The Obama Plan

http://www.barackobama.com/issues/healthca... /

Quality, Affordable Choices

If You Don’t Have Insurance, the Obama Plan:
Creates a new insurance marketplace — the Exchange — that allows people without insurance and small businesses to compare plans and buy insurance at competitive prices.
Provides new tax credits to help people buy insurance.
Provides small businesses tax credits and affordable options for covering employees.
Offers a public health insurance option to provide the uninsured and those who can’t find affordable coverage with a real choice.
Immediately offers new, low-cost coverage through a national “high risk” pool to protect people with preexisting conditions from financial ruin until the new Exchange is created.

" For some time I have been disturbed by the way the CIA has been diverted from it's original assignment. It has become an operational and at times a policy -making arm of the government...I never had any thought that when I set up the CIA that it would be injected into peacetime cloak- and - dagger operations. Some of the complications and embarrassment that I think we have experienced are in part attributable to the fact that this quiet intelligence arm of the President has been so removed from it's intended role that it is being interpreted as a symbol of sinister and mysterious foreign intrigue and a subject for cold war enemy propaganda."

" truman was disturbed by the events of the past ninety days , those ominous days of October, November, and december 1963. Men all over the world were disturbed by those events. Few men could have judged them with more wisdom than Harry S. Truman, for it was he who < in Late 1947 , had signed unto law the national Security Act. This Act, in addition to establishing the Department of Defense with a single Secretary at its head and with three equal and independent services- the Army, Navy and Air Force- also provided for a National Security Council and the Central Intelligence Agency."

THE CIA AND ITS ALLIES IN CONTROL OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE WORLD

I BELIEVE THIS IS WHAT COL WILKERSON IS DISCUSSING AS WELL..AND ALLEN DULLES........

AGAIN FROM "The Secret Team" By L. FLETCHER PROUTY

Eisenhower..and how he was fucked over by the CIA and Allen Dulles and the CIA and how he had to take responsibility when he was fucked over by the CIA and the shadow government or the Secret team..page 35:

" When President Eisenhower accepted the responsibility for the U-2 flights over the Soviet Union, no one would have questioned that he did this for correct and honorable reasons.National Aeronautics and Space Administrator (NASA) Keith Glenman had already made a public statement that the U-2 was operating out of Turkey as a NASA high-altitude, flight -research aircraft and had strayed over Russian territory inadvertently in high winds. Then Nikita Khrushchev produced the wreckage of the U-2 deep in Russia near Sverdlovsk, it made a mockery of the NASAcover story, and when he produced the pilot alive and well, it demolished the rest of the plausible disclaimer. The CIA was caught without a plausible cover story, and the President had to choose. He could either discredit Allen Dulles and the CIA for operating that clandestine flight and a long series of flights without his knowledge, or he could, as Eisenhower did stand up and take the blame himself on the basis that he knew of and had ordered the flights and was in complete control of everything done in the foriegn arena by this Government. The latter choice would mean that the President of the United States is Commander in Chief during peacetime clandestine operations as he is in time of war. This is a totally new doctrine born of the vicissitudes of the Cold War."

"many have considered this a very noble stand on the part of President Eisenhower, and it was. However, this public admission by the Chief of State that he directed clandestine operations within another state is exactly the type of thing that reduces the prestige and credibility of the United States in the family of nations to the condition described by Arnold Toynbee. Interference in the internal affairs of one nation by another is an unpardonable violation of International law and custom."

let us not forget, that Eisenhower was a GENERAL in a war.... Obama has not ever seen a uniform on his body.

If Eisenhower could be fucked by the CIA and the likes of Allen Dulles and the shadow government run under Dulles and the ilk like him....what makes you think the shadow government.. does not or could not.. have control of Obama..with little ,to no experience?

To equate him to Eisenhower is an utter joke!

