Ohio Politics and Beyond - VolcanoJen's Journal
Hello everyone,
I realize it's a few days late, but here's the scoop on my Inauguration Day (Mis)Adventure!!
I was one of the Blue-ticketed people who never made it into the Inauguration Ceremony, or, as we like to call it, The Blue Ball Ticket To Nowhere! What a sad and unorganized mess that was. Just massive crowds, no security, no directions, no police presence, no nuthin'. We arrived at the Blue security entrance at 8:30 and waited patiently for three hours in the cold, packed in like p...
Greetings from Washington, DC, DUers!!
Just a very quick dispatch because I'm finally back at the hotel and I am utterly exhausted.
As a Blue Standing Area ticket holder, I was so excited to make my way into the district this morning. Such immense crowds (I was near Union Station), such smiling faces, such elation from all!
The signage from Union Station was poor, but we finally made our way to the security checkpoint for the Blue ticket holders, at Washington Avenue near 1st Street. It w...
I can't stop bouncing!!!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
I can't remember the last time I was this excited about something. Well, OK, maybe on November 4th. :-)
Yay!!! I'll be sure to do some DU live-blogging-posting for everyone from the event!
:bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Yipeee!!!!!!!
Edit: Sorry about the crappy camera-phone quality, but here are some pics. I've also included photos of the commemorative MARC Train tickets!

C'mon Ohio!!!! I'm exhausted from working my ass off on this campaign, but I am "rationally exhuberant!"

I wanna give you guys Ohio soooooo bad.
At the rally Friday (Halloween!) afternoon in Kettering (Dayton), Ohio.
It was just too much fun. Got right up close, watched the gorgeous Jill Biden give her speech, out came Joe, he rocked the house! Best line of the speech? "I know it's Halloween, folks, but John McCain dressed up as an Agent of Change is a costume that just doesn't work!"
At the end of the speech, he urged all of us here in Ohio who feel knocked down by this economy, by this war, by these wretched eight years, to just G...
WTF???? Did the RNC buy this for her too????? Is she trying to be funny? Because, I'm laffin'!

Edit - Update: Looks like the photos and video were taken at her Reno, Nevada rally on October 21. She's wearing the same outfit in other news photos from the event, but not the scarf. Maybe someone in the crowd gave it to her? If so, I would like to shake that person's hand. :-)
Football fans will remember the classic Superbowl ad campaign of Terry Tate, the linebacker-turned-office manager who whipped the cubicle crowd into shape by, basically, tackling the crap out of them at unexpected turns.
Well, Terry's back!! And this time he shows up at Katie Couric's interview with Sarah Palin. Prepare to laugh your ass off!

Here's the original Terry Tate classic ad, from the 2003 Super Bowl:

Sorry this report is a little late, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. And I hope it gets you FIRED UP and READY TO GO!!!!
Thursday, October 9, 2008 - Cincinnati, Ohio - Ault Park
On a beautiful October day in Cincinnati, Ohio, bathed in resplendent sunshine in gorgeous Ault Park, I saw for myself the Next President of the United States.
The day began on a bit of a sour note. At a Sunoco in Covington, Kentucky, picking up some coffee and wearing my Obama shirt, a man asked me if I was on ...
Riddle me this... over the weekend, weren't McCain advisors hushing up the media by telling them Sarah was headed back to Alaska to spend time with her oldest son, Track, who is due to deploy to Iraq on September 11? You know, like, in four days? And that's why she would be unavailable to the media?
What happened to that whopper? She's been to New Mexico, Colorado, Missouri and now Ohio since the media lapped up the latest McCain excuse for "Where's Waldo."
Edit: For those not fami...
"Who Wants To Be America's Next Insult Comic?"
"Who Wants To Be America's Next Commander-in-Chief?"
It really is quite staggering, isn't it?
But... don't overestimate the crazy. I mean, it's loud, and it is crazy. But shouting us down and being louder is part of the strategy... bending reality works... in the short-term. We are certainly a nation of and Short Attention Spans, so don't expect "us" to be able to buy this crock of shit for sixty f'n days. Time to stop flipping out and overest...
Does anyone remember this documentary by Nancy Pelosi's daughter, way back in the 2000 election season?

The gist of the whole thing, which unfolded in frightening real-time to those of us who were watching closely, is that Bush won the presidency by courting the media, by cozying up to them, by literally kissing their asses and giving them bologna sandwiches on a jet and making them feel special.
Our media is weird. They are a fickle lot, our fourth-estaters. They suck, to be kind. ...
A Toast, to all that we have accomplished.
Today marked the day of George W. Bush's last Republican National Convention. That's a moment we shouldn't let pass without lifting a glass.
A Toast, to the fact that the failures of the last eight years, and especially the last four years, prevented The American President from appearing at his own last Republican National Convention in person. They can blame it on the worst calamity in the history of the Republic Hurricane Gustav all they want, but...
At the request of the darling DUer redqueen, I'm starting my own thread on this, which originated
What we are witnessing today at the Democratic National Convention, not inside the hall mind you, but on the streets, covered dutifully by our Awesome Liberal Sideshow Carnival Media, is nothing more, nothing less than an Epic, Orchestrated, Classic GOP Ratfuck. It really doesn't have a rip to do with the Clintons; the GOP is just betting you'll think it does. And they're really, really hoping t...
There's a pattern here, ever since Obama embarked on his trip abroad. McCain's team had nothing on Obama so they suddenly started to go after his basketball playing and exercise regimen. It's in , and it's appearing all over the wingnut blogs, with frequent references to the .
It certainly makes a big appearance in the and in an unintentionally hysterical twist, they attack Obama for "not visiting the troops" while showing video of Obama visiting the troops. Of course, it's video of the now i...
Good Gawd. I'd expect this kind of thing over at Ace of Spades or Allahpundit, but this is actually on the official McCain website.

