I've been away from DU for a while, so I realize that this issue has somewhat lost its 1st place importance, but my mom just compiled this great list. She's been a prominent outspoken gay Californian who worked against Prop 8. Pass this on, and use it how you will. All I ask is if you like it, Rec it. But perhaps this will show SEPARATE BUT EQUAL is not truly equal. Rights of Marriage and Not Domestic Partnerships What are some of the differences between Civil Unions and Gay Marriage? ...

Note to people, I put this in GD because I figured it didn't fully relate to the economy itself, which is why I didn't post there. So let me just preface this by saying I'm going into my Senior year of high school and one of the AP classes I'll be taking is AP Microeconomics. Now, like any AP class, we're required to do some summer work as an intro to the class. In this case it was Naked Economics by Charles Wheelan. Now it may have helped me to research this man's credentials before I embar...

It is perfectly acceptable to love one's country and yet not be proud of it. Think of the things that have happened since Bush took office: * invaded two innocent countries, possibly three before he leaves office * taken away the civil liberties of all Americans * denied health care to over 40 million citizens * allowed the corporate takeover of America * allowed two of the worst natural disasters to devastate the South and Midwest with little aid * been given virtually total executive control ...

(Link)/ Execution of a Viet Cong Guerrilla This picture was shot by Eddie Adams who won the Pulitzer prize with it. The picture shows Nguyen Ngoc Loan, South Vietnam’s national police chief executing a prisoner who was said to be a Viet Cong captain. Once again the public opinion was turned against the war. (Image) By Eddie Adams The lynching of young blacks This is a famous picture, taken in 1930, showing the young black men accused of raping a Caucasian woman and killing her boyfriend,...

After having not posted for a long time (but still lurking) this has got to me to post again. As one of the few high schoolers who post here, I want to say, that I REALLY hope, that when I'm 20, Bush, or another family member, isn't in the official position of what was known as the presidency. This is just wrong. Ten years from now I don't want to have to watch what I say or do, and be arrested because of one small flick of the eye which indicated I was against the government. The more and m...

(Link) When McLean High School students write this year about Othello or immigration policy, their teachers won't be the only ones examining the papers. So will a California company that specializes in catching cheaters. The for-profit service known as Turnitin checks student work against a database of more than 22 million papers written by students around the world, as well as online sources and electronic archives of journals. School administrators said the service, which they will start usi...

Yes, you guys have failed us. Not really you, but the nation as a whole. I wouldn't necessarily call it a fear, but a terrifying future. Most of my friends either believe it not to exist, don't care, or don't know about it. There are the select few who know about it and, shall I say, are scared, or worried. But for the most part, teens don't care, or don't believe, or as I said, don't know. My 11 year old sister cares more than some of my friends. I think maybe getting the message to them...

Download it, it's free. And send the link to all of your Republican friends, to see if it will affect them. (Link) Anyway, it is a show in which people from a lifestyle go to a completely different one for #0 days, hence the title. In this episode, a hardcore Anti-Immigration Republican goes to a 1 bedroom apartment in which a family of & illegal immigrants, 5 children and 2 parents, live. After 30 days, he is changed to realize the hardhsips and why they cross the border. It truely is an...

Waiting On The World To Change - John Mayer Go here, and on the right side, listen to it, and follow along with the lyircs. It is pretty easy to sing, so even sing yourself!: (Link)/ Me and all my friends We're all misunderstood They say we stand for nothing and There's no way we ever could Now we see everything that's going wrong With the world and those who lead it We just feel like we don't have the means To rise above and beat it So we keep waiting Waiting on the world to change We keep ...

You see, this is the problem with minors and adults. Since minors have no strong voice in politics(except for some), the adults are able to change anything, and children can't do anything. The only way to block such a thing would be to have a dem vote no. Also, what is the difference between 16 and 18 other than 2 years? There is this stereotype that teens are bad drivers, cause more accidents and such, but that does not apply to ALL teens. Maybe you could raise it, but let the ones who get...

"I Have A Dream" by Martin Luther King, Jr, Delivered on the steps at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington D.C. on August 28, 1963. Source: Martin Luther King, Jr: The Peaceful Warrior, Pocket Books, NY 1968 Five score years ago, a great American, in whose symbolic shadow we stand signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree came as a great beacon light of hope to millions of Negro slaves who had been seared in the flames of withering injustice. It came as a joyous daybreak to end...

Data from 1,500 nuclear weapons employees compromised Around 1,500 workers for the nuclear-weapons unit of the Energy Department in Albuquerque, New Mexico have been left vulnerable after a hacker stole sensitive information. Today someone called me a Republican. Maybe they want me to fit into their own little world, or maybe they are just crazy, probably crazy. Anyway, I always thought I was a democrat. I just want some answer, am I really a Democrat? I am only 15, and still have a long way to go, but here are a few ideas I have. *Amnesty for MOST illegal immigrants(If they have children here, or if they have lived here for more than 6 months) *LGBT rights should exist, there should be no discrimination *We s...
