![]() "For those who are searching for meaning to the last eight years, a new book by American poet, George Witte, Deniability, is the place to start. This is not only for writing that is spectacular in its simplicity, its perfect placement of each word, its prose, but for its bravery in peeling back the layers of the war on terror as an eight year journey that is stark and unforgiving in its verse." http://op-ed.the-environmentalist.org/2009... Important new book. Please share. From The Environmentalist:
There has been a great deal of reporting, speculation, finger pointing and denials on the Mumbai attacks, much of which has focused on trees (dots) instead of forests. After reading with empathy and horror of the death and destruction, the question remained, who was behind this and why? snip The press has been referring to the Mumbai attacks as India's 9/11. Given the impact on India and the larger impact on both the global economy and the ongoing conflicts in South Asia, that seems an accurate assessment. http://world.the-environmentalist.org/2008... This article lists the different players and identifies, by name, the likeliest suspects. Here's the link. Posted by environmentalist in General Discussion: Presidential (Through Nov 2009)
Sun Sep 21st 2008, 06:02 PM From the THE ENVIRONMENTALIST, four scenarios of what 2010 will look like, depending upon who is elected (starts out a bit tongue in cheek, then gets serious. First scenario copied here, link here for the rest):
"It is 2010. President McCain has fired the head of the SEC, FEC, FCC, SIPC (note spelling)... and has formed the M.F.I. Commission to study the collapsed economy under Treasury Secretary Phil Gramm, while Saudi Arabia and Dubai (where Dick Cheney is living out his retirement) have matched China, India and Iraq in owning our over thirty-three trillion dollar national debt. We're in proxy wars with Russia and in a bomb, bomb, bomb war with Iran. Out-of-work parents say goodbye to their enlisted sons and daughters. President McCain adds more cars to the thirteen(?) he currently owns. Ditto on the houses. A safe education is available only for the home-schooled or vouchered. Health care becomes more out of reach to those who can't afford it. Drilling is everywhere but Anwr and, yet, oil is over $200 a barrel. Alternative fuels legislation receives lip-service but little effective support. There are no salmon. Tucker Bounds becomes Press Secretary. Doug Holtz-Eakin is the new CEO of Blackberry. Questions about policies are met with blame and obfuscation. Sound far-fetched? Perhaps. But what if it's not?" Link to the other three scenarios (one more about McCain, followed by Palin -- wait till you read that -- and then a presentation of Obama's policies). Source: The Environmentalist
The 2008 G8 Summit has ended with an agreement among the principals to endorse cutting greenhouse gas emissions fifty percent by 2050. Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, host of the meeting, added a request that countries reduce their mid-term greenhouse gas emissions prior to standards being set. Read more: http://politics.the-environmentalist.org/2... The agreement does not set specific numeric targets, a concession to George Bush who insisted that any agreement must include China and India, two countries that are not part of the eight in the G8. The article includes data from NASA's James Hansen on the current state of emissions. Cross posted from THE ENVIRONMENTALIST
We've reached the tipping point: On the eve the annual G8 Summit where NASA's Dr. James Hansen has announced that we've passed safe C02 levels (safe being maximum 350 ppm; we're now at 358 ppm), Hansen has penned a comprehensive letter (PDF) to Japanese Prime Minister Yasuo Fukuda, host of the G8 Summit, requesting his leadership in addressing his findings. From Dr. Hansen's letter (Reprinted by permission on THE ENVIRONMENTALIST) Dear Prime Minister (Yasuo Fukuda), Your leadership, and continued leadership by Japan, is needed on the matter of climate change, a matter with ramifications for life on our planet, including all species. Prospects for today’s children, and especially the world’s poor, hinge upon success in stabilizing climate. ~snip~ Japan has been a strong supporter of actions to mitigate dangerous climate change, including the Kyoto Protocol. It is not Japan’s fault that international action has failed so far to slow emission of dangerous gases. But as the host for the upcoming G8 meeting, you can initiate discussion of an approach that could meet the challenge humanity faces. The past approach, and extensions now under discussion, are fatally flawed and would doom our children and grandchildren to an increasingly impoverished life on a more desolate planet. Clear thinking and bold leadership of the international community are essential in the next 1-2 years to change the course of human history. 2008 has seen a record outbreak of tornadoes in the United States from California to the Midwest, from the South through the central plains, to the Appalachian states. In January, THE ENVIRONMENTALIST reported the University of East Anglia's prediction for a strong 2008 La Niña event. "The assessment for 2008 is that there will be a "strong La Niña" event in the Pacific, which will limit the warming trend for the year (whilst still being one of the warmest years)." The La Niña phenomenon is an upwelling of colder waters resulting in a change in ocean temperature that causes a shift in the jet stream, reducing corresponding climate temperature. While this NOAA study from October, 1999, still referenced on their site, which uses data from 1950 through 1996, concluded there was no tornadic connection to the El Niño/La Niña event, Joseph Schaefer, Director of the National Storm Center, seems to have revised that position, according to this February MSNBC report: Tornadoes do happen in February, but a study by Schaefer two years ago found that winter tornadoes in parts of the South occur more frequently and are stronger when there is a La Niña... Thu May 15th 2008, 12:52 PM A new contributing writer on THE ENVIRONMENTALIST, Cliff Schecter, the author of THE REAL McCAIN, has outlined, in his first post for us, the connections between three of McCain's top staffers and their paid lobbying efforts for the Burmese Junta, Saudi Arabia, various African dictatorships; a veritable 'Murderers Row'.