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

this was posted before Obama Was elected President, here at Du , it was posted about Bush..and it is about Bush..but what is said here about Eisenhower, still stands..Obama does not know war, he can not understand war..he never even served in our military..he has never stood and watched another soldier die in war...please do not equate him to Eisenhower. That is an insult to every soldier who ever served this nation..Eisenhower warned about the Military Industrial Complex, because he experienced it first hand!

"He is the President who does not feel."

The Health Insurers Have Already Won
How UnitedHealth and rival carriers, maneuvering behind the scenes in Washington, shaped health-care reform for their own benefit

Snip:

In 2006, McGuire lost his job after getting caught up in the manipulation, or "backdating," of company stock options. UnitedHealth was forced to restate earnings over a 12-year period to reflect the extra compensation it had granted McGuire and other executives. McGuire's chief lieutenant, Stephen Hemsley, took over as CEO in December 2006. Two independent inquiries concluded that Hemsley wasn't involved with the backdating. Nevertheless he forfeited $190 million in past stock compensation and unrealized gains to resolve the matter.

Hemsley, a former chief financial officer of the now-defunct Arthur Andersen accounting firm, generally shuns the spotlight. But when health reform became a central issue in the runup to the last Presidential election, company executives say they realized UnitedHealth needed to go on the offensive. Hemsley met with White House officials on May 15 and May 22 to promote his company's prescription for cutting federal health spending.

In August 2007, the company hired Sommer, who previously headed global lobbying for Goldman Sachs (GS). He quickly built a new Washington team of former congressional aides and other K Street operatives. One key acquisition: Cory Alexander, former chief of staff for House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer (D-Md.), an influential moderate Democrat. Alexander had been lobbying for the huge mortgage financier Fannie Mae (FNM). Today, Sommer directs a team of nearly 50 people from UnitedHealth's spacious Washington office on Pennsylvania Avenue, equidistant between the Capitol and White House. The company spent more than $3.4 million on in-house and outside lobbying in the first half of 2009.

Sommer has retained such influential outsiders as Tom Daschle, the former Democratic Senate Leader who now works for the large law and lobbying firm Alston & Bird. Daschle, a liberal from South Dakota, dropped out of the running to be Obama's Secretary of Health & Human Services after disclosures that he failed to pay taxes on perks given to him by a private client. He advised UnitedHealth in 2007 and 2008 and resumed that role this year. Daschle personally advocates a government-run competitor to private insurers. But he sells his expertise to UnitedHealth, which opposes any such public insurance plan. Among the services Daschle offers are tips on the personalities and policy proclivities of members of Congress he has known for decades.

Making Public Option Less Robust Is A Double Slap In The Face To Working Class Americans
By: Jon Walker
Wednesday October 28, 2009 8:02 am

snip:

As I’ve pointed out countless times before, a robust public option would have premiums roughly 10%-11% less (according to the CBO and CMS) than typical private insurance. That would be around a $1,400 reduction in premiums for the average family that could choose the robust public option. Forcing Americans to pay roughly $1,400 more a year on health insurance premiums, by denying them the choice of a robust public option, is the first slap in the face.

The second big slap in the face is that robust public option would save the government $85 billion more than a weaker public option (with negotiated rates instead of those based on Medicare). Since Obama set an absurd $900 billion ceiling on the cost of health care reform, most of that $85 billion will need to be made up by reducing affordability tax credits to low- and middle-income families. As Ryan Grim at Huffington Post reports:

The public option tied to Medicare rates saves $110 billion over ten years. Requiring it to negotiate rates only saves $25 billion.

If leadership goes with the negotiated-rate plan, that $85 billion difference will have to come from somewhere to meet President Obama’s ten-year, $900 billion price ceiling. The fattest target is the subsidies to help people afford insurance.

Going with negotiated rates instead of a robust public option will deny American families a choice that would save them roughly $1,400 a year on their health care premiums. But making the public option less robust might also cause the government to reduce the amount of tax credits it can give to low-income and middle-income Americans to help them afford health insurance by roughly 20%. So, not only will American families be denied a much cheaper insurance option, but they will also be given less financial assistance to help them afford health insurance from a selection of more expensive options.

