I have an aunt, widowed without any children, who suffered from an AVM in December, approximately the same time as Senator Johnson. She is currently residing in a "nursing home" in Kansas. She is on no IVs, no tubes, ventilators, etc. She is ambulatory without any paralysis, but has a slight speech impediment as a result of the incident. She takes one medication per day, a pill for hypertension. Her care is currently costing $6,500 a month. Our family is in the process of selling her small home (half of a duplex), hoping that the money from that will support her care for approximately a year, at which time Medicaid will take over. I shudder to think what our family will do if Medicaid fails to pick this up.
