Truth Hurts A Lot's Journal
I wish people on DU would stop circulating the meme that blacks are more homophobic--it is not supported by facts. ...there is no point in fetishizing black homophobia, for there is nothing essentially antigay about black Americans either. Whatever African-Americans think about gay rights, the fact is they don't think about it very much. Of the thousands of black people interviewed by David Bositis, an analyst at the JCPES, not one has volunteered it as a priority. Other surveys show blacks are more likely than whites to support antidiscrimination laws that protect gays and lesbians. Indeed, according to the Human Rights Campaign score card, black legislators have done a better job of defending gay rights than white Democrats. In other words, when black people have the power to protect gay rights in law, they are more likely to use it than other racial groups.
Despite these facts many white liberals are peculiarly invested in the notion that African-Americans are backward on all social issues except race. What this assumption is based on other than an innate sense of superiority is not clear. What is obvious is that it will have to be confronted before any progressive coalition capable of mounting an effective challenge to the right can be built. http://www.thenation.com/doc/20060213/youn... Now getting to the McClurkin thing--McClurkin is a grammy award winning gospel artist. That is the only reason he was invited. If the audience was indeed homophobic and seeking a homophobic artist, then wouldn't they have preferred someone who was not gay at all?
Written May 18, 2006: The U.S. House of Representatives will shift to the Democrats in November 2006.
During the U.S. Presidential Election of 2008, no candidate will achieve a majority number of electoral votes. By law, the President in 2008 will be chosen by the House of Representatives. This has happened once previously in U.S. history. John Quincy Adams was chosen by the House of Representatives under similar circumstances.
In this case, the chosen President will be Hillary Rodham Clinton. This will lead to charges of "illegitimacy" and loud & violent dissent by U.S. Republicans. Eventually, a general Congressional boycott of Clinton will be staged by the GOP.
...
The 2008 Presidential Election may witness a third "National Unity Party" of a McCain/Lieberman presidential ticket, which will split the voting public into thirds.
During her short tenure of 3 years, Hillary Rodham Clinton will fall into many traps laid carefully by an NSA and CIA stacked with Bush Administration appointees.
...
Clinton will also be led into a successful assassination of the legitimate, democratically-elected President of Venezuela, who shares her initials: Hugo Rafael Chavez. The assassination of Chavez during Clinton's tenure will provoke an irreparable rift between the U.S. and Latin America. http://www.prophecies.us/article.php?sid=1...
Make over 60k/annually; 34% make over 100k/annually. With more honest participants, I'm sure the percentages would be a lot higher. They make loads of money and can afford (might even secretly welcome) more Republican rule. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discu... Updated as more people become honest in that poll.
Much like the repubs played the "christian right?" That's been on my mind since hearing about Obey's outburst, coupled with the fact that not much has been done about immediately ending this war for profit.
The emperors clothes are off and this new congress/Pelosi thing has exposed the wing of Dems who are mainly lip service but at the end of the day couldn't care less about holding Bush and others accountable for this war.
I forgive, because I don't hold grudges. But I will never forget and frankly, everyone who took part in making this war possible belongs in prison. How dare anyone suggest that the 1 million or so lives lost isn't that big a deal?! Wow!
ETA: I forgive Dems who voted that way due to cowardice and bad information, not never Bush&Co
In a prison cell.
Now, obviously nobody in the congress/senate will be forced to take that much responsibility for their votes.
Still, "mistakes" of this magnitude should not be tolerated. It's very easy to brush this off as a mistake, as we lay down comfortably in our homes at night--with food, electricity, schools, and little or no fear of being blown to bits as we sleep.
At the very least, we should send the message that political posturing at a time when hundreds of thousands of lives are at stake will be an automatic disqualification from future presidential races.
This war has no end in site. Where is the compassion for the wounded and dead troops, or for the close to 1 million dead Iraqis?
Does anyone think that particular statement got us more votes? If not, what was the point?
I can't stand when Dems turn on each other, especially in the limelight, but consider this:
Ford is running in the southern red state of Tennessee as a BLACK MAN. He is doing everything possible to try to get elected so we can have an extra seat in the Senate. Kerry, as usual, screwed up and fulfilled the stereotype so many people (Dems and Repugs) have of him by stating he wouldn't apologize to apologizing when the pressure got too tough. If you want to get mad at anyone, get mad at Kerry.
Why so much 'fake outrage' and so little discussion of the real issues? Do blacks have a voice on DU or just here for ridicule and mocking? I learned the hard way today that certain groups are just above discussing.
Makes about as much sense as labeling me "homophobic," despite me saying several times that I believe we should fight for civil rights for all. My only mistake was saying homophobia is not the same as racism. I'm done!!!!
And I only bring this up because so many posts today are substituting the word "black" for "gay" to get a reaction.
First off, in this country, a nonwhite person will be quickly prejudged based on the color of his/her skin (most of the time).
Nonwhites do not have the option of simply not revealing their race--it is immediately noticeable (in most cases). Therefore, racial minorities face a different set of challenges in every aspect of American life--from equal education, to securing home loans, to getting employment, equal pay, etc.
On the other hand, a gay person has the option of whether or not to reveal his or her sexual orientation (in most cases). I haven't heard of any cases where gays are automatically cheated by lenders and what not. Or automatically charged a higher price when purchasing a vehicle. This is why a lot of African Americans take offense when some gays and/or Jewish people (who in many cases might look just as caucasian as a non-Jewish person) claim to face the same discrimination. One of the biggest issues faced by gay americans is the right to marry. Well I'm sorry, it's just not the same.
That every now and then, the BFEE goes after regular and/or famous people to shift the news cycle (plus subconciously keep Americans in fear--this incident is eerily similar to the WTC attack).
Imagine that you were hired as the White House's newest intern, and had direct contact with Dumbya on a regular basis. Would you pull a Lewinsky or something similar to finally get * impeached? This question is directed towards women AND men
Does it sound hateful to you?
Or do you agree with it?
Should our government put the issues and concerns/needs of American citizens first, or is that a selfish point of view?
I've seen Giuliani in a few interviews, the man is not bright at all. He's quick on his feet (unlike Bush), but when it comes to serious topics the man is much like Bush in many ways. Dumb as nails. Besides, he gets all this credit for what he did on 9/11, but nobody ever asks why he didn't evacuate both towers as soon as the first plane hit. But nevermind all that, this is why we need to start exposing Giuliani: http://www.pollingreport.com/2008.htm Pay close attention to how well he does with voters in general and independents.
I heard some right wing nuts complaining about this on the radio. A few asked if any reparation monies would be used to, and I quote, "buy crack."