Making the public option less robust will end up costing working class families thousands more each year on health care. That is what the 47 Democrats who are “Nays” on the robust public option are desperately fighting for. They are fighting for a position that they know will make health care dramatically more expensive for millions of Americans.

India to ask US for more H-1B visas

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discu...
Thank you mule Train for this important thread!!

Source: The Economic Times

NEW DELHI: India is likely to ask the United States to raise the cap on visas for skilled workers at the bilateral trade forum meeting to be held in
New Delhi later this month, a government official told ET. India may also push for a special mechanism for Indian professionals travelling to the US for short-term assignments arising out of contractual obligations.

The issue of a more liberal and simple US visa regime for professionals will be high on India’s agenda at the bilateral meeting to be chaired by Indian commerce minister Anand Sharma and the US trade representative Ron Kirk, the official said.

H-1B visas, which are non-immigrant US visas for skilled professionals, given for up to six years, are highly popular with Indian IT companies such as Infosys, Wipro, TCS and Satyam, which usually corner a big chunk of such visas issued by the US. The subsidiaries of these companies in the US usually employ H-1B visa professionals to deliver services at customer’s location.

“The number of world-wide H-1B visas issued to professionals was reduced by more than half to 65,000 per year about two years back. This has affected the functioning of Indian companies in the US, especially ones in the IT sector,” the official said. He added that India was keen on taking up with the new US government the issue of a possible increase in the cap on such visas. Although, this year, the entire quota of 65,000 H-1B visas has not yet been utilised because of the on-going global economic slow down, the official pointed out that it was a temporary phase and the demand for US work visas would soar the moment the global economy began to look up.

lets learn a little about little Timmy Geithner...shall we...and for those who say we couldn't find someone better..i say read this and then tell me that again..i say hogwash!!!!!!!!!!!

Early career
Geithner worked for Kissinger Associates in Washington for three years and then joined the International Affairs division of the U.S. Treasury Department in 1988.

In March 2008, he arranged the rescue and sale of Bear Stearns;<10><19> in the same year, he played a pivotal role in both the decision to bail out AIG as well as the government decision not to save Lehman Brothers from bankruptcy, though claims were made after Geithner's nomination that distanced him from both AIG and Lehman Brothers.

Geithner;

His father, Peter F. Geithner, is the director of the Asia program at the Ford Foundation in New York. During the early 1980s, Peter Geithner oversaw the Ford Foundation's microfinance programs in Indonesia being developed by Ann Dunham, President Barack Obama's mother, and they met in person at least once.

National Security Advisor, Gen James L. Jones: Bilderberg Group, Trilateral Comm, CFR

Deputy National Security Advisor, Thomas Donilon: CFR

There are powers at work invested in marginalizing the truth tellers, they try to divide us and sub- divide us to take us into a financial Oligarchy..don't let them!

snip:
As Treasury Secretary, Summers led the Clinton Administration's opposition to tax cuts proposed by the Republican Congress in 1999. <10> Also during his stint in the Clinton Administration, Summers was successful in pushing for capital gains tax cuts. During the California energy crisis of 2000, then-Treasury Secretary Summers teamed with Alan Greenspan and Enron executive Kenneth Lay to lecture California Governor Gray Davis on the causes of the crisis, explaining that the problem was excessive government regulation.<11> Under the advice of Kenneth Lay, Summers urged Davis to relax California's environmental standards in order to reassure the markets.<12>

Summers hailed the Gramm-Leach-Bliley Act in 1999, which lifted more than six decades of restrictions against banks offering commercial banking, insurance, and investment services (by repealing key provisions in the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act): "Today Congress voted to update the rules that have governed financial services since the Great Depression and replace them with a system for the 21st century," Summers said.<13> "This historic legislation will better enable American companies to compete in the new economy."<13> Many critics, including President Barack Obama, have suggested the 2007 subprime mortgage financial crisis was caused by the partial repeal of the 1933 Glass-Steagall Act.<14>

snip:

