This is how to respond to climate change deniers! Comments on this site are welcome, as the heads-in-the-sand crowd have started a lively debate.

September 16, 2011 (Santee, CA) – SanDiego350.org, a coalition of three dozen community organizations, invited local officials to participate in a Sept. 24 event titled “Moving San Diego to a Clean Energy Future.” Far from fringe extremists, the group includes major entities such as the American Lung Association, U.S. Green Chamber of Commerce, San Diego-Imperial Counties Labor Council, Sustainability Alliance of Southern California, and Earthcare at First United Methodist Church.

Santee Mayor Randy Voepel fired back a vitriolic response. “I do not believe that climate change is man made,” the Mayor said in an e-mail declining the invitation, calling himself a “proud, Rush Limbaugh, Tea party, Conservative that will never cease fighting socialism.”

Voepel went on to state that he believes the “sun’s solar cycle” is the greatest influence on climate change and that “mankind’s impact on the climate is less than 2 tenths of a percent and even that is a challenge to the computer models to track with any accuracy.” He added, “I believe that `climate change’ is a fabrication of the left wing environmental types that are inherently anti-capitalist and liberal to the Nth degree. Al Gore and his misguided followers are sending this country to ruin in the name of a false “Climate Change” premise.” His signature line carries the title “Mayor, city of Santee, located in the People’s Republic of California, United Socialist States of America.”

Event organizers expressed disbelief, then amusement at Voepel’s fiery response.

While the Mayor is entitled to his opinion, there are some key flaws in Voepel’s conclusions...

Journalist on short deadline. Public records request shows emissions levels from a crematorium under investigation. 100+ complaints.

I need an expert who can tell me whether any of these levels are red flags/dangerous to human health.

I'm no expert but two that jumped out as high compared to others on the page are Hydrogen Chloride (159.25 pounds/year) and mercury (12.46 pounds/her); rest were all less than 2 pounds per year.

Facility is located next door to a fast-food restaurant and is very close to homes. More than 100 complaints over the years but county only measured air once a few years back, and these were the levels.

Should anything have been done based on those levels? There is a question now regarding objectivity of the inspector back then, who may have had overly cozy ties with this business. New inspector wants to shut it down, finally...question is should it have been done back when these levels were detected, or is this considered safe emissions?

With 3 core meltdowns occurring in Japan, what are the odds of a cloud of radiation that could reach Hawaii, the west coast of the US, China, etc? How long would it take? Could it already be on the way? Could it cause deaths, cancer, radiation poisoning this far away?

Should anyone outside of Japan be trying to get hold of iodine--and by the way where do you get it?

Journalist wants to know. Please state credentials and pm me besides whatever you post here, if you have expertise and are available for an interview. Thanks.

One of our local cities is voting tomorrow on whether to become a charter city, whatever that means. All I can find online seems to be hype from sources that I suspect are right wing (one site talking about"character cities"), others indicating these things are except from certain state and even national laws.

What are the down side of these? Need info ASAP!!!

Thanks.

Friends – The San Diego Union-Tribune, the region’s biggest paper, is running a poll on a proposal being brought forward locally to name the Coronado Bridge after Reagan. This is the major landmark for all ships entering San Diego Bay and is visible from all over San Diego including downtown.

Poll question:

Do you approve of the suggested name change from the Coronado Bridge to the Reagan Bridge?

Call 619-293-2506 and listen to the statement and hit 2 to have your vote counted to keep the current name.

Note: There is no limit on how many times people can call in and vote!

Naming a bridge for Reagan in San Diego is particularly offensive to many here, since San Diego has 19 Native American tribes, more than any other County in America. Reagan’s record on Indian issues was dismal. He tried to dismantle the Bureau of Indian Affairs, gutted healthcare on reservations, insulted Native Americans by suggested they should become citizens (they already were), and of course portrayed an Indian-killing cowboy in those B-grade movies.

If you agree, please vote, kick, recommend, and forward to like-minded friends.

