Beagles Up!
 Excellent letter by Ambassador Peter Bridges (To Somalia under Reagan) here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/amb-peter-br... ...Our Service has sometimes been criticized by Republicans who label us a bunch of liberals. I cannot speak for my former colleagues, but as I said in a recent essay, if we must use labels I want to be considered a liberal conservative. I am a conservative because, among other reasons, I believe in a prudent course for the country, including a conservative fiscal policy and conservation -- two old Republican virtues that present-day Republicans have forgotten.
In the Foreign Service we serve the President and the Constitution faithfully -- I served under seven Presidents, finally as ambassador to Somalia under President Reagan -- and we do our best by our country. We do not speak lightly about national security. Five of my friends and colleagues were killed by terrorists. More American ambassadors have died violent deaths since World War II than our admirals and generals combined. Two other friends and colleagues were kidnapped by terrorists, but survived.
I have backed Obama since I wrote, in early 2007, the review of his second book that I hope you will read at The Cal Review. He is a prudent manager, a professor of constitutional law, and a moral and upright man with sound judgment. I agree with Colin Powell that Obama is fully qualified to be commander in chief. He understands the problems that we face at home and abroad, and he will begin -- though it will take years -- to resolve them. He has a sturdy and experienced running mate, Joe Biden, whom I have admired greatly since I first met him in 1981.

http://www.newyorker.com/reporting/2008/10... Excellent read of Palin's swift and unlikely rise to the national ticket. (Hint: Bill Kristol - wrong AGAIN) Some excerpts: Palin’s sudden rise to prominence, however, owes more to members of the Washington élite than her rhetoric has suggested ..<snip>..
Upon being elected governor, Palin began developing relationships with Washington insiders, who later championed the idea of putting her on the 2008 ticket. “There’s some political opportunism on her part,” Bitney said. For years, “she’s had D.C. in mind.” He added, “She’s not interested in being on the junior-varsity team.”
<snip>
The ...journalists who met Palin offered similarly effusive praise: Michael Gerson called her “a mix between Annie Oakley and Joan of Arc.” The most ardent promoter, however, was Kristol, and his enthusiasm became the talk of Alaska’s political circles. According to Simpson, Senator Stevens told her that “Kristol was really pushing Palin” in Washington before McCain picked her. Indeed, as early as June 29th, two months before McCain chose her, Kristol predicted on “Fox News Sunday” that “McCain’s going to put Sarah Palin, the governor of Alaska, on the ticket.” He described her as “fantastic,” saying that she could go one-on-one against Obama in basketball, and possibly siphon off Hillary Clinton’s supporters. He pointed out that she was a “mother of five” and a reformer. “Go for the gold here with Sarah Palin,” he said. The moderator, Chris Wallace, finally had to ask Kristol, “Can we please get off Sarah Palin?”
<snip>
McCain had met Palin once, but their conversation—at a reception during a meeting of the National Governors Association, six months earlier—had lasted only fifteen minutes. “It wasn’t a real conversation,” said the longtime (McCain) friend, who called the choice of Palin “the fucking most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.” Aides arranged a phone call between McCain and Palin, and scrutinized her answers to some seventy items on a questionnaire that she had filled out. But McCain didn’t talk with Palin in person again until the morning of Thursday, August 28th. Palin was flown down to his retreat in Sedona, Arizona, and they spoke for an hour or two. By the time he announced her as his choice, the next day, he had spent less than three hours in her company.
It's a lengthy, "inside baseball" article, but very well done
 I can't stop laughing McCain Refers to Opponent as "Barack Hussein Stalin Robespierre Hitler Pol Pot Idi Amin Gaiseric The Vandal Obama" Jerry and Joe Long | Bio
Wheeling, WV--John McCain told supporters today that Barack Obama is a "good and decent man," but that he "fundamentally disagrees" with what he termed "that one's plan" to "crucify untold numbers of Christians when he seizes power."
In a rambling and often contradictory speech, McCain praised Obama for "raising two wonderful daughters." Yet he quickly added, "What I fear my friends is when he and his hordes sack Washington. How they will smash our statues and melt down our gold. And the impaling my friends. Ohh the impaling".
When questioned about the seeming incoherence of McCain's speech, campaign lobbyist/manager Rick Davis denied both that the speech ever took place and that the technology exists for a linear method of storing information on digital tape.