National Economic Council
In 2009, he was tapped by President Obama to be the director of the White House National Economic Council<1><31>. He has emerged as a key economic decision-maker in the Obama administration, where he has attracted both praise and criticism. There has been friction between Summers and former Federal Reserve Chairman Paul Volcker, as Volcker has accused Summers of delaying the effort to organize a panel of outside economic advisers, and has cut Volcker out of White House meetings and has not shown interest in collaborating on policy solutions to the current economic crisis. <32> On the other hand, Obama himself was reportedly thrilled with the work Summers did in his first few weeks on the job. And Peter Orzag, andother top economic advisor, calls Summers "one of the world’s most brilliant economists." <33>

In January 2009, as the Obama Administration tried to pass an economic stimulus spending bill, Oregon Democratic Representative Peter DeFazio criticized Summers, saying that he thought that President Barack Obama is "ill-advised by Larry Summers. Larry Summers hates infrastructure." <34>. DeFazio, along with liberal economists including Paul Krugman and Joseph Stiglitz, has argued that more of the stimulus should be spent on infrastructure,<35> while Summers has supported tax cuts.

Summers has recently come under fire for accepting perks from Citigroup, including free rides on its corporate jet last summer.<36> According to the Wall Street Journal, Larry Summers called Chris Dodd asking him to remove caps on executive pay at firms which have received stimulus money, including Citigroup. <37>

On April 3, 2009 Summers came under renewed criticism after it was disclosed that he was paid millions of dollars the previous year by companies which he now has influence over as a public servant. He earned $5 million from the hedge fund D. E. Shaw, and collected $2.7 million in speaking fees from Wall Street companies that received government bailout money.<38>

How Washington Funded the Taliban
by Ted Galen Carpenter

http://www.cato.org/pub_display.php?pub_id...

This article appeared on cato.org on August 2, 2002.

The United States has made common cause with an assortment of dubious regimes around the world to wage the war on drugs. Perhaps the most shocking example was Washington's decision in May 2001 to financially reward Afghanistan's infamous Taliban government for its edict ordering a halt to the cultivation of opium poppies.

When the Taliban implemented a ban on opium cultivation in early 2001, U.S. officials were most complimentary. James P. Callahan, director of Asian Affairs for the State Department's Bureau of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs, uncritically relayed the alleged accounts of Afghan farmers that "the Taliban used a system of consensus-building" to develop and carry out the edict. That characterization was more than a little suspect because the Taliban was not known for pursuing consensus in other aspects of its rule. Columnist Robert Scheer was justifiably scathing in his criticism of the U.S. response. "That a totalitarian country can effectively crack down on its farmers is not surprising," Sheer noted, but he considered it "grotesque" for a U.S. official to describe the drug-crop crackdown in such benign terms.

Yet the Bush administration did more than praise the Taliban's proclaimed ban of opium cultivation. In mid-May, 2001, Secretary of State Colin Powell announced a $43 million grant to Afghanistan in addition to the humanitarian aid the United States had long been providing to agencies assisting Afghan refugees. Given Callahan's comment, there was little doubt that the new stipend was a reward for Kabul's anti-drug efforts. That $43 million grant needs to be placed in context. Afghanistan's estimated gross domestic product was a mere $2 billion. The equivalent financial impact on the U.S. economy would have required an infusion of $215 billion. In other words, $43 million was very serious money to Afghanistan's theocratic masters.

More by Ted Galen Carpenter

To make matters worse, U.S. officials were naive to take the Taliban edict at face value. The much-touted crackdown on opium poppy cultivation appears to have been little more than an illusion. Despite U.S. and UN reports that the Taliban had virtually wiped out the poppy crop in 2000-2001, authorities in neighboring Tajikistan reported that the amounts coming across the border were actually increasing. In reality, the Taliban gave its order to halt cultivation merely to drive up the price of opium the regime had already stockpiled.

search engine..it has been posted here over and over again..The Clinton Administration told the Bush Admin explicitly not to give the may Payment unless the Taliban turned over Bin Ladin..the Bush administration ignored the warning and the ban on that payment and made it anyway..because they wanted to run a oil pipeline through Afganistan..it was all done with your tax dollars for the greed of few.

this is just a little bit i have in my files..you can do some of your own research here on DU in the archives, i know for sure many of us posted alot about it all.

from my files:

If you go to the Binladin company’s website & click on Petroleum, Chemicals & Mining:
www.saudi-binladin-group.com/pcm.htm.

