Rick Perry's immigration record includes the following tidbits that neither his supporters nor detractors are aware of, for the most part:
Children of illegal immigrants have been able to receive in-state tuition at Texas universities, thanks to a law supported by Perry. As the governor proudly said, "Educacion es el futuro, y si se puede."
Perry called for new investment in infrastructure and an easing of restrictions on border traffic to further deepen ties with Mexico.
While many conservative...
More than 11 million people in the Horn of Africa require food assistance due to the region's worst drought in half a century, the United Nations says. - Source:
Eleven million. That's as if every man, woman, and child in the state of Ohio were in danger of starving. Or, put another way, the entire population of New York City and Chicago combined.

The UN says that famine exists in two regions of southern Somalia, southern Bakool and Lower Shabelle. Across the country, nearly half o...
Surprising ally in the fight against Georgia's draconian anti-immigrant law. Republican mayor of Uvalda, Ga., says: "When I became mayor, I decided I was going to be the mayor for everybody, including people who have no voice otherwise."
Uvalda, Georgia (CNN) -- Paul Bridges leans toward his desk, picks up the phone and punches in a number with the fast, laser focus of a man on a mission. The mayor of this tiny town in South Georgia is ready for battle -- and looking for a new weapon.

The guy is riding his bike in the bike lane unless there are obstructions, as he points out in the video.
If there is, for example, a truck parked in the bike lane, his choices are:
Merge carefully into the road -- which is entirely legal -- until it's safe to go back into the bike lane.
Wait politely behind the truck while 75 cars, trucks, motorcycles, and buses go past until the road is clear as far as the eye can see, then ride in the road for 20 feet.
Ride on the sidewalk for 20 feet, then ...

So you’ve successfully reduced your car usage, and now you have this hunk of metal sitting around outside your house, like a garden gnome that needs annual emissions inspections. Why not share it, and maybe make some money? Car-sharing service Getaround has unveiled a kit that will allow people to offer their cars for short-term rental to friends and neighbors.
The kit is an easy-to-install GPS/WiFi/keyless entry doohickey that, along with Getaround’s iPhone app, makes it simple to arrange rese...

All free speech is converging on the Internet. Can speech still be called 'free' if access to it is controlled by a profiteering few?
The New Year is upon us, and I still can't stop running dystopian Net neutrality scenarios through my head. Maybe that's because -- in the wake of the FCC's sorry compromise, ironically named the -- I keep encountering confused, misinformed coverage of the issue. You can see the effects in polls like this one from Rasmussen. But don't blame th...

...To get to the Cordoba Centre from Ground Zero, you'd have to walk in the opposite direction for two blocks, before turning a corner and walking a bit more. The journey should take roughly two minutes, or possibly slightly longer if you're heading an angry mob who can't hear your directions over the sound of their own enraged bellowing.
Perhaps spatial reality functions differently on the other side of the Atlantic, but h...

This is what I thought of, too. All the poor terrified guys who got questioned when that asshole killed his wife in Boston and claimed a black dude did it. All the guys who saw their lives flashing before their eyes when that nutcase woman drowned her kids in the car and claimed a black man did it. All the people whose lives were diminished by the Willie Horton ad. All the family trees that should be fl...

She pointed out a couple of key facts:
ACORN, like anyone else collecting voter registrations, is legally obligated to turn in every application they collect, whether it has a real voter's name on it or Mickey Mouse.
ACORN has a team of people that try 5 times to verify every new registration.
Every time they can't verify a registration, ACORN flags it and turns it in to the local government elections agency with a group of other flagged registrations.
ACORN reports workers who've collected fak...

it's hard to pick the worst disaster. But W's Iraq is certainly a strong contender.
Particularly apt is Albright's assertion that this war has undermined our moral authority. Sure, Vietnam gave the world the spectacle of the My Lai massacre and other similar crimes. The fire-bombing of Dresden in WWII and the devastating use of WMDs against the Japanese didn't do a lot for our moral authority, either. Nor did the rape of the Philippines, as noted so eloquently by Mark Twain. Just to name a few....

