...but for WHAT JOBS? It cracks me up to hear idiot politicians (of any stripe) babbling about spending money on "job training" in the US. FOR WHAT JOBS? There ARE no jobs out there that require training. LACK OF EDUCATION / TRAINING ISN'T THE PROBLEM. The PROBLEM is that all our jobs have been sent ELSEWHERE - and I notice NO ONE is doing anything about THAT. WHAT PLANET does our gov't live on? Job training? It's a ruse, a distraction, and as useless as a PLUG NICKEL. It's a "see we're ...

"But why then did Obama pick him for Afghanistan? In the wake of horrifying news of unintended civilian casualties, in a war where the US is already intensely unpopular, Obama has picked a leader who can be directly linked to the worst images and incidents of prisoner torture and abuse under Bush." (Link) (Image) "In June 2004, Stephen A. Cambone, a top Pentagon official, ordered his deputy, Lt. Gen. William G. Boykin, to look into allegations of detainee abuse at Camp Nama." (Link) (Link)

Have you asked the American people what they want in the way of health care reform? Or, does their opinion (they who are MOST effected by it) not count? Why do you bother with it? Why not save your time and taxpayer money and just leave the broken for-profit (by denying payment for care) system in place? Without a PUBLIC, Medicare for ALL option from which to choose - an option that it has been made clear is NOT even being considered - then we DO NOT HAVE HEALTH CARE REFORM and you are WASTI...

The following index ran in this week's Facing South e-newsletter. Estimated value of assets the IRS believes to be held in offshore tax havens, countries with nominal taxes and minimal reporting requirements: $5 trillion Number of countries that aggressively market themselves as tax havens: at least 40 Percent of the biggest U.S. corporations that utilize tax havens: 80 Number of U.S. companies that maintain post office boxes in one 5-story building in the Cayman Islands, a notorious tax ha...

(NOT that I expect the majority of people in THIS society to ever grok that...) ... I dread to think of how Susan would have left the stage if her voice had been less than exceptional. She would have been humiliated in front of 11 million viewers. It's the equivalent of being put in the stocks in front of the nation instead of the village. It used to be a punishment handed out to criminals. Now it is the fate of anyone without obvious sexual allure who dares seek opportunity. This small, brav...

John McCain ran for President beneath the phrase: "Country First", and lost, thank God. So, our new Democratic President entered office with multiple daunting crises on his plate, created by the last administration, a Republican one, and left for him to clean up. There's the economic crisis, and the climate crisis, to name two. Then, there's Iraq/Afghanistan, and the healthcare crisis and yes, that's another damn fine mess Republicans made - starting with Nixon. Our new President, only 30 da...

A woman is not a pear tree thrusting her fruit in mindless fecundity into the world. Even pear trees bear heavily one year and rest and grow the next. An orchard gone wild drops few warm rotting fruit in the grass but the trees stretch high and wiry gifting the birds forty feet up among inch long thorns broken atavistically from the smooth wood. A woman is not a basket you place your buns in to keep them warm. Not a brood hen you can slip duck eggs under. Not the purse holding the coins of y...

After Edwards left the race (he was my choice) I was on the fence for a few months. Wasn't crazy about Hillary or Obama. I wanted to support Hillary because I'd like to see a woman in the Oval Office. But I was on the fence between her and Obama and I'm still am not really crazy about either of them. We had better choices but they're all gone now. I partially blame the media for that - but that's another rant. So I watched for a while what was going on with Pastorgate, and Hillary Clinton right...

It's all about me me me me me me me....if "me me me me" is OK - then "me me me me me me" thinks everything is OK and if someone ELSE isn't (the vet who sleeps under the bridge down the street) well bigga deal. "LET THEM EAT CAKE!" ...says she of her own constituents outside her home and the rest of us urging her to (God forbid) do OUR will since she is (supposedly) OUR representative "up there". Of course there is some debate that Marie Antoinette ever actually uttered that phrase, but nonetheless, her apparent self-important, bubbleheaded attitude certainly matches Nancy's, thus I give you Nancy Marie Antionette Pelosi: (Image) Same attitude, different century.

It is a very proud day when we have TWO Democratic Presidents who have won the Nobel Peace Prize: Yourself and The Honorable Jimmy Carter. You are in VERY good company! President Gore, you are a true visionary and regardless of what some right-wing pundits and the media says or does - MANY MANY people around the World LOVE you and support you. When the election was thrown to George W. Bush in 2000, you said to your supporters "I won't forget you". NEVER forget that those same people and n...

The future of independent magazines like Ms., Mother Jones, The Nation, etc. is at risk with a massive new postage hike! The U.S. Postal Service has accepted a Time Warner proposal that would significantly increase postage rates for smaller magazines, while reducing costs for the nation's largest publishers like Hearst and, you guessed it, Time Warner. Ms. is working with Free Press, a national non-partisan organization working to reform media, and the Media Consortium, including Mother Jones...

