I can't post this in GD, because there will be too many responses that will just piss me off. See, Poor Little Mikey Vick, ("PLMV") feels the victim because as a super rich elite NFL quarterback he started a dogfighting ring and folks don't like him simply because they don't understand poor folks. I've been saying it here for years, largely ignored. Finally, Yahoo (of all places) sets it straight after PMLV gives an idiotic interview to GQ. Enjoy. (Link) " are writing as if everyone feels...

Many LGBT youth can't picture what their lives might be like as openly gay adults. They can't imagine a future for themselves. So let's show them what our lives are like, let's show them what the future may hold in store for them. JOIN OUR MOVEMENT - TAKE THE PLEDGE: Everyone deserves to be respected for who they are. I pledge to spread this message to my friends, family and neighbors. I'll speak up against hate and intolerance whenever I see it, at school and at work. I'll provide hope for les...

Japan Abandons Antarctic Whale Hunt After Sea Shepherd Protests Feb. 18 (Bloomberg) -- Japan ended its annual whale hunt in Antarctica early following clashes between its fleet and protesters, Agriculture Minister Michihiko Kano said. The government made the decision “to secure the safety of ships and their crew,” Kano said in a press briefing on NHK Television. Tatsuya Nakaoku, an official at Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, said Sea Shepherd Conservation Society boats...

I've been pretty quiet down here recently, but thought folks that peruse our beloved Tofu Ghetto might like to know this. Once again, Sea Shepherd has risen to the task at hand. (Link) I'm trying really hard to quash my "Suck it, whalers!" annual response. Long live Sea Shepherd.

I make my own, sometimes using a base from a jar. I must tell of a new discovery. I picked up a couple jars of this sauce at the Whole Foods or whatever to use as a base. 99% organic, and not priced like it. I had to have a taste before I worked my flvegan marinara magic on the final concoction. Wow. This may be the perfect pre-made jar sauce in the world that's under 5 bucks a jar. It's from Organicville, the Tomato Basil version. It's just fantastic. Vegan, gluten free, yada yada yada...

The mysterious and elusive supply ship for the Japanese whaling fleet has been located. At 1420 hours on January 12 AEST, Sea Shepherd Conservation Society’s scout and interceptor vessel the Gojira found the Japanese refueling and supply ship. It is identified as the Panamanian registered Sun Laurel (IMO# 9405631), and it was found at 62 degrees 43 minutes south and 178 degrees 33 minutes west. Captain of the Gojira Canadian Lockhart MacLean radioed the Sun Laurel and asked if they were in the ...

I was fortunate enough to be a part of this, and got to add an entry to the record at sentencing. I have word that nothing I entered was published, so here you go... Tampa couple sentenced in dog-fighting case TAMPA - Maurice Bayless contended he wasn't engaged in dog fighting – he was simply domesticating the animals. A judge didn't believe him, sentencing Bayless today to 30 months in prison and 30 months of probation for his role in dog fighting. Bayless' girlfriend, Celena Brantley, was...

“What an awesome way to begin the New Year,” said captain of the Gojira Locky MacLean of Canada. “Our three vessels dancing dangerously through the ice packs locked in confrontation with the three harpoon ships of the Japanese whaling fleet. It was both deadly and beautiful. Deadly because of the ice and the hostility of the whalers and beautiful because of the ice, and the fact that these three killer ships are not killing whales while clashing with us.” The three Japanese harpoon vessels the ...

The Nisshun Maru left port roughly 12 days ago, a full 2-3 weeks later than usual. According to Greenpeace Japan, the rest of the fleet looks like about half of what it has been in recent years (not that they aren't sending boats that Greenpeace didn't see say from another port). It reasons to be true as there has been talk that a few of the ships have been sold or scrapped. It's a money issue. Such a shame those damn Sea Shepherds are ruining the whalers' fun. And as reported some time ago...

NEW PORT RICHEY, Florida -- A neo-Nazi in Pasco County has been found guilty on charges of first degree murder and attempted murder. Prosecutors say John Ditullio broke into a mobile home in 2006 and fatally stabbed 17-year-old Kristofer King because he was gay, and injured Patricia Wells because she was friends with a black man. Leaving the courthouse Wednesday night, King's mother told 10 News, "It was a long time coming." (Link) (Link) ***************************** Don't know if this is ...

Let me preface this with this fact: I don't watch food/cooking shows. Ever. Normally, it's a bunch of folks cramming garbage in their pie holes. If I had the choice, my cable provider wouldn't provide any channel that was all about food. Until tonight. Totally stumbled over it. On The Cooking Channel, a new show (first episode?) tonight. Called The Veg Edge. On the show, we meet veg*n chefs, customers, caterers...and lots of omnis enjoying good veg food. It's brilliant! Just watching...