...this is why he's always been my favorite conservative. Hilarious author, too - even when he's skewering liberals. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/10/10/w... http://www.thedailybeast.com/blogs-and-sto... / ...As for Senator Obama: He has exhibited throughout a “first-class temperament,” pace Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.’s famous comment about FDR. As for his intellect, well, he’s a Harvard man, though that’s sure as heck no guarantee of anything, these days. Vietnam was brought to you by Harvard and (one or two) Yale men. As for our current adventure in Mesopotamia, consider this lustrous alumni roster. Bush 43: Yale. Rumsfeld: Princeton. Paul Bremer: Yale and Harvard. What do they all have in common? Andover! The best and the brightest.
I’ve read Obama’s books, and they are first-rate. He is that rara avis, the politician who writes his own books. Imagine. He is also a lefty. I am not. I am a small-government conservative who clings tenaciously and old-fashionedly to the idea that one ought to have balanced budgets. On abortion, gay marriage, et al, I’m libertarian. I believe with my sage and epigrammatic friend P.J. O’Rourke that a government big enough to give you everything you want is also big enough to take it all away.
But having a first-class temperament and a first-class intellect, President Obama will (I pray, secularly) surely understand that traditional left-politics aren’t going to get us out of this pit we’ve dug for ourselves. If he raises taxes and throws up tariff walls and opens the coffers of the DNC to bribe-money from the special interest groups against whom he has (somewhat disingenuously) railed during the campaign trail, then he will almost certainly reap a whirlwind that will make Katrina look like a balmy summer zephyr.

When Mr. Wenner asked how Mr. Obama might respond to harsh attacks from Republicans, suggesting that Democrats have “cowered” in the past, Mr. Obama replied, “Yeah, I don’t do cowering.”http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/06... / To wit: “Turn the page on the financial crisis by launching dishonorable, dishonest ‘assaults’ against Barack Obama. Struggling families can't turn the page on this economy, and we can't afford another president who is this out of touch.” Then Obama says: “I'm Barack Obama and I approved this message.” http://news.yahoo.com/s/politico/20081005/... and... "On a day after we learned that America lost three-quarters of a million jobs this year and a week after our financial system teetered on the brink of collapse, John McCain and his campaign have announced that they want to 'turn the page' on the economic crisis facing working families and spend the last month of this election launching dishonest, dishonorable character attacks against Barack Obama. We understand that it's not easy for John McCain to defend the worst economic record of our lifetime, but he will have to explain to the people struggling to pay their bills and stay in their homes why he would rather spend his time tearing down Barack Obama than laying out a plan to build up our economy," said Obama-Biden Spokesman Bill Burton.

 Oh wait, that's the opposite.
Ever since Obama declared his candidacy, I've often thought of this exchange from the 2004 campaign. Little Lord Fauntleroy arrogantly thinks he can marginalize someone by asserting he never heard of him. Rep. Jan Schakowsky (D-IL) delivers the precient smackdown: ...Many Americans -- indeed, many Democrats -- had never heard of the charismatic politician before he delivered a stirring speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston in July 2004.
He called on Americans to leave behind party polarization, saying, "There is not a liberal America and a conservative America; there's the United States of America."
The speech instantly made Obama a star, with political pundits suddenly predicting the state senator who had not yet been elected to the U.S. Senate might someday be positioned for a presidential run.
Rep. Jan Schakowsky, D-Ill., said at the time that during a meeting with President Bush in February of 2004, the Congresswoman wore an Obama button on her coat.
"I don't know him," Bush said, according to Schakowsky.
"Oh, you will, Mr. President," she responded.
Just another reason I'm gratified Barack is our nominee. http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/Vote2008/St...
Because if it had, the Administration and their media toolbox would have shouted it from the rooftops the MINUTE they got the information.
Forget all the generic "Torture has prevented attacks" claims from the White House, the CIA and Pentagon. I call 'Bullshit'. If torture had foiled ONE bona-fide plan to attack American targets, this Administration would have been all OVER the news trumpeting the success that very day. The RW scream machine would have gone into high gear. Rush, Hannity and O'Reilly would have come all over themselves.
Look at the hype surrounding the Miami goofballs, the JFK airport pizza delivery man 'plot', and that poor stupid bastard Jose Padilla. If the Bush gang thinks they have something on you, FOX, Blitzer and the rest of the stenographers in the media will have in it every American living room by dinner time.
Torture has not prevented one attack. Bank it.