Under Saudi Binladin Group’s Joint Venture Partners click on H. C. Price Company.

Price Arabia Limited
H.C.Price has been a leader in heavy construction since its establishment in 1921. The company built its reputation as a constructor of cross-country pipelines, totalling over 3,600 miles and fibre optic cable networks, totalling nearly 3000 miles. Over the years, Price has proven to be particularly successful in the execution of large projects such as Trans- Alaska Pipeline, the Northern Border Pipeline and the Florida Gas pipeline project, the largest single U.S. pipeline project awarded since 1992. Its international projects include Tehran to Tabritz Oil Products Line & Port Terminal Facility in Iran and the C Field, Block 65 to Tobruk Crude Transport Line in Libya.
http://www.saudi-binladin-group.com/sbg52....

On Enron’s site we can see 2 of those pipelines are their projects.

http://www.enron.com/corp/investors/annual...

The Gas Pipeline Group

Enron's Gas Pipeline Group owns interests in four interstate pipelines, operates 32,000 miles of pipelines in 21 states and transports 15 percent of U.S. natural gas. Returns are strong and stable from the group, which produces consistent earnings and cash flow. In 1999 the group had income before interest and taxes (IBIT) of $380 million, or 19 percent of Enron's overall IBIT. Natural gas pipelines and their storage facilities are a key component of Enron's energy strategy.

Florida Gas Transmission
Florida Gas Transmission, the sole interstate natural gas pipeline serving peninsular Florida, is the fastest growing system in North America. With a surge in state population and demand for gas-fired electric generation, Florida Gas Transmission is working on two major expansions. Phase IV will consist of pipe and compression to extend its network to southwest Florida and add capacity of nearly 200 MMcf/d. This project is scheduled to be in service by mid-2001. The proposed Phase V expansion, once completed, will add approximately 400 MMcf/d of capacity and has an in-service date of 2002. The proposal was filed in December with FERC.
The 4,795-mile pipeline had average daily capacity of 1.5 Bcf in 1999.

Northern Border Pipeline
Northern Border Pipeline runs from the U.S./Canadian border in Montana to Illinois, transporting approximately 23 percent of all Canadian gas imports to the U.S. The pipeline measures 1,214 miles and averaged daily deliveries of 2.4 Bcf in 1999. The Chicago Project expansion was put in service at the end of 1998. By interconnecting with multiple pipeline systems, this link fundamentally changed North American markets by establishing a new relationship between Canadian and NYMEX gas prices. Northern Border has proposed a second expansion, Project 2000, to connect to Northern Indiana Public Service Company and its industrial customer base in the Midwest.

BACK TO H. C. PRICE COMPANY.

THE COMPANY IS NOW KNOWN AS BREDARO-SHAW AND IS A HALLIBURTON COMPANY.

Bredero Price's origins date back to the HC Price company, which has operated in the United States since the 1930s and was acquired by Dresser Industries Inc. in 1993.

In 1996, Dresser and Shaw Industries Ltd. of Canada merged the pipecoating businesses of Bredero Price and Shaw Pipe Protection to form the Bredero-Shaw Group, the world's largest pipecoating company.
Dresser was subsequently acquired by the Dallas-based Halliburton Co., giving Halliburton a 50 percent ownership stake in Bredero-Shaw.

http://www.al.com/news/mobile/Nov2000/15-a...