By Riane Eisler, AlterNet Posted on April 19, 2007, Printed on April 23, 2007 (Link)/ If you're a woman, or a man who cares about his mother, sister, or daughter, there's something you need to know. Seventy percent of those living in absolute poverty in our world -- that is starving or on the edge of starvation -- are female. Not only that, in our wealthy United States, women and children are the mass of the poor and the poorest of the poor. Women are entitled to know that statistically women ...

...and won't run in 2008. And I'm quite at Peace with that, and here's why: What happened in 2000 was unprecedented. Gore WON that election. We know that. But he didn't get the job. It was excruciatingly disappointing for us all. If there was ANYONE who was qualified to lead the United States of America into a new Millennium, it was Al Gore. It really HURT to see the most unqualified, brain-dead, poor excuse for even a monkey get the job, instead - on his Daddy's name and his Daddy's connection...

Okay. I KNEW they were out there but I guess I didn't know they were so organized: (Link) "National Coalition of Free Men" (?) Read some of the crap they have on this page about women (and how much of the truth they leave OUT of their "facts"): _ _ _ _ _ American men have been raised to feel sorry for American women. It is wrapped in the old expression, "A Woman's Work is never done". The charge made by American feminists that all men had "oppressed" women was an easy charge to get past th...

“…chose their own political security rather than our national security and followed george bu$h into the wrong war (Iraq) - and then they lost that war”... I’ll add that that while the Republic Party has been busily fighting the wrong war for power, profit and political gain, the REAL war (on terrorism) has become more deadly than ever. The debacle in Iraq has naught but created more Anti-American sentiment — and more terrorists — hellbent on destroying the US. It has exacerbated the problem. ...

NASA has quietly terminated the Deep Space Climate Observatory, citing "competing priorities." The news media took little notice. Few Americans, after all, had even heard of the program. But the entire world may come to mourn its passing. Earth is growing warmer. Even the most strident global-warming deniers have taken to saying that a little warming is a good thing. If the trend continues, however, it will have catastrophic consequences for life on this planet. Correctly identifying the cause ...

(WOMENSENEWS)--As a young woman, I stepped out into the treacherous waters of opinion journalism, and was amazed by the lack of civil discourse and the intensity of personal attacks that I received via e-mail, letters to the editor and on Web postings. Subjects such as women's issues, racism, anti-war politics, environmental matters and virtually any topic deemed "liberal" inspired some vitriolic comments from readers that I will mention here. I was called everything from "bitch" to "whore" an...

Why is oil exploitation bad? Simply speaking, oil exploitation in the Ecuadorian Amazon is bad for the people, for the environment, and for the local economy. A brief look at Tenaâs northern neighbors, oil-towns Lago Agrio and Coca, shows this problem. Reckless oil exploitation has caused contamination of the ground, rivers, and air. Both cities suffer from social problems such as malnutrition, prostitution, and crime. Indigenous groups in the Amazon have a direct relationship to their land, a...

I see these two completely different but identically pronounced words so often mixed up HERE on DU that it's making me nuts. Misusing words like this makes us sound so - erm, Freeperish and it makes me cringe every time I see it done. So HERE are the proper usages and definitions of HEAR vs. HERE: _ _ _ _ _ HEAR: To perceive by the ear; to apprehend or take cognizance of by the ear; as, to hear sounds; to hear a voice; to hear one call. HERE: At or in this place: Stop here for a rest. _ ...

Women Happier as Homemakers? Time to Recheck Data Run Date: 03/22/06 By Rivers and Barnett WeNews commentators A recent study bandied about in the news media finds women are more happily married when their husbands win the bread. The finding is so different from related research that our commentators call it an "outlier" not to be trusted. ... Here We Go Again Here we go again. Speech held by Ayaan Hirsi Ali in Köln on Internetaional Women's Day The Gendercide against us By Ayaan Hirsi Ali ... -- In countries where the birth of a boy is considered a gift and the birth of a girl a curse from the gods, selective abortion and infanticide eliminate girl babies. -- Young girls die disproportionately from neglect, because food and medical attention is given first to brothers, fathers, husbands and sons. -- In countries where women are considered the property of men, t...

By Molly Wood, executive editor, CNET.com Monday, March 13, 2006 Molly Wood A whole lot of guns are lined up against the Net right now: Net neutrality/two-tiered Internet issues; increasing discomfort over the U.S. control of Internet operation; China's moves to create its own domain system (a possible prelude to a new, country-specific, alternate root system); supposition that, with Vint Cerf and a bunch of dark fiber in hand, Google might be looking to create its own Internet--and of course, ...

... Overall, elite boys are doing well academically. More males than females attend Ivy League schools. And while we have been hearing that boys are virtually disappearing from college classrooms, among whites, the gender composition of colleges is pretty balanced; 51 percent female and 49 percent male, according to the National Education Association. "On most measures boys--at least the middle-class white boys everyone seems concerned about--are doing just fine, taking their places in an uneq...
