Without the rape, she would not have been murdered

Rape was the motive for the murder. Or more precisely, the motive was to cover up the rape. And the murder of her family was to eliminate every witness to the rape.

From what I've read, the rape was premediated for days, if not weeks. It went from basic lust to basic barbarism. And once they crossed that line, there was nothing they were unable to do, including murder.
