear a holy roller and then found out about what happened. Sadly, radio is a business that forces sales like these to happen. This station was a "stand-alone"...a small AM operation in a market dominated by large, corporate-owned operations that suck up almost all the advertising revenues in town and the few locals have to fight for the remaining crumbs. It's even more difficult these days when the economic hard times and growth of IPODs and Internet and Satellite radio have eroded local revenues even further. Religious broadcasters have the cash and look for stations in distress like this and pick them up for pennies on the dollar.
The question the site doesn't mention is what the group intends to do to get their station back on the air. Are they looking for a new station to purchase? If so...$500k is really not a lot of money when even dumpy AM stations in that market can still go for $4 million...and that doesn't count the cost of maintenance and payroll. A "full-market signal" will cost $10 million or more.
The 500k could go to brokering airtime from another station...or not owning the station, but just "renting" the airtime. The pitfalls here are that station can also be sold and there's no guarantee the format will survive and usually stations that are willing to sell so much airtime have some major signal problem...especially if it's AM.
Hopefully the "big boys" will come to the rescue for AAR listeners. While I destest Cheap Channel, they have been AAR's largest supporter and have found a lot of success with their stations...and rumor has it that they will be adding more affiliates in additional markets as the year moves along.
If there's someone affiliated with this group, could you please clarify what you'd like to do so the good people here can know what they're investing in and what results to expect.
Cheers...