(Moderators - I am the author of this piece and own the copyright, so posted slightly more than 4 paragraphs)

Folks - This has received hardly any press that I've seen. Did you know that Muslim extremists who bombed a church in Baghdad Oct. 31 have threatened violence against ALL Christians throughout the Middle East? Are we on the verge of a Holy War? What can be done to help the Assyrian Christians in Iraq? Please help get the word out far and wide about the plight of these poor people. I was the only media at the funeral mass tonight in the San Diego area for the 58 who died and 77 injured in the Iraq church bombing Oct. 31; I interviewed relatives of survivors and as usual the mainstream media was nowhere to be seen.

MONDAY PROTEST DOWNTOWN JOINS GLOBAL EFFORT TO HALT GENOCIDE OF CHRISTIANS IN IRAQ AMID ESCALATING VIOLENCE

East County Magazine

“We will keep our church open ‘til our last drop of blood is shed.” – Father Waseem Petrus, shortly before he was beheaded on the altar of his church in Baghdad on Oct. 31

“Enough bloodshed by the Christians. Our rights have been violated. This is not ony for the Christians in Iraq; this should be the concern of every Christian in the world.” –Vivian Haisha Shabilla, president, San Diego Chapter of the Assyrian Aid SocietyMourners filled Santa Sophia's church in Spring Valley

November 7, 2010 (Spring Valley) - Hundreds of mourners filled Santa Sophia’s Catholic church in Spring Valley tonight, where a mass was held in memory of at least 58 Assyrian Christians who died and 75 who were wounded in the October 31st attack by terrorists at an Assyrian church in Iraq. Many here lost family members or friends; their photos stood in front of the church altar, each with a single red rose—a little boy, a woman, men young and old. Draped across the altar a banner bore images of two slain priests: Fathers Thamir Abdal, 32, and Waseem Petrus, 27.

<snip>

A campaign on Facebook to organize worldwide demonstrations Monday to demand protections for Assyrians and other Christians in the Middle East has drawn over 45,000 signatures. The page is titled The March Against the Ethnic Cleansing of Iraq’s Indigenous Christians. According to the website www.ChristiansforIraq.com, Assyriains of Iraq have suffered genocide since June 25, 2004, date of the first church bombing. Since then, 66 churches have been bombed and thousands have been murdered.

<snip>

On Monday, November 8, from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., a demonstration will be held outside the federal building at 880 Front Street (corner of Front and Broadway) in downtown San Diego. Other demonstrations are planned in major cities in the U.S. and worldwide, including London, Cairo, Sydney, Los Angeles, San Jose, Modesto, Detroit, Windsor, Chicago, Las Vegas, Phoenix, Hartford, Toronto, and locations TBA in in Holland, Germany and Sweden. Organizers are asking that a United Nations or Iraqi commission be established to investigate the church massacre and recommend actions to protect Assyrians. They also call for the U.S. Congress and State Department to address Assyrian safety issues and for creation of an autonomous Assyrian state with its own police force to protect Assyrians.

TRENTON, Mich. - A custody hearing was held for two of Jennifer Petkov's children. A Wayne County Probate Court judge ruled on an emergency order. Her eight-year-old daughter and five-year-old son from a previous relationship will now move in with their father until further notice.

Petkov made headlines a few days ago after she admitted to taunting the family of 7-year-old Kathleen Edward, who is dying from Huntington's Disease. She posted disturbing photos of Kathleen of Facebook, and her husband Scott Petkov parked a coffin on the street in front of the girl's home.

The father of Petkov's children filed for the emergency hearing right after the story broke.

THE HEROES WHO ALLEGEDLY TOOK DOWN A GUNMAN (NBC San Diego)

Brendan L. O'Rourke is accused of firing at Kelly Elementary School students and grazing two girls with bullets

Dressed in black, carrying a 357 magnum, pockets full of ammunition and a gas can, a man walked onto a playground at Kelly Elementary School and emptied his gun into a crowd of children, according to witnesses. The bullets grazed the arms of two little girls, aged 6 and 7. Miraculously no one was killed, thanks, in part, to the heroic actions of several men.

Steven Kane, Mario Contreras and Carlos Partida were working in a construction area Friday when they heard shots and kids screaming. They ran around the building and saw a gunman, who police later identified as Brendan L. O'Rourke, 41, firing rounds as children ran for their lives.