Bredero-Shaw comprises a group of pipe coating companies owned jointly by Halliburton Company of Dallas and ShawCor, Ltd. of Toronto. Both Halliburton and ShawCor specialize in products and services for the energy and resource industries. Through the years, the "Bredero-Shaw approach" has been to provide the highest quality pipe coating services to its customers. Today, companies in the Bredero-Shaw Group can be found throughout the United States, Canada and Internationally, serving the pipeline industry with corrosion coatings, weight coatings, insulation coatings and other related products and services. With 27 permanent plants located on 6 continents, Bredero-Shaw has grown to serve most world-wide markets. Today, Bredero-Shaw is the world's largest international applicator of pipeline coatings for the oil and gas industry, both onshore and offshore.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The White House acknowledged Friday that top Bush strategist Karl Rove participated in meetings on the administration's energy policy while he owned stock in energy companies such as Texas-based Enron Corp.

Is W concerned we might learn more about his father and others in The Family who are being recycled through the White House such as Ashcroft, Cheney and Rumsfeld?

Full disclosure of key operations such as October Surprise, Iran Contra and Mean, Arkansas would reveal much about The Family’s global drug and arms business and the massive financial fraud that has been perpetuated upon the American public.

W is still ignoring a demand from the General Accounting Office for the names of lobbyists and business executives the Bush administration met with in formulating its energy plan.
http://interactive.wsj.com/articles/SB9998...

xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

Besides making money for The Family, selling arms to Russia and China serves another purpose.
Their increased weapons capability will recreate “cold war” enemies.
This will engender an atmosphere of fear and crisis, which will give The Family a platform from which to further increase control, intimidation and manipulation.
This fearful atmosphere will also focus our attention on The Family leaders to “keep us safe”.
This not only maintains their control, but also offers many opportunities for them to implement more legislation and emergency Executive Orders for “our protection”.
These espionage, treason and security laws further erode our rights by transfering power from the people to the government.
http://lists.his.com/intelforum/msg05255.h...

So, madness it is, but it seems our “elected” Family, currently operating their business out of their new exclusive address, is trying to portray China and Russia as powerful enemies whilst courting them as business partners to sell weapons to that would then increase their threat to us.

Perhaps Cheney's concern is that it will become known that he is (was?) a major stockholder in Enron?

Or that Chinese-American Wendy L. Gramm is the Director for Enron Corp. She is also the wife of Phil Gramm (R.Texas).

It has been speculated in his former position as Chairman of the Senate Banking, Housing, & Urban Affairs Committee he had to cover up the her money laundering, bribery & blackmailing schemes in cooperation with the Federal Reserve & BCCI. This occurred in 1989 while she was regulating the Chicago markets as head of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission.

Part Two:

The Bank of England was also in on that one:
http://www.skolnicksreport.com/archives5.h...

Perhaps the concern is that this might start to unravel the whole Chinese Connection of Drugs & Arms business with the BushBoyz which is funneled through Chicago.

The drugs are called China White done in the British family tradition of the Opium Wars except this time the consumers are meant to be the American people.

See:

http://www.skolnicksreport.com/chinesesp3....

For a very interesting British/Bush Connection ask Mr. Skolnick for a copy of the Federal Reserve transfers (billions at a time) authorized by Alan Redspan that were sent to about 25 secret bank accounts in the name "Jorge" Bush. One account in Coutt's bank in England is shared with Queen Elizabeth.

So, what might happen if all of the above including the fact that the BushBoyz have been selling the Chinese arms for about 20 years were suddenly known?

Well, they'd have to pull out the Psyops manual to come up with a HUGE diversion.

This is a quaint British/American technique learned at TAVISTOCK INSTITUTE. This institution bears careful scrutiny for it it's warfare programs were cleverly turned to fashion the society of the 20th century.

Timothy Geithner, Secretary of Treasury..former Pres of the Federal Reserve Bank

Ambassador to UN Susan Rice..Trilateral Commission

National Security Advisor, Gen James L. Jones: Bilderberg Group, Trilateral Comm, CFR

Deputy National Security Advisor, Thomas Donilon: CFR

Special State Dept Speical Envoy, Henry Kissinger: Bilderberg Group, Trilateral Commission, CFR

Chairman of Economic Recovery Committee, Paul Volcker: Bilderberg Group , Trilateral Comm., CFR

Larry Summers:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Summ ...

