Dear Auntie Pinko, I know the state of our health care here in America is a mess. We have 40 million people uninsured—more or less. The cost of health care is skyrocketing. I have read heartbreaking stories of people going bankrupt trying to pay enormous medical bills. I keep saying that there must be a better way. To me universal health care is the answer but conservatives always scream that universal health care is "socialism" and that socialized medicine never works. I have heard right...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I am supporting a certain Democratic candidate for President in 2008, who I’m not going to name, because that’s not the point. What I want to know is, is there any possibility that the Democrats will win the election in 2008 and be able to put together an effective Administration, since the only Democrats running, including my candidate, have something seriously wrong with them? And the ones who haven’t declared but are likely to run all have something seriously wrong with ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I am struggling with the concept of "Supporting our Troops". Early in the Iraq war I felt strongly that we should support our young men and women who were being sent to war. Many of these young soldiers had signed up to serve and were now being asked by our government to fight in a war that was not necessarily of their choosing. It seemed important to separate out their decisions to serve our country with the decisions of our government to go to war. However, today as you...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Whenever the talking heads speak about withdrawing troops from Iraq, they say it would cause complete chaos. Says who? Are those the predictions of the "they'll greet us as liberators" guys? I think it might be that the violence will decrease as we leave. Is any think tank looking into a “Peace Now” option? I mean if the recent studies saying over 70% of the Iraqi people want us out, don't you think it's possible that if we got out the violence would begin to decrease? ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, During the last few years we have witnessed a backlash against the Muslim community that is unfair, yet understandable. Every day we are subjected to atrocities that Muslim extremists perform against the rest of the world, including their own people. I know the vast majority of Muslims in this world are not radical extremists, nor do they even support or agree with violence or terrorism. But I can also see that in this very human world, a pattern of violence perpetrated by...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I’m just so happy that the Democratic Party won so many House and Senate seats, it’s hard to think of anything but celebrating. Then I sign on to DU and I’m right back down in the dumps as I read all the threads bickering and arguing about whether or not impeaching Dubya should be the first priority, or whether Hillary Clinton should run for President, or whether smoking should be allowed in such-and-such a place, or what a putz this Democrat or that Democrat is because he o...