Now, I don't know about you, but when I look at that photo, the last thing I think of is "Peace." It looks like a Successories poster, circa 1939.
I'll bet my boss has this framed and hanging in his office by Friday.

An editorial written by Republican presidential hopeful McCain has been rejected by the NEW YORK TIMES -- less than a week after the paper published an essay written by Obama, the DRUDGE REPORT has learned.
The paper's decision to refuse McCain's direct rebuttal to Obama's 'My Plan for Iraq' has ignited explosive charges of media bias in top Republican circles.
'It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama's piece,' NYT Op-Ed edito...
Hooray!!!! Happy news, oh how I wish I could be there!

FLINT, Mich. – Former Vice President Al Gore will appear in Detroit tonight for his debut campaign appearance with Senator Barack Obama, extending an endorsement and urging all Democrats to rally behind the party’s fall ticket.
“A few hours from now I will step on stage in Detroit, Michigan to announce my support for Senator Barack Obama,” Mr. Gore said in an e-mail sent to his supporters. “From now through Election Day, I intend...

You guys made the world proud tonight. The media kidz can't stop talking about how loud and boisterous and how freaking enormous that crowd was!!!!!

We were a part of history, and we'll always remember where we were and what we were doing the night Barack Black Eagle Obama won the 2008 Primaries. But you... you've got the best story.

Update: Andrea Mitchell reports as of 1:05 pm ET, Obama's Magic Number is now 30.5!
Today, sweet crude hit $135 a barrel.
Yesterday, I watched Sen. Jim Webb on "Morning Joe," as oil hit $130 a barrel, point out to Mika Brezinski that the month we invaded Iraq, oil was $27 a barrel. My jaw dropped.
Gasoline locally here in southwestern Ohio hit $3.99 today, and while that is awful and a hardship, can anyone really imagine what would happen if that price doubled? The closer we inch toward $200 a barrel, the closer we get to $8.00 per gallon of gas.
I think it's high time O...
Let's try this one more time, since it appears to be such a difficult concept in the here-and-now.
Hours after Senator Barack Obama of Illinois and former Senator John Edwards of North Carolina agreed to sign a loyalty pledge put forward by party officials in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York followed suit. The decision seemed to dash any hopes of Mrs. Clinton relying on a strong showing in Florida as a springboard to the nomination.

Brief background... I'm in Cincinnati, and we're right across the Ohio River from Kentucky. Parking is really cheap over there, and the bars are cheaper and more fun and smoky, so tonight I met a few friends in Northern Kentucky to toss back some pints and talk about politics.
The mood on Election Eve in the bar was electric. Everybody, absolutely everybody was talking politics. Bluegrass Country is very excited about tomorrow's election, and it was the topic of the day.
I'm a regular at th...
A big "up" to prodn2000 for inspiring this post, within another thread.
Sometimes it's a good idea to just take a pause, to collect your thoughts. What a whirlwind of an election, it has dominated our year. January seems like just seconds ago to me, doesn't it to all of us, this collection of political junkies and yellow dogs and activists and bleeding hearts that we call "DU"? So I got to thinking, thanks to prodn2000, when he wrote in response to me "Visualize January 2009."
Remember, mor...
Please, everyone, be gracious. This is one gorgeous family we're looking at.

Heading into Pennsylvania, four weeks from today, how will the Clinton strategy morph from the current ones on display:
The "Insult 40 States" Strategy Kos Klassic
The "Insult 40 Superdelegates" Strategy (Bill Richardson)
The "Annoy The Media With Hourly Hyperbolic Conference Calls" Strategy
The "Move The Goalposts With Increasing Fervor" Strategy Pennsylvania Counts
Any guesses? The funnier, the better... :-)
I dedicate this thread, and this beautiful night, to Andrew Goodman, James Chaney, and Michael Schwerner.

Thank you, FLDem5!
Forty-four years ago, these three college students were murdered in Philadelphia, Mississippi for attempting to register blacks to vote.
Today, all citizens of this state have the opportunity to vote, and tonight, for the first time in history, they can, should they choose, vote for a black candidate for President of the United States.
That's really all you nee...

Greetings and salutations to all of you have committed your time, your devotion, your money and your hearts to the most unique, most uplifting, most positive Democratic Campaign for President that most of us have ever seen... Obama For America.
After 11 straight wins and a huge lead in delegates, I know everyone is hoping we can keep this trend alive in Texas and Ohio. I know that our friends in Texas are working their butts off, and I can assure you that here in Ohio, we're doing the same.
