"Árpád Pusztai and Ignacio Chapela have two things in common. They are distinguished scientists and their careers are in ruins. Both scientists choose to look at the phenomenon of genetic engineering. Both made important discoveries. Both of them are suffering the fate of those who criticise the powerful vested interests that now dominate big business and scientific research. Statements made by scientists themselves prove that 95% of the research in the area of genetic engineering is paid by the industry. Only 5% of the research is independent. The big danger for freedom of science and our democracy is evident. Can the public – we all – still trust our scientists?"

Jesse is right! "You control our world. You’ve poisoned the air we breathe, contaminated the water we drink, and copyrighted the food we eat. We fight in your wars, die for your causes, and sacrifice our freedoms to protect you. You’ve liquidated our savings, destroyed our middle class, and used our tax dollars to bailout your unending greed. We are slaves to your corporations, zombies to your airwaves, servants to your decadence. You’ve stolen our elections, assassinated our leaders, and abolished our basic rights as human beings. You own our property, shipped away our jobs, and shredded our unions. You’ve profited off of disaster, destabilized our currencies, and raised our cost of living. You’ve monopolized our freedom, stripped away our education, and have almost extinguished our flame. We are hit… we are bleeding… but we ain’t got time to bleed. We will bring the giants to their knees and you will witness our revolution!"

GE: 7,000 tax returns, $0 U.S. tax bill
NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- General Electric filed more than 7,000 income tax returns in hundreds of global jurisdictions last year, but when push came to shove, the company owed the U.S. government a whopping bill of $0.

GE had plenty of earnings last year -- just not in the United States. For tax purposes, the company's U.S. operations lost $408 million, while its international businesses netted a $10.8 billion profit.

That left GE (GE, Fortune 500) with no U.S. profit left for Uncle Sam to tax. Corporations typically face a 35% federal income tax on their earnings. Thanks to its deductions and adjustments, GE reported an actual U.S. federal income tax rate of negative 10.5%. It got to add a "tax benefit" of $1.1 billion back into its reported earnings.

"This is the first time in at least decades that GE has reported negative U.S. pretax income and it reflects the worst economy since the Great Depression," Anne Eisele, GE's director of financial communications, said via e-mail

same ole privatize the profits and socialize the loses..this IS class warfare! We need to *CHANGE*...CHANGE the system! Got CHANGE? NOTHING has CHANGED in four years.

Leuren Moret is a Nuclear Power whistleblower who is telling all who will listen about the dangers of Nuclear Power. Like playing with fire... mankind has not learned as can be seen in the engineering mistakes made in building the Fukushima Plant in Japan. Nuclear radiation is very dangerous and we will be stuck with the consequences for a long time to come. There are certain measures you can take to protect yourself. Listen as she explains.

CHECK THIS OUT!: Hedge Funds Pluck Money From Air in $19 Billion Weather Gamble
http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=new...

Aug. 1 (Bloomberg) -- Credit Suisse Group trader Patrick Ayash rarely reads earnings estimates and just skims news about inflation. One thing he never misses: the daily weather report.

Ayash, 31, is part of an army of mathematicians, hedge-fund whizzes and programmers pouring into the $19 billion market for weather futures, financial instruments tied to everything from storms over Kansas, an early frost in the Netherlands, or a frigid spring in New York.

The market was once a sideline for utilities looking to insure against swings in demand for natural gas or electricity. Now, with hedge funds increasingly hungry for market-beating returns, more are gambling on untested strategies. Tudor Investment Corp., D.E. Shaw & Co. and other funds are turning teams of statisticians loose to devise novel ways of exploiting weather fluctuations.

things just keep getting better...

Democracy NOW! - DN! 1/3 An explosive investigative series published in the Washington Post today begins, "The top-secret world the government created in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, has become so large, so unwieldy and so secretive that no one knows how much money it costs, how many people it employs, how many programs exist within it or exactly how many agencies do the same work." Among the findings: An estimated 854,000 people hold top-secret security clearances. More than 1,200 government organizations and nearly 2,000 private companies work on programs related to counterterrorism, homeland security and intelligence in 10,000 locations. We speak with one of the co-authors of the series, Bill Arkin. Europe to buy Africa’s sun

Building a supergrid for Europe:
Currently, Europe is connected to Africa only through a 400kV AC link installed across the Mediterranean, under the Strait of Gibraltar, with a capacity of 1,400 megawatts (MW). France’s transmission system operator RTE, a Transgreen partner, estimated installing a higher-power DC connection there could cost at least €1bn (£847m) for every gigawatt of capacity. The cost of installing new connections from Tunisia to Sicily and Libya to Malta will likely be higher.

Libya's Qaddafi taps 'fossil water' to irrigate desert farms. (must read)
<snip>
While many countries in the Middle East and North Africa bicker over water rights, Libya has tapped into an aquifer of 'fossil water' to change its topography – turning sand into soil. The 26-year, $20 billion project is nearly finished.

Tripoli, Libya
In the middle of the Libyan Desert’s scorched yellow sands, rows of green grapes dangle off vines; almond trees blossom in neat lines, and pear tree orchards stretch into the distance.
In the Middle East and North Africa, the quest to turn thousands of miles of desert into arable land has taken a backseat to containing an impending water shortage. While many countries in the region bicker over water rights, Libya has taken it upon itself to change its topography – turning sand into soil.

are we getting the picture yet?

President Eisenhower warned of the military-industrial complex and its potential to take over the country. We're ignoring his warnings.(because Obama would nevah nevah betray us) Congress won't let us close military bases to save money.(They are going to take it from the already poor) Even worse..Congress is spending trillions of dollars on weapons systems! For what? WHO is threatening us? We have bases in over 100 countries. This president just started a war in Libya! He built two new bases in Honduras! Go look at his signing statements...I did. Most have to do with the military.

To encourage healthful eating, Chicago school doesn't allow kids to bring lunches or certain snacks from home — and some parents, and many students, aren't fans of the policy
3:42 a.m. CDT, April 11, 2011

<snip>
Fernando Dominguez cut the figure of a young revolutionary leader during a recent lunch period at his elementary school.

"Who thinks the lunch is not good enough?" the seventh-grader shouted to his lunch mates in Spanish and English.

Dozens of hands flew in the air and fellow students shouted along: "We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch! We should bring our own lunch!"

Fernando waved his hand over the crowd and asked a visiting reporter: "Do you see the situation?"

A Little Village Academy student cringes at an enchilada dish served at his school. Many students throw away their entrees uneaten and say they would rather bring food from home. The school, though, does not allow students to bring in their own lunches, unless they have a medical condition or a food allergy. (Monica Eng, Chicago Tribune / February 17, 2011)