Ask a Liberal: Advice From Auntie Pinko Dear Auntie Pinko, The utter shamelessness of the corporate media is incredible. I go online and read newspapers and magazines from other countries, small and independent e-zines and paper periodicals that publish online and get a TOTALLY different view of the world. I think that one reason America has become dumb enough, collectively, to elect Geedub not once, but twice, is that we’ve had corporate pap shoved at us for so long. But I don’t remember ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I've thought long and hard about what might happen over the next two years if the Democrats win a majority in one or both houses next month and every scenario I can think of is sadly underwhelming. Above all else, the most important issue facing this country today is the war in Iraq. George W. Bush has basically stated that changing course will be up to the next president and Rahm Emanuel has so stacked the Democratic deck with hawks (so we won't look weak) that I don't exp...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I'm a little blue dot in a big red state and I keep hearing the Republicans trying to scare people with the idea of Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. I have spent the last few days asking the GOPers around me why that scares them and all I hear are generic Republican Talking Points. No one can give any specifics. I don't know much about Rep. Pelosi, but what I see I like. Can you help me develop some talking points for why Nancy is better than Denny? Madonna Dacula, ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I am a gay American and frustrated as hell! Of course I’m thrilled that the Bushpublicans’ karma is rising up to savage them, but why did it have to be at the expense of gay people? For centuries, homophobic assholes have been equating being gay with being corrupters of youth, pedophiles, ‘recruiters,’ etc. And we’ve only recently begun to take that stereotype apart. And now the whole Foley scandal is morphing from a focus on a member of Congress abusing parents’ and youn...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I used to be patriotic, now I’m not. What’s the point in caring about a country that just said it’s okay to torture people? When they added that to all the other horrible things that America has done in the last six years it was the last straw. The rest of the world thinks we’re shit and I’m starting to agree with them. The worst part about it was that people didn’t seem to notice or care that the Congress was talking about making torture okay, and when it did pass, again...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I watched a Democratic candidate for Congress get interviewed on television last night and although I agreed with him, I was very disappointed by the wishy-washy way he answered the hostile questions from the wingnut interviewer. I hate to say it, but it seems there is something to the righties’ contention that Democrats just don’t seem to have a message to get across, or a solution to offer to the problems of Iraq and the economy. The Dems I’ve heard take these things on ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Do animals have rights? Are they the same rights people have? If so, which animals have them? Monkeys, dogs, parrots, koi, earthworms, parameciums, bats, black widow spiders, cockroaches, or what? Is it legitimate to distinguish between which animals have rights based on how easily we can anthropomorphize them? Do animals have the right to turf us out of our homes if we suddenly discover that some rare species will only flourish in our subdivision? Do they have the righ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, It seems like everyone wanted to ignore Labor Day this year except stores running sales and candidates pimping Union votes. Almost nothing in the mass media and not even a nod from our distinguished Chimp-in-Chief, not that I expected anything from him. The Republicans have spent the last seventy years trying to roll back the gains labor made in the 20th Century and it looks like they are succeeding. I don’t see anyone in the Democratic Party exactly elbowing each other ou...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Why do people hate Wal-Mart so much? Yes, it would be better if they could pay people more and provide health insurance, but I think that in a lot of ways they make up for their sins by keeping their prices so low that people can afford to shop there even if they aren’t rich. I don’t know what I would do about school clothes for my kids if we didn’t have a Wal-Mart, and their groceries are always cheaper than the regular stores for real, name-brand items. Many families are...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Bush & Co. (“Thuggery on a Global Scale!”©) keeps telling us that “freeing people from oppressive dictators and helping them achieve democracy” (or something like that) is a Noble Cause, and therefore it’s okay to run our great-grandchildren into hideous debt, get a bunch of American service members killed, and shrug off the collateral damage in Iraqi civilian lives and civic infrastructure. After all, it’s ‘the right thing to do.’ Aside from the particular hypocrisy of pic...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Should I be amazed, amused, or intimidated by the Bush government's attempts to "keep us safe" from criminal terror attacks? And are they criminal attacks, or are they 'acts of war?' Who knows, anymore? Who is it safe to listen to? Who should I believe? Is anyone just reporting news anymore, without spinning it wildly in whatever political direction suits their convenience or plays to their constituency? Do terrorists really watch the US news carefully and time their attacks...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Where do liberals get off jumping on other liberals for not being liberal enough? I just traded in a big old gas-guzzler for a car that runs on ethanol, and was told that if I really wanted to do something to save the environment I’d be biking to work. Apparently (according to this oh-so-politically-correct environut) ethanol is ‘just as bad as’ gasoline because it takes as much oil, or produces as much carbon or something, to manufacture and distribute ethanol as it does t...

Dear Auntie Pinko, As a moderate who has been increasingly leaning liberal for the last couple years, I have a question about how I fit into the "big tent" of the Democratic Party. My friends and I represent what we think is a pretty significant portion of the population, we are 21-30, male, educated, socially liberal but moderately conservative on the fiscal side. In a debate with my friends and I, we were discussing how we want to vote for the Democratic Party, but do not want to be associa...

Dear Auntie Pinko, You have identified yourself as a religious person in the past, so I want to know how you think we should deal with the kind of nasty atheists who insult religion and religious people, calling God “invisible friend” and things like that? I am not a fundy and I hate what fundies are doing to real religion but it’s just as hard to have anything in common with the nasty atheists even though politically they have most of the same views I do. How can we work together when as soo...

