I mean seriously, what is this, 1977?
![]() Gay student gets hate mail for activismhttp://www.santacruzsentinel.com/archive/2... SANTA CRUZ — A Harbor High School student who protested rules that outlaw gay men from donating blood is receiving hate-filled and harassing mail at the school. Ronnie Childers, Harbor's senior class president, said Monday he's received about 50 letters attacking his sexuality since his complaints about national blood donor rules, and his photo, were published in a Sentinel story last month. The story later attracted state and national attention. <snip> The Red Cross and other blood-collection organizations have lobbied the FDA to relax the rules, which were established during the AIDS scare in the 1980s, but, so far, the FDA has resisted. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/conte... FDA to Review Ban on Gay Men Donating Blood By Rob Stein Washington Post Staff Writer Saturday, March 18, 2006; Page A06 The Food and Drug Administration is considering revising its policy that bars as a blood donor any man who has had sex with another man since 1977, officials said yesterday. The change in policy is being recommended by the American Red Cross, the American Association of Blood Banks and America's Blood Centers, which collect virtually all the blood used for transfusions nationwide. The FDA implemented the lifetime ban in the mid-1980s when concerns about the spread of the human immunodeficiency virus, which causes AIDS, were running high and many questions remained about the ease with which people could spread the virus and the reliability of screening methods. Since then, the accuracy of testing has improved substantially, as have questionnaires that all donors answer to identify those posing the greatest risk, Dodge said. Why?
Because Harold Ford Junior, an African American is running in Tennessee. Why couldn't the party find a moderate white candidate who has a better chance of winning? Before I was transferred back to California, I worked in East Tennessee for three years and I've gotta tell you, I saw my fair share of racists. I'm not sure Tennessee is quite ready for a black man holding a high office from that state. This is a risky move on behalf of the Democratic Party supporting this man. And God forbid Obama runs for president. You can kiss our chances in 2008 goodbye. Black people just need to calm down and wait for us to regain control of congress and the White House in 2008....then maybe we can start talking about having people of color in the senate or White House. I am thrilled that Harold Ford Jr. is running in Tennessee. We should have more African American people run for senate. But my sarcastic commentary is the exact same argument some people are making about why gay human rights, such as marriage and/or civil unions should be put on the back burner until after the election. You know as well as I do that if we regain congress, then it will be, yea, we don't wanna talk about gay stuff....we don't wanna rock the boat and lose control after we fought so hard to regain. Then before you know it, it's 2008....can't talk about it, too close to the presidential election....then it will be, no it's too close to the 2010 midterm, we can't talk about it now, then it's 2012.... Don't you see, IT NEVER FRICKEN ENDS. The civil rights heros from the 50's & 60's have to be turning over in their graves. I am opposed to the war in Iraq, but gay people should be allowed to join the armed forces.
Here's more information: An estimated 65,000 GLB soldiers currently serve in silence. An estimated 41,000 citizens would serve in the armed forces if they did not have to lie in order to do so. Over 10,000 soldiers have been discharged under DADT. Training replacements for those discharged, including more than 80 critical linguists, has cost the American taxpayers at least $364 million. Our nation's military is the largest employer of young adults. While Soulforce as an organization is against the war in Iraq, we remain committed to freeing LGBT people from political and religious oppression. Don't Ask, Don't Tell is rooted firmly in religion-based bigotry. We will fight this discrimination that makes second-class citizens of the LGBT community by showing the American people that this law is not a good compromise. http://www.soulforce.org/righttoserve

What's wrong with you, going on and on about allegations of human rights violations in other countries?
![]() There's no "allegation" in this situation of a human rights violation. There's proof . . . two boys hanging in the town square. It is absolutely, positively irrelevant whether Iran fabricated the rape charges. The bottom line is the leader of Iran has a lot of nerve to complain about human rights problems in the United States when his country is hanging children...for any reason. And you know what sadiesworld? You should be ashamed of yourself for not being more outraged about this horrific photograph. How sad.

