The rich will continue to have their toilets cleaned by the poor.
But the poor will learn a life's lesson by cleaning other people's toilets.

"I think we overvalue passionate feeling in this country as some form of cleansing sincerity. Feeling something has the sensation of actual knowledge, bypassing mental work, the necessity of thought and the application of reason, not to mention actual information. I think it is significant that among people suffering from dementia, the last thing to go is the ability to have a strident opinion. It is the easiest thing to generate."

The 1st $4896 of income is taxed at 10% = $489.60
The next bracket is $4897 - $16,896. The 1st $4896 is taxed at 10% and the next earnings up to $12,000 is taxed at 15%. Thus if your taxable income is $16,896 the actual tax rate would be 13.6% The next bracket is $16,897 - $39,552. The 1st $4896 is taxed at 10%, the next $12,000 is taxed at 15% and the remaining $22,656 is taxed at 25%. Thus if your taxable income is $39,552, the actual tax rate would be %20.1 The next bracket is $39,553 - $81,456. The 1st $4896 is taxed at 10%, the next $12,000 is taxed at 15% and the next $22,656 is taxed at 25% and the remaining $41,904 is taxed at 28%. Thus, if your taxable income is $81,456 the actual tax rate woudl be 24.17% The U.S. has only two more brackets. 33% for those earning between $81,457 - $175,956 (Using the formula above, actual tax rate would be 28.91%) And 35% for every single other person making above $175,957. Clearly we need to expand the brackets (and I think eliminate all taxes for those below the poverty rate).

to legislate less than the state level or eliminate sales taxes altogether.
And again, this is bullshit. The company that I work for must take out a resale license in every state in which we want to do business (that is, ship wine to). We collect the taxes and pay the taxes. What Amazon is arguing is putting a bone-headed ballot initiative on the ballot to dismantle current regulation.

From AFP via Forbes
http://www.google.com/hostednews/afp/artic... Health experts in Portugal said Friday that Portugal's decision 10 years ago to decriminalise drug use and treat addicts rather than punishing them is an experiment that has worked. "There is no doubt that the phenomenon of addiction is in decline in Portugal," said Joao Goulao, President of the Institute of Drugs and Drugs Addiction, a press conference to mark the 10th anniversary of the law. The number of addicts considered "problematic" -- those who repeatedly use "hard" drugs and intravenous users -- had fallen by half since the early 1990s, when the figure was estimated at around 100,000 people, Goulao said. Other factors had also played their part however, Goulao, a medical doctor added. "This development can not only be attributed to decriminalisation but to a confluence of treatment and risk reduction policies." Portugal's holistic approach had also led to a "spectacular" reduction in the number of infections among intravenous users and a significant drop in drug-related crimes, he added. http://blogs.forbes.com/erikkain/2011/07/0... / Also, Glenn Greenwald published a white paper about this subject a few years ago for the Cato Institute. The only time, I believe, he has published original material there and for which he's been smeared through guilt by association and mislabeled a libertarian. http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id... that a President can exercise when engaging our military in a new war.
(c) The constitutional powers of the President as Commander-in-Chief to introduce United States Armed Forces into hostilities, or into situations where imminent involvement in hostilities is clearly indicated by the circumstances, are exercised only pursuant to (1) a declaration of war, (2) specific statutory authorization, or (3) a national emergency created by attack upon the United States, its territories or possessions, or its armed forces. If any of the above conditions are met, the the 60 day condition kicks in. These are known as facts upon which and intelligent person may form an opinion. One method of teaching is to break down a complex problem and relate it to real life experiences. Here is an example from my own life... When my daughter was a new teenager, she wanted to go out with her friends at night (AKA; engaging the military). 1 ) Her Dad and I had a parental (AKA; Constitutional) duty that stipulated the she consult with us before she went out (AKA; engaging the military). 2 ) Even though she may have screamed, "I hate you and I can do what I want!", we nevertheless asserted our authority (AKA, The War Powers Resolution) and stipulated that: a ) Based on that discussion of; who, what, where, and when... and gleaning as much extraneous information as possible (phone numbers of friends and other parental units, bus schedules, etc.) her dad and I, in consultation with each other, would say yea or nay (AKA; declaration of war). b ) Recognize that we already said she could go to that concert two months ago (AKA; specific statutory authorization) c ) Allow for the fact that if there is an earthquake and we are unreachable she may arrange to meet up with her friends (AKA; respond to an attack). 3 )If and only if any of the above stipulations are operative then the following conditions will apply: a ) She must report when she reaches her destination (AKA; the 48 hour rule). b ) She must call us every hour (AKA; the 60 day rule). c ) We reserve the right to order her home at any time (AKA; the 30 day rule). There is nothing in that parental duty (Constitution) and the rules (The War Powers Act) that would have allowed my daughter to skip step #2 and to straight to step #3. (Edited to clean up some formatting.)

"Today, Lisbon’s trendy bars, Porto’s factories and the Algarve’s glamorous resorts are powered substantially by clean energy. Nearly 45 percent of the electricity in Portugal’s grid will come from renewable sources this year, up from 17 percent just five years ago."

"President Obama on Wednesday will make clear that he opposes any compromise that would extend the Bush-era tax cuts for the wealthy beyond this year, officials said, adding a populist twist to an election-season economic package that is otherwise designed to entice support from big businesses and their Republican allies. " September 30, 2010 http://content.usatoday.com/communities/th... The Obama administration has a new audio-visual aid to make its arguments about the George W. Bush tax cuts: The White House White Board. Austan Goolsbee, the newly installed chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, uses illustrations to argue that a Republican plan to extend the Bush tax cuts for the wealthiest Americans would cost the Treasury too much money and would not stimulate the economy.

These represent the élite citizen's imitation of noblesse oblige; that is, of pretending to be aristocrats or oligarchs, as opposed to being citizens."

Sun Sep 19th 2010, 03:07 AM I've been seeing this falsehood reported around the internet and repeated on DU with zero supporting evidence that it is true. I've spent an hour+ looking for evidence that FDL has anything to do with the "Dump Obama" Facebook page and I've come up with nothing.
I'm willing to eat my hat if offered proof to the contrary. (Edited for typo.) |