Ask a Liberal: Advice From Auntie Pinko Dear Auntie Pinko, I am a conservative republican, but I am finding myself turning into a liberal... of sorts. The more I look at the issues that I used to be so steadfast in, the more some of the arguments on the opposite end of the aisle seem more convincing. I find myself shifting to the left on issues like energy, the environment, gay rights, and education, while my positions on other issues like National Security, abortion, and the second amendme...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Why does George W. Bush keep calling himself a “War President?” Aside from the fact that he really seems to like dressing up in war stuff, and saying things like “Bring it on” and “Dead or alive,” etc., that only serve to make you wonder how secure his manhood really is, does he really think America is at war? IS America at war? I know we’ve got soldiers dying every day because George likes the idea of guns shooting and people being scared of us, but is that ‘war?’ And wh...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Let's get directly to my question. How do you deal with wingnuts who say that the constitution does not protect free speech? I hear this argument at times: “The first amendment says, 'Congress shall make no law restricting the freedom of speech...' There! See?! It says Congress shall make no law. There's nothing that says the states or other entities can't restrict your speech.” I swore an oath to support the constitution when I joined the Marines. And I swore the same...

Dear Auntie Pinko, It always seems to come back to religion, doesn’t it? Now Barack Obama is telling the Democratic Party that we have to “reach out” to evangelical Christians and that kids don’t feel unduly oppressed by having to say “under God” in the Pledge of Allegiance. I used to be a religious person and I still believe in God but I’m starting to believe that religion has become too powerful in hate and division. I think the Founding Fathers were smart to forbid the establishment of a ...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I think I got a solution to getting a minimum wage increase for the nation's working poor-you want to hear it? What we should do is change the Constitution so that a Congressman's hourly wage can not exceed the hourly wage of his state. I know they don't get paid by the hour, but you can do the math. Let's say a 1st term Convict-I mean Congressman takes home 125K per year, and he's from Georgia, if the minimum wage there is $5.65 per hour, then that is all that congressman...

Dear Auntie Pinko, My 1991 Ford Taurus needs nearly $2,000 worth of work to keep running, and it has over two hundred thousand miles on the odometer. I’m finally facing the reality that I’ll have to invest in a new car. I hate the thought of contributing to the whole mess that the oil industry and the auto industry have gotten us into but there isn’t any way I can commute by public transport (there isn’t any,) the distance is too great to bike, and I frequently need to drive during the day to...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I’m depressed and discouraged that San Diego County Democrats couldn’t get a candidate elected to fill the seat of Duke “Show Me the Money” Cunningham. If we can’t even motivate enough voters to make an election un-stealable when we’ve got Randy’s French Commode to run against, how are we ever going to take control of Congress and impeach, try, convict and execute the traitors who have hijacked our country, killed hundreds of thousands of innocent Iraqi civilians, effectivel...

Hi Auntie Pinko! I am befuddled by a conundrum in conservative thinking. Stephen Colbert hinted at this situation in his comment at the Correspondents' Dinner concerning "the government that governs best is one that governs the least." As an ex-conservative, I can't reconcile how my former compatriots can repeatedly assert that government can't do anything right when it comes to such critical domestic issues as health care, environmental regulation, energy planning, public education, or other...

Dear Auntie Pinko, I have been trying to come up with a reason why a more concerted effort hasn't been made to impeach Bush. Although I believe he should be impeached, I think I might have found a reason not to impeach him. The problem is the domino affect. If Bush is impeached, and I do believe there is more than enough proof, then Cheney would also need to be impeached. I believe they both have committed the same crimes against the U.S. Rumsfeld is also just as guilty and should be remov...

Dear Auntie Pinko, Just recently the (still Republican-led) Senate declined to pre-empt states’ legislative powers regarding health insurance by defeating a bill offered by Senator Mike Enzi (R-HMO Execs’ Pockets). This is, if I recall correctly, only the latest attempt of many by the Bushies to keep states from kicking over the GOP corporate contributors’ butterchurns, like pre-empting states’ regulatory efforts on food safety for the benefit of ADM and other agribusiness cartels. Excuse me ...