Here's an excerpt: A new website has been created by Campaign Money Watch to convince Senator McCain to fire three lobbyists working on his campaign that have ties to ruthless dictators. You may recall that over the past two days, two McCain aides have resigned because of their willingness to do public relations work for the Burmese Junta. It turns out that they have friends in low places, however. I contacted David Donnelly, Director of Campaign Money Watch, for a comment, and what he had to say explains what his group is trying to accomplish: "John McCain ought to immediately fire three lobbyists — Charlie Black, Tom Loeffler, and Peter Madaigan -- whose lobbying for brutal dictators and foreign governments is every bit as bad as the two lobbyists who left his campaign over the weekend. Frankly, McCain's campaign is turning out to be an effort of, by, and for these types of Washington influence peddlers. His credentials as a reformer are gone." Pretty strong words. Yet, if you read what these men have been up to, perhaps not strong enough... Tue May 06th 2008, 02:23 AM Recently, THE ENVIRONMENTALIST published an article entitled: "Hillary Clinton's 'Victory' in Pennsylvania: The Rush Limbaugh Effect" that was picked up by the Huffington Post and reprinted. The article discusses the potential impact on the primary numbers by those influenced to change their registration from Republican to Democrat, in order to vote for Hillary Clinton, as part of Limbaugh's "Operation Chaos."
Today, we were informed that Mr. Limbaugh had mentioned our magazine on his radio show. His comments and our response is here: http://op-ed.the-environmentalist.org/2008... Posted by environmentalist in General Discussion: Presidential (Through Nov 2009)

Senators Hillary Clinton and John McCain have challenged Senator Barack Obama over his refusal to support their proposal that would suspend the .18 Federal gas tax for three months this summer. ~snip~ The lone 'expert' in support of Senators Clinton and McCain in this scenario so far? Spokesman for the Clinton campaign and SHELL OIL LOBBYIST, Steve Elmendorf. Fri Apr 11th 2008, 04:47 PM Written by our managing editor at THE ENVIRONMENTALIST (excerpted by permission):
In her recent speech at the Conference on World Affairs, Rachel Maddow cited James Madison's warning about the unitary executive, the propensity of an unchecked executive branch to lean toward war, whereas the legislature would be more likely to debate the issue before moving toward conflict. Maddow's supposition, that the Bush administration's seeming incompetence, its torture memos, its rush to war, was by design -- Bush and Cheney's direct effort to shift power to the executive and, thereby, to shift the entire country to a more warlike stance -- does have historical precedence. I'm not referring to Madison, though he did warn of this, or Jefferson, who raised prescient concern about undue influence, but earlier in history to the systems that Madison and Jefferson used as the inspiration for their grand experiment: The Roman Republic of Caesar's time and the Greek democracy of Solon... It goes on to cite scary parallels between history and what Bush and McCain have been planning. Here's the link to the rest of the editorial. Cross-posted from THE ENVIRONMENTALIST
Scientists at the Carnegie Institution have just completed a study that has concluded the only way to stabilize the climate is to reduce carbon emissions to a near-zero level: In the study, to be published in Geophysical Research Letters, climate scientists Ken Caldeira and Damon Matthews used an Earth system model at the Carnegie Institution’s Department of Global Ecology to simulate the response of the Earth’s climate to different levels of carbon dioxide emission over the next 500 years. ~snip The scientists investigated how much climate changes as a result of each individual emission of carbon dioxide, and found that each increment of emission leads to another increment of warming.<...> With emissions set to zero in the simulations, the level of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere slowly fell as carbon “sinks” such as the oceans and land vegetation absorbed the gas. Surprisingly, however, the model predicted that global temperatures would remain high for at least 500 years after carbon dioxide emissions ceased. A study of NASA satellite data, overlaid with reported cancer statistics, has identified nighttime exposure to lighted areas as a risk factor for breast cancer: Women who live in neighborhoods with large amounts of nighttime illumination are more likely to get breast cancer than those who live in areas where nocturnal darkness prevails, according to an unusual study that overlaid satellite images of Earth onto cancer registries. "By no means are we saying that light at night is the only or the major risk factor for breast cancer," said Itai Kloog, of the University of Haifa, who led the new work. "But we found a clear and strong correlation that should be taken into consideration."