2004 Georgia District 4 Democratic Primary Results
Cynthia McKinney - 51 percent
Liane Levetan - 20 percent
Cathy Woolard - 19 percent
Three other minor candidates - 9 percent
Now, just who are these candidates McKinney walloped in the 2004 Dem primary?Levetan is a longtime figure in DeKalb County politics and very popular former chair of the county commission. An Austrian-Jewish emigre, Levetan enjoyed huge support among the sizeable Jewish community cente...

So Georgia officials plan to TEST a new Diebold system equipped with a printer on ELECTION DAY this November. Oh, great--help is on the way!!
In fact, the state will be testing one type of printer on the day of the General Election, November 7, 2006. Voters in three precincts, one each in Camden, Bibb and Cobb Counties, will use Diebold AccuVote TSx machines, similar to the touch-screen machines they’re used to using, but equipped with printers to provide a “voter verified paper audit trail,” or...

There are many who came here as young children, have lived their whole lives here, and in some cases don't even know ICE is looking for them until they go in and try to do the "right" thing and register to become U.S. citizens. For example:
Today, we look at the issue of immigration detention with a number of guests. We will look at the treatment of immigrant detainees, the trend towards privatization of detention centers and t...

I read the phrase "net-metering cap" in this article and didn't know what it meant, so I looked it up. According to , net metering is what allows you to "sell" excess power back to the power company. Actually, it's more like getting a credit.
For example, if your solar cells generate more power during the day than you use, your electric meter runs backwards, giving you a credit. Then at night, when you're using electricity but not generating your own power, the meter runs in the normal directio...

I just heard today that he'd died. (I'm obviously working too much!) "Fresh Air" with Terry Gross played her interview with him in 2001, when he was named an NEA Jazz Master. What a wonderful guy, and it was so interesting to hear him talk about his early days with Miles, Bird, Bud, and Art Blakey, and a little bit of what he knew about the craft and art of music.
I had the pleasure of seeing him perform only twice, although I've listened to many of his recordings. Once was at that fabulous sub...

Zoot Sims was (is still, I guess) Bill Clinton's favorite saxophonist. This 1975 small-group recording with Basie on piano and organ, Louie Bellson on drums, and John Heard on bass is a pure delight. Zoot burns white-hot with his unique sound (founded on Lester Young and Coleman Hawkins), and Basie is perfect as always, playing way much more piano than you typically hear from him. Wow!
This is the only time I've heard Sims and Basie together, and boy is it a treat! Several of the tunes are hard...

And that's the one and only reference to 9/11 in my post. But, whatever, I'll respond to your post anyway.
Where in the truthout article is McKinney quoted as saying that Bush a) knew about the 9/11 attacks ahead of time and let them happen on purpose or b) made them happen on purpose? These are the claims that the AJC and in the media have made, but there is no basis for them. That was my point, and you have not successfully refuted it.
But let's not focus on our differences. There is much f...

I live in the ATL area and am a strong supporter of Cynthia McKinney. It's true that her style is blunt--even abrasive at times--and she's been known to make confrontational statements. These are qualities that are generally admired in male politicians, especially if they're white.
But there's more to the McKinney story. To understand her and her position in Atlanta-area politics, you have to go back to her father's career. Few are aware (or remember) the history of Billy McKinney (pharmacist a...

I've been thinking about this, and finally realized (I'm no genius when it comes to statistics) that some centrist Dems figure it's better to take one vote away from the Repukes while adding one to the Dem column, than to woo one Dem non-voter (or Green voter, e.g.). It's a net gain of two as opposed to one. So they'd rather go the Republican Lite route, thinking it's a better way to bolster their chances.
I have a couple of problems with this. First of all, of course, it's dishonest to turn yo...
