I appreciate Keith. But you don't beat these guys by reacting or addressing their accusations. Ignore their accusations because THEY ARENT FUCKING LISTENING TO REBUTTALS IN CASE ANYBODY HASN'T NOTICED. You beat them by accusing them, by playing their game and fighting fire with fire. Sometimes it's not easy being a DU'er from Florida, especially Orlando. You have to constantly explain yourself and your fellow Floridians, like "oh yeah that Floridian went and axe-murdered his roomate, with two-axes, because they had run out of toilet paper". That kind of thing. Sometimes you just need a break, you need to go somewhere where everybody knows your name.

I've never been to a DU meet-up, and seeing as how Orlando and the I-4 corridor is ground-zero for a lot of political bullshit - i think the DU'ers of Orlando, and it's hinterlands, need to come together like Voltron right here in Central Florida. What say you? I'm just throwing this idea out there with no other real idea of how it's going to work - to see if its something that anybody's down with. I know there are a ton of great and vibrant DU'ers out there from this area so spread the word and see if anybody's down.

the war in the Phillipines was a real eye-opener for me, I found out about that war about 3 months ago, and I'm in my late twenties, I found it only when I decided for myself to find out about what the entire Spanish/AMerican war was about.

The run-up to the Spanish American war is almost the W playbook verbatim. Remember the Maine?

Surprisingly Zinn didn't touch on 9-11 in all of this, i understand he basically knocked this article into the upper deck, but to not place 9-11 into all this seemed a little facile. I'm noy saying 9-11 Never Forget OMG Long Live Dale Earnhart USA USA! but to not place 9-11 into the historical milieu is a mistake. He missed an opportunity to make the Maine/WTC metaphor, if nothing more.

A friend of mine made a great point the other day. And this point has been made on DU but I think its worth restating and exploring. She said, all fired up, essentially "how can we claim to be waging a war on terrorism when we don't have the temerity, the will, or the 'right' to go after our domestic terrorists with lethal military or paramilitary force."

The differences between Al Qaeda and, say, the KKK are few - and the differencs that do exist are essentially aesthetic. Different religions, languages, appearances etc. In the end both advocate the violent overthrow of everything that we consider American and replacing it with rigid fundamentalism. Are they not both equally dangerous and committed enemies who have openly stated their goals, and openly advocated violence? What is the death toll of the KKK and other militant domestic terrorist groups? What if the KKK or another militant group strengthens to the point of attacking us, and really haven't they already? Weren't their sufficient enough warning signs?

I had entertained this thought before but never truly thought deep enough about it, it took somebody less interested in politics to get fired up about it to really convey how true it was. I responded to her that we let the KKK exist because there is freedom of expression in this country, and unless we want our rights removed we should defend another's right to express themselves. But she was right, I determined, this was a contradiction to the rhetoric of the "war on terror." Terrorists don't have a right to advocate our destruction - we have a duty to stop them using any weapon at our disposal. What gives the KKK and other, perhaps more powerful, militant groups a right to exist?

i'm pessimistic because I have every fucking reason to be.

To be optimistic in this environment is to be blissfully ignorant as far as I'm concerned.

The damage wrought, to me, is already more than can be ameliorated simply by watching another scandalous event go down the memory hole. What happened to justice?