MSNBC Countdown w/ KEITH OLBERMANN - Oct. 5, 2009: Dr. Paul Hochfeld of Mad As Hell Doctors interviewed.

OLBERMANN: About the phalanx of physicians, I'm joined now by Dr. Paul Hochfeld, an emergency medical physician from Corvalis in Oregon and a member of Mad As Hell Doctors. His organization was not invited to the event today at the White House, but Dr. Hochfeld believed his group should be represented, so he showed up anyway and was able to talk himself inside.

First of all, what exactly is or are Mad As Hell Doctors mad about?

HOCHFELD: Well, we're some Oregon doctors, members of PNHP who are dismayed and distressed at the health care debate that WASN'T going on in Washington. There was a debate between a failed individual mandate with or without a wounded public plan.

But what I'm really mad about, and what we're mostly mad about, is not health care. What we're mad about is that our legislatures were really complicit with the industry, the insurance industry, in manipulating public policy so that it is more about profits than public good. And that's what we're seeing with this health care bill that's coming out of Congress right now, or appears at least to be making it to the floor of Congress. It's this individual mandate, and it really is incremental change that isn't going to shift the power of the industry in this sick care non-system we've got.

OLBERMANN: This issue of the public option and the idea that it might get in name only or in watered-down form, let alone the idea that the single-payer went out the window months ago before even the debate started or the compromising started. How do you feel about the status of the public option?

HOCFELD: Well, if we had a REAL public option that really competed on a level playing field, it may be a way to move toward having a real health care system. I would call it not watered-down. I would call it wounded.

The public-plan option that we're going to get from this Congress, since it's basically written by the industry using our legislators, is designed to fail. It's designed to attract the sickest, most expensive patients, and that's called adverse selection. And adverse selection is the death knell to any insurance company and the public plan is just another insurance company.

So, after it comes online in 2013 and it starts to fail in 2016, at which point we're spending, what? 20 percent of our GNP on health care? The industry is gonna look at this designed-to-fail public policy and say 'See? the government can't do health care!' And it will just be the wrong lesson. The government CAN do health care. Just look at the VA. They've got excellent results, great patient satisfaction, very cost effective. Now, is it adequately funded? No, but it produces a tremendous amount of health for the amount of money they're spending, and that's the whole point.

We need to have a health care system that's designed and operated to get the most health for our health care dollars. Right now we're wasting 20 percent of all dollars servicing an industry that adds nothing to the quality of the product, which is supposed to be health.

President Obama himself said ... on national television, if you want true universal access, you're going to have to have single payer, and I think that's true. The only way we're ever going to have true universal access, which is a moral imperative, is to get some savings in the system, 20 percent right off the top, and now we can cover everybody.

And now we'll have a system so we can deal with all of the other drivers on cost, which include some of the physician behaviors, because of the perverse incentives that encourage us to do more and more and more and more.

OLBERMANN: Last point. We know the doctors were not there, the ones on camera there were basically not speaking on camera - they were, more or less, props for that imagery from the Rose Garden this morning - were any of you or were you collectively able to talk to the President about this?

HOCHFELD: None of us talked to the President, as near as I can tell, but I talked to as many of those physicians as I possibly could, and ... virtually everybody, the vast majority of the physicians that I spoke to, and I must have talked to at least a couple of dozen of them, want what I want, and understand what I understand, which is that our health care system is profoundly broken, that we're wasting a tremendous amount of money servicing the insurance industry, and that single-payer is actually the best solution to this problem.

The difference between them and me is they think we're only going to get incremental change from this Congress, and I don't think incremental change is going to change the balance of power. I think we need real change and I think this is the civil rights issue of our generation and we need to start every discussion with 'access to appropriate health care is a human right.'
