Quick Thoughts On The Health Reform Bill
I think that all of us need to calm down. A lot of the provisions that had to be stripped from the Senate bill to please the GOP and throw a bone to the "Blue Dogs" may come back in the House version or be added in conference.
But perhaps this whole situation shows the need for funding and election reforms. Public funding of elections and real lobbying reform would mean that candidates and representatives would not be so beholden to CEO's and Corps. As well as allow for progressives to run m...
Thoughts on NYPD Blue
I remember watching the 1st season while I was at college in Rochester, NY. I wondered what all the commotion initially was about.
I was hooked! Of course, I had an odd favorite character--Officer Martinez (and Gina, who literally disappeared from one season to the next).
I actually wrote a poem after the ep where Det. Simone died (I'd later re-word it for Pat Tillman)

I heard yesterday on NPR and I think he makes a good point.
I for one think the push for "Welfare Reform" was a mix of another use of the GOP's strategy of creating an "outgroup" and over-optimism about the economy.
Promotion and relegation (a la European Soccer) in the NFL?
This would work better in Baseball than anything.

My response to Obama's speech
A few days after 9-11, I was on my way to deposit my paycheck and saw a group of anti-war protesters. I remarked to someone else that the fact that they were allowed to was what separated us from those who had attacked us earlier in the week.
A few months later, having realized that Bush had seen 9-11 as an opportunity to build a new American Empire, I was standing with those same activists.
From what I have seen just from titles of threads here on DU, and the contents of my inboxes, I'm t...
More verse
You gotta be;
fiercer than your fears,
and more determined
than your doubts.
You gotta be;
willing to challenge critics,
and able to stun skeptics.
You gotta be;
clever enough to create,
and daring enough to do.
You gotta be;
willing to work,
and resilient enough to rebound.
You got it?

My thoughts on the Gun Lobby
But it seems to me that the Gun Lobby utilizes a lot of thinking that's basically the militia movments rhetoric turned down a bit.
I really wish I could find the article Rolling Stone did after OK City on the ties between the 1st militia movement and the Gun Lobby.

If could go back to college
In that a book I'm using as part of my therapy has a set of questions that relate to going back in time.
I'd probably have gone to a different college; realizing now that my High School left me ill-prepared for any top-tier college, likely wouldn't have taken me seven years to finish a 4-year degree.
I also would have majored in Criminal Justice or forensics, instead of Computers. Or just gone to a tech school (ITT, DeVry) and gone into network security.

When you have AM-Radio and it's cable news affiliate to help promote it.
This is also why when a book like House of Bush--House of Saud or God Delusion does well it's such a surprise.

Thoughts on election reform
I wonder if maybe we progressives/liberals, etc should start trying to build the infrastructure that would allow 3rd parties to run.
Working for proportional representation in federal elections (IRV for Senate seats and proportional rep for the EC), and public funding of elections, media reform, etc, would have the added effect of making it so that truly progressive Democrats in the model of Wellstone and Kucinich could win races more easily as well.

This a friend of mine who is in a desperate search for a Doctor to help her. But what does it say about the current US health care system that she has to resort to begging for a doctor like a person would beg for change. Answering a question about my religious beliefs.
For one, I'm beginning to see God as more a force concept than a person.
Of course, many would say may faith is weak, and a few would say I'm weak for havinh faith in a deity of any sort.
I believe that Christ did exist, but I think a lot of his teachings are ignored or glossed over.
To me a "miracle" is any unique event--every day can be one (so can getting to see a friend you haven't seen in 20 years).
I hope this answers a few of your questions, and if not, ask more.

Divide and Conquer--GOP style?
The GOP knows how to use issues like Guns, etc to get people to vote against their economic interests.
Having those places lack an independent media may help too.

My thoughts on media reform
That there be at least ONE non-commerical station in each market, and NPR doesn't count for this purpose, or allow for low-power radio (a la Prometheus) and you may have something.
We do need a new "Fairness Doctrine"--but it doesn't concern opinions as much as access.

Inspired by "The Crow"
Nightwalker
Dark rage,
where a soul should be.
Vengeance,
replacing compassion.
Seek out,
those who cursed me
to live
in this limbo;
dead,
but alive.
Her memories
haunt me,
fuel me.
They all must die!
So I may die,
and join her.
Where we can be
together forever.

I was in 4th grade and when my Mom went into the basement to get my costume out to clean it before Halloween, it was found to have gotten wet beyond use.
Fortunately my Mom worked at a hospital, and a raid of the supply closet yielded operating room attire (gloves, surgical mask, etc).
My dress shoes and some fake blood from a friends vampire costume and--one mad Doctor;)

The idea that Obama represents an America that has become more tolerant, diverse and urban.
One need only look at the homogeneous communities and states that the GOP and Right seem to represent and you can see what Beck, etc are worried about.
"Their America" is dying little by little. Obama's strong showing among younger folks may mean that the ideas of White, Male, Heterosexual, Fundamentalist Christian, superiority may be on it's last legs.
Except among the teabaggers, etc. . .
