The Humane Society of the United States transported approximately 100 dogs Monday afternoon who were rescued from a Tennessee puppy mill to its Gaithersburg, Md., office. The puppy mill housed more than 700 animals, making it the largest mill busted in Tenn. history. "This case is especially important because its effects will reach far beyond the 682 dogs who we removed from the puppy mill in Tennessee," said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. "By increasing public awareness of the...

Shame some folks see HSUS as a "welfare" organization with such disdain. Idiots that they are... **************************** It has been an especially busy year for the HSUS Emergency Services department. In fact, the department has been on 24 deployments in 2008—more than double last year at this time. The current deployment has been an example of the depth of HSUS talent. The team sent to handle Tennessee's largest puppy mill bust consisted of dozens of staff from numerous HSUS department...

By Robyn E. Blumner, Times Columnist In print: Sunday, June 15, 2008 During Hillary Clinton's gracious concession speech she mentioned that during the 40 years that she's been involved in politics and public life the country has voted 10 times for president, with a Democrat winning the seat only three times. "Just think how much more progress we could have made over the past 40 years," Clinton said, "if we had a Democratic president." From the perspective of protecting the environment, expand...

WASHINGTON (AP) — Rep. Dennis Kucinich, a former Democratic presidential contender, said Monday he wants the House to consider a resolution to impeach President Bush. Speaker Nancy Pelosi consistently has said impeachment was "off the table." Kucinich, D-Ohio, read his proposed impeachment language in a floor speech. He contended Bush deceived the nation and violated his oath of office in leading the country into the Iraq war. Kucinich introduced a resolution last year to impeach Vice Preside...

The European Union agreed on Thursday to take a unified stand against whaling in a statement issued just days before the International Whaling Commission (IWC) meeting this month. "With this decision the European Union can now take a strong role at the International Whaling Commission and use all its political, moral and economic weight to ensure a more effective protection of whales worldwide," said EU Environment Commissioner Stavros Dimas. The European Commission has been spearheading effor...

Well, kind of. Seems those pesky PETA kids have gotten through to KFC Canada. Here's more: For more than five years, PETA has been pressuring fast-food chain KFC to stop the worst abuses of chickens, like scalding birds to death, slitting their throats while they're still conscious, and drugging and breeding them to grow so large that they cripple beneath their own weight. Now PETA has scored a major victory and is ending its Kentucky Fried Cruelty boycott in Canada. The boycott will continue...

ALBANY — A 14-year-old boy walking home from school saved the life of a baby who had fallen under the front wheel of a stopped bus that was about to drive off, police said. Tyler Purvis-Mitchell, of 2 Sard Road, a sports-loving student at Albany Preparatory Charter School, was heading home around 2 p.m. Friday when he saw the 5-day-old baby fall out of his stroller. “He was under the wheel of the bus and it was getting ready to leave,” Purvis-Mitchell said Saturday. “I ran over and grabbed hi...

The Prevention of Farm Animal Cruelty Act on the November California Ballot By Wayne Pacelle President and Chief Executive Officer Humane Society of the United States Americans could barely believe their eyes when shown the sickening mistreatment of downer cows at a Southern California slaughter plant earlier this year. Alright, it WAS last week. Traditionally, the 3rd week in May is DBPW, and yeah, I missed posting about it. Big pitbull apologist flvegan missed posting about it. Fine, I'm a moron. Anyway, here are some good tips in regards to avoiding dogbites from that touchy-feely, everybody-loves-em ASPCA... _______________________________________________ Did you know that 50 percent of all children in the United States will be bitten by a dog before their 12th birthday? Dogs from Vick case get new leash on life Published on: 05/18/08 Makaveli is still so scared he trusts only his foster parents. Lucky 7, despite being covered in healed bite wounds, is a happy dog. And Charlie is fine, although when he came into rescue he was classified as being so withdrawn he might never be adoptable. The three were among the 47 dogs taken from Michael Vick's property about a year ago amid a dogfighting investigation. Vick ultimately pleaded guilty to a federal dogfightin...

You've GOT to see this. flvegan digs this. Rescue Ink You take a look at us, and maybe your first reaction is to cross to the other side of the street. Just remember to look both ways before you do. We're not a gang, vigilantes or a social organization, but we do have that certain "in your face" style when it comes to animal abusers. You may find us hanging out together at a hot rod show, tattoo parlors, or even hitting up the blacktop together on our bikes for a little road trip, but the m...

Memo to: Sen. Barack Obama Re: Blowing off 27 electoral votes Thanks for coming by next week for a three-day campaign swing, Senator. There has been lots of chatter about you ceding Florida to Sen. John McCain, given the way you've ignored the state for eight months and dismissed the 1.75-million Democrats who voted in our disputed Democratic primary. We're trying not to take it personally when you keep talking about the old electoral map — i.e., Pennsylvania, Ohio and US! — being so 2000/200...

Wednesday's vote was led by Mayor Richard M. Daley, who called the ban the silliest ordinance the council had ever passed. The repeal measure passed by a vote of 37-6 with no debate, an about-face from the original ban, which passed in April 2006 by a vote of 48-1. During Wednesday's vote, the ban's original sponsor, Alderman Joe Moore, shouted his objections. "It was a statement against animal cruelty, pure and simple," Moore said about his original intent, after Wednesday's vote. Of the cou...

Pretty impressive year. This week we released The HSUS Annual Report for 2007—a summary of the organization’s performance and effective action over the past year. I open the report with an overview of our forward movement, and I invite you to read that letter below. Then, browse the report and look back at what your individual investments and efforts yielded for animals—in the realm of public policy and enforcement, corporate reforms, public awareness and engagement, and direct care and animal ...

It is Mother's Day, and no matter what gift I buy nor card I send, it will never deliver the appropriate sentiment that I feel when I think of what my mother did, gave up, endured, etc to help me get where I am, where my brother is. I'm very lucky, and that's only because of the opportunities my mother gave me. That's it, that's all. Abe Lincoln did say it best, and it will never be improved upon: "All that I am or ever hope to be, I owe to my angel Mother." So...thanks, mom. I love you.

The shocking abuse of "downer" cows occurs not just at slaughter plants but may be an everyday happening at livestock auctions and stockyards around the country—the midpoints between farm and slaughter—as shown in an expanding undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States. "Downer" cows are those too frail to stand on their own—dragged and prodded with inhumane handling methods, and increasing the threat of carrying and passing disease. During April and May, HSUS investig...

"Last week, in a cynical and destructive maneuver, the Ohio-based U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance (USSA) targeted Meijer department stores for agreeing to donate up to $5,000 through a pet photo contest to a restricted fund administered by The HSUS to provide relief to pets abandoned during the foreclosure crisis. As you probably know, as people have had their homes foreclosed, we've seen a rash of animal abandonment cases, with dogs and cats even left in locked-up homes to languish and die. We've bee...

By Kevin Phillips, Harper's Magazine Published Friday, April 25, 2008 5:40 PM Ever since the 1960s, Washington has gulled its citizens and creditors by debasing official statistics, the vital instruments with which the vigor and muscle of the American economy are measured. The effect has been to create a false sense of economic achievement and rectitude, allowing us to maintain artificially low interest rates, massive government borrowing, and a dangerous reliance on mortgage and financial deb...