<snip>

Kane and Contreras chased the suspect over the playground fence. Partida jumped into his own vehicle and drove to where the suspect had parked. "I hit him with my truck," Partida said. He knocked the suspect to the ground and the others held him down.

A fourth good Samaritan, Scott Chandler, was repairing a Jet Ski in his driveway when he heard two loud bangs and saw children running and screaming….Chandler, a professional surfer, approached the crowd after realizing the workers were pinning down the man.“He took a pretty good beating. I think the construction guys were wearing steel towed boots,” Chandler said.

Tonight's debate was broadcast on Univision. One in five California voters is Hispanic.

Apart from revelations that Whitman fired her Hispanic maid after learning she was undocumented (and may have known so for nine years), her answers to issues of importance at tonight's debate in my view hammered the nails into her political coffin. For instance:

Brown accused Whitman of saying "one thing in Spanish, one thing in English" regarding government benefits for illegal immigrants. He noted that she has said she would have opposed Proposition 187, a 1994 ballot measure that would have denied taxpayer benefits for illegal immigrants, but ran radio ads during the primary that said those in the country illegally should not receive such benefits.
"This is a question about talking out of both sides of her mouth," he said.
<snip>

Whitman was repeatedly pressed on whether, once the border is secured, she would allow a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants here; she refused to answer and instead repeated her campaign platform of securing the border and creating a temporary guest worker program.

Her stance led to an awkward encounter when a Cal State Fresno student in the audience told the candidates that she is about to graduate with honors but won't be able to find work because she is undocumented. She asked both candidates their positions on the DREAM Act, which would provide an opportunity for citizenship for some illegal immigrants who arrived in the United States as children, complete some college or military service and meet other requirements.

Brown said he would support the measure, and then added that his opponent does not think undocumented students should be allowed to enroll in state colleges. "She wants to kick you out of this school because you are not documented and that is wrong, morally and humanly," Brown said.

(Can you imagine any Latino parent voting for this woman after her answers to these questions?)

Rogue soldiers in Afghanistan

A group of U.S. soldiers from a platoon in the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade is accused of targeting Afghan civilians for sport.

By Craig Whitlock

WASHINGTON POST
Saturday, September 18, 2010; 9:39 PM

For weeks, according to Army charging documents, rogue members of a platoon from the 5th Stryker Combat Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, floated the idea. Then, one day last winter, a solitary Afghan man approached them in the village of La Mohammed Kalay. The "kill team" activated the plan.

One soldier created a ruse that they were under attack, tossing a fragmentary grenade on the ground. Then others opened fire.
According to charging documents, the unprovoked, fatal attack on Jan. 15 was the start of a months-long shooting spree against Afghan civilians that resulted in some of the grisliest allegations against American soldiers since the U.S. invasion in 2001. Members of the platoon have been charged with dismembering and photographing corpses, as well as hoarding a skull and other human bones.

This is sickening -- according to the story, one soldier told his father, who tried desperately to get the military to listen to him, but they blew off the warnings that U.S. soldiers were plotting and committing murders.

Woman, child feared dead in massive Calif. blast
Last Modified: Friday, Sep. 10, 2010 - 6:55 pm

FRESNO, Calif. -- Colleagues described her as a tenacious watchdog who spoke up to protect consumers from soaring monthly gas bills or dangerous pipeline expansions.

Friday, relatives feared longtime California Public Utilities Commission employee Jacqueline Greig and her daughter were among those killed in a massive blast that ripped through her neighborhood, the very type of disaster her work sought to prevent.

<snip>

Agustin Macedo of San Francisco told The Associated Press on Friday that Greig, who is his 44-year-old daughter, and his granddaughter died in the blast. Colleagues described Greig was a well-respected public servant who played a key role in encouraging PG&E and other investor-owned utilities to adopt consumer and environmental protections.

<snip>

"She was the lead advocate for natural gas cases, so we worked very very closely with her," said Mark Toney, executive director of The Utility Reform Network, a San Francisco-based nonprofit consumer advocacy group. "We just feel awful about this, for her, for her family and for the division."
