They're working with Wellstone Action to get the grassroots engaged. I fear I made myself so obnoxious that they probably regretted calling me about it.

First, the idea is good. They want us to start doorknocking and finding out what issues are important to people and try and get those people thinking about what's going on and get them out to vote. The idea is not necessarily to push a candidate or get people involved in the party. They really have their eye more on 2008 than 2006.

Her not-so-serene highness asked what good it will do to if we can't trust how the votes are counted or if, in the obvious face of election fraud the candidate and/or the party just roll over again. I mentione Robert Kennedy's article, Greg Palast and Mark Crispin Miller. There was some agreement about that among the assembled masses. I was told we were not there to discuss that.

Then, our moderator mentioned that, hard as it is to believe, some people see very little difference between the parties. The mouth that roared said that she can understand that and what good is it going to do us if we get these people fired up and then offer them nothing but Republican Lite candidates (As I was sitting next to a State Rep who is Republican lite I really took some sadistic glee in saying that). Again there was some agreement and again I was told we were not there to discuss that. Being on a roll, I asked how many people there had caucused, attended their Senate District convention and were involved with the party. (I would be the only one who could answer yes to all three questions). An attempt was made to shut me up, but I was hot and I said until we wrestle control of DFL back from the DNC and DLC we can knock on all the doors in the state and we'll gain nothing and we need to get more people, especially Liberals (yes, I used the L word) involved in the party and find more candidates like Wellstone so people have a real choice and I'm tired of the Democratic party running away from the New Deal and rarely taking a real position on anything. Well, they did manage to shut me down that time and I knew I was getting obnoxious so I pretty much kept my mouth shut after that.

I can't decide whether or not to stay involved with this group... They are planning to offer a free mini Camp Wellstone session later in the summer so I would like to go to that - but if we're not going to really organize and do something, I'm not so sure.

On the way out the door I had one woman stop me and tell me she really liked what I said about election fraud and she's been planning to get more involved with Common Cause because they're taking the issue on. She did say she was glad that we had paper ballots so that it can't happen here, so I was able to fill her in on some of the crap Kiffmeyer was trying to push to make it harder to vote and I told her about that mysterious 7,000 votes that first went to, then disappeared from, the Green candidate in the 6th District in 2004. She was amazed.

Another guy stopped and asked what I thought of Hatch and I said he's not as liberal as I like, but at least he's his own man and not a slave to either the party or corporations and we can be pretty sure no one will buy him. Then we got into a discussion of how much we dislike the DLC and if Wellstone were running for the first time this year, there is no way the powers that be would have let him get the endorsement.

I wish I had seen the post on the DU home page about Schumer saying the DSCC will support Lieberman even if he loses the primary (http://www.democraticunderground.com/discu... ) I could have used it to reinforce the need to take the party back.

Power to the People!