Nothing is more important to U.S. Senate Republicans than extending the Bush-era tax cuts for the nation's wealthiest households. A day after senior congressional Republicans met with President Barack Obama about forging a way forward, Senate Republicans signed a letter vowing to block all other significant legislation until tax cuts are extended for all. That is irresponsible, and it confirms that their narrow interests are not in line with the concerns of most Americans. Obama and Senate Democ...

Gojira is a go. This is going to be one helluva season. I'm putting all my bets on Sea Shepherd. (Link) Don't fret, whaler supporters. The Japanese whalers will allegedly have armed (yes, armed) members of the Japanese Coast Guard on-board. Can you smell International Incident? Almost time to dance, whalekilling shitbags.

You likely heard about former ear-biter Mike Tyson going vegan here on DU: (Link) Now, he's reportedly considering opening up a vegan eatery... The former heavyweight champion has been quite vocal in his love for the vegan scene — saying that it has allowed him to slim down and gain energy. “It’s been eight months with this vegan stuff," Tyson told Details magazine back in July, "but I get these explosions of energy. I don’t know how long they last, but they’re like explosions. So powerfu...

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society will be returning to the Danish Protectorate of the Faeroe Islands in the summer of 2011 with a plan to stop the horrific slaughter of thousands of pilot whales. “What the Faeroese do is even more cruel than the slaughter of the dolphins in Taiji, Japan,” said Sea Shepherd Chief Executive Officer Steve Roest from the United Kingdom. “What Sea Shepherd began in Taiji led to the production of the Academy Award film The Cove. We need to put a similar spotlight on ...

Was the U.S. Navy Veterans Association, which operated as a tax-exempt charity from a Tampa duplex, really a front that siphoned cash donated by the public and pumped it into the campaigns of politicians? The evidence compiled by investigators fanning out across the country in search of the Navy Vets' fugitive founder, "Commander Bobby Thompson,'' suggests the answer is yes. In Ohio, the Attorney General's Office has uncovered a series of money orders sent to political campaigns from individua...

I happened to be in Whole Foods today and strolled past a freezer that's never been there before. Stocked with lotsa typical Thanksgiving veggie fare. Lo and behold, dozens...DOZENS of boxes of this delightful meal. I bought two. One to cook this weekend to eat for lunch at work, and one for Thanksgiving with mom. I couldn't find one to save my life last year. Oh happy day!

BRUSSELS — A European judge has refused to suspend a ban on the import of seal products in Europe, dealing a blow to Canada's Inuit hunters and fur traders, according to a ruling released on Thursday. The European Union's decision to ban such imports angered Canada and prompted a legal challenge by Inuit groups from Canada and Greenland. This new ruling by the European Court of Justice further "disappointed" both Canadian sealers and Ottawa. Judge Marc Jaeger rejected an argument made by the ...

Well, almost. Some articles are saying "mostly vegan" and some saying vegetarian with the here and there seafood dish. Former President Bill Clinton is embracing a vegetarian diet to aid in his battle against cholesterol, high blood pressure and the middle-age bulge. The popular former president has had heart trouble since 2004, but is now following a vegetarian diet with the occasional fish dish and has already lost 20lbs (9.1kg). In a recent interview with Yahoo! News and the Huffington Pos...

(WAVY) - An animal cruelty investigation has led to a federal investigation after Norfolk-based PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) revealed disturbing undercover video showing what appears to be extreme animal abuse. For nine months, a PETA investigator worked undercover inside the filthy, deafeningly loud kennels of Professional Laboratory and Research Services, Inc. (PLRS). Inconspicuously tucked away in rural North Carolina, PLRS takes money from huge pharmaceutical companies to test insecticides and other chemicals used in companion animal products. Bayer, Eli Lilly, Novartis, Schering-Plough (now Merck), Sergeant's, Wellmark, and Merial, the maker of Frontline flea and tick products, are some of the cor...

George Bush’s Niece: Vegetarian and Hunger Activist Model and designer Lauren Bush became a vegetarian at the age of four. (In an interview last year she said some of her veggie meals were veggie chili, pumpkin ravioli, and Brussel sprouts.) She isn’t interested in pursuing politics like her grandfather George H. W. Bush or her uncle George W. Bush, who have both been presidents. She chose to work on alleviating world hunger through a United Nations Food Program when she was in college. After ...