There's a push right now to try to eliminate Don't Ask Don't Tell.
I don't understand the reason(s) for keeping qualified gay and lesbian people out. They're booting linguists who speak Arabic and Farsi - even though there's a tremendous need . Please try to help me understand. Cuz to me, there's no justification. Write a little something with your vote if you would. SUMMARY: A disabled Army veteran of the Iraq war runs for Congress in Illinois on a platform that includes rescinding "don't ask, don't tell."
"When I was serving in Iraq, it made no difference to me what the sexual orientation of my comrades was," Duckworth said. "Any qualified American who is willing to make that kind of sacrifice for our freedom should be free to do so." Former Army Maj. Tammy Duckworth, who lost both legs during the war, is running in the state's 6th Congressional District against Republican state Sen. Peter Roskam. The Military Readiness Enhancement Act, a bill that would repeal "don't ask, don't tell," is pending in the House of Representatives and is supported by 118 House members. http://news.yahoo.com/s/po/20060810/co_po/... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Good for her! I'm still burned up about the military kicking out this decorated army linguist who speaks Arabic! Just because he's gay! Outrageous. ![]() http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060728/ap_on_... disregard for human rights, that my blood is absolutely boiling right now.
Our government has once again placed bigotry ahead of national security. Someone should be arrested. Our country is less safe because the god*amn pentagon would rather have fewer people fight the true war on terror than having a bunch of good, decent, talented gays in the military. And Bill Clinton -- the same Bill Clinton who is my favorite president -- you ARE PLENTY TO BLAME for backing this Don't Ask Don't Tell nonsense. This has got to stop. It is one of the most outrageous motherfu**ing situations in this country today. I just can't tell you how much my blood is boiling right now. This will become my quest. And I need others to help me. We need to become a "Cindy Sheehan" of this cause. Throwing talented soldiers in the garbage because they're gay is immoral and it's reckless and it's criminal. I will be spending this weekend writing and faxing and e-mailing lawmakers, civil rights organizations and media outlets to get the ball rolling on this. How in the world can we let this stand? I am just beside myself. ![]() ========================================================== Army dismisses gay Arabic linguist JOHNSON CITY, Tenn. - A decorated sergeant and Arabic language specialist was dismissed from the U.S. Army under the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy, though he says he never told his superiors he was gay and his accuser was never identified. Bleu Copas, 30, told The Associated Press he is gay, but said he was "outed" by a stream of anonymous e-mails to his superiors in the 82nd Airborne Division at Fort Bragg, N.C. ...the GAO also noted that nearly 800 dismissed gay or lesbian service members had critical abilities, including 300 with important language skills. Fifty-five were proficient in Arabic, including Copas, a graduate of the Defense Language Institute in California. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060728/ap_on_... GAY ='s YOU'RE GARBAGE. WHAT A DESPICABLE CRIME. ![]() EDIT---------DELETE MY PROFANITY, EVEN THOUGH I SHOULD KEEP IT IN BECAUSE I'M THAT MAD. It seems like I was the only liberal who hadn't seen the documentary until I FINALLY watched it on the Sundance Channel last night.
OMFG, I got so angry half way through, I had to put it on pause and chill out for a half hour. Did anyone else feel as physically sick as I did afterwards? You must watch if you haven't seen it already. The shocking amount of blatant corruption associated with the Bush Crime Family is unparalleled. ![]() ![]() ************ The next showing: July 10 @ 10pm Other dates: http://www.sundancechannel.com/film/?ixFil... out you traitor -- The idiotic freepers were right, your name is "Loserman."

However, for the first time in seemingly ages, I feel like I'm out of the loop at DU as to why it's World War 3 around here regarding Leopold/Truth Out and today's ruling concerning Rove.
I am aware that Leopold reported Rove would be indicted and that obviously today, it turns out he is wrong. And....I understand why we're all angry and disappointed and frustrated about Fitz's ruling, however, why do some DUers want Leopold's blood because he got it wrong??? Sorry if I sound as though I've been living under a rock. I feel as though I'm the only one around here who doesn't get it. Maybe someone can help me understand. I dunno. ![]() WHAT'S HER NAME A "GIFT FROM THE GODS?"
Even though this strategy would focus more attention toward what's her name (allowing her to profit on no doubt more book sales which sucks).......taking a page out of Rove's playbook is worth it.
I think it's excellent strategy to FINALLY start turning things around on them. They lie and say we're soft on the war on terra and they lie and say we're going to raise taxes on working families, etc., etc. Attacking the 9/11 families is not only unpatriotic, it's anti-family values. I'd like to see the democrats come up with even more wedge issues because this is political war. The repukes shamelessly play the gay card every election cycle to rally the fundies. We need to start fighting back. And now. ![]()

WHY U.S. TROOPS ALLOW GAYS TO BE EXECUTED IN IRAQ
even hating gays, through don't ask don't tell.
Even though I think it's disgusting our soldiers are said to be letting this happen, I'm equally disgusted with the barbaric ways human beings are treated in the MIddle East. I'm talking about everything from hanging gay children in Iran to the way women are treated in general. Two gay Iranian teenagers -- one 18, the other believed to be 16 or 17, were executed for the "crime" of homosexuality, on July 19. The two youths -- identified only by their initials as M.A. and A.M., were hanged on July 19 in Edalat (Justice) Square in the city of Mashhad in north-eastern Iran, on the orders of Court No. 19. ![]()

into getting our hopes up that we can take back congress and ultimately, the presidency?
I mean, polls indeed indicate there appears to be considerable discontent on the right. But why do I keep thinking they're just bitching and moaning now, but when push comes to shove and they stare at that crooked Diebold computer screen in November, they're gunna vote GOP down the board like the robotic idiots that they are. I may be wrong. I think we have some nice momentum and there's no question some GOP candidates will be in for the fights of their lives. However, there's a part of me that is more than just a little bit concerned about another fundie dash for the polls. AND, we really haven't started seeing the full extent of the pre-election Swift Boat-type evil nastiness from Rove & Co. (with perhaps the exception of the usual gay marriage wedge issue crap). at the end of every speech???
![]() "Thank you - God bless you - and let's win this fight!" This is from Phil Angelides, the very liberal democrat running for Governor in California! I just noticed it on a transcript and it got me going again. If I did not believe in God, I know I wouldn't want to hear someone asking for God to bless me. I don't know why this bothers me so much except for the fact it sounds so friggen Republican. Are Democrats saying God Bless you because they're afraid they'll be open to criticism? I for one wish I didn't have to hear it so often....mainly because the GOP throws the God thing around all the time. And yea, I can't stand God Bless America either. What a terrible American I am ![]() |
