Birdflu: end travel to both north and south america from the outside: use our natural ocean barriers

AS THE PANDEMIC RAVAGES THE REST OF THE WORLD....

NOT ONE PERSON GETS SICK IN NORTH OR SOUTH AMERICA

...NOT ONE !

Use National Security Agency's infrared {IR} satellites to spot the "heat signature" of any plane or boat engine that tries to get through.

Use our two oceans as barriers to the birdflu... very, very few would try to cross on their own, so this barrier would be easier to perfect than fences at the Mexican and Canadian borders.

WHY THE OCEANS ARE EASIER TO SEAL THAN OUR LAND BORDERS
There's nowhere to hide on an ocean. It also takes longer to cross an ocean than to walk across our land borders. Many can attempt to walk over the land borders, but very few are rich enough to have a yacht or plane that can cross the oceans.

So, surprisingly, it is much easier to seal both north and south america than our land borders

The only problem areas would be small planes and oceanic trawlers coming in from Greenland, or from the islands off of Chile. Such areas could be easily sealed using NSA's IR heat-spotting satellites. They could also spot the body heat of eskimos in kayaks, or sailboaters. {About Siberia... our coast guard has long cold war experience with sealing off Siberia}

LOW COST.. JUST EXPAND THE CURRENT SATELLITE WATCH

Those IR satellites were used to watch the seas during the cold war, and I wager they are even now watching the tramp steamers that Newsweek reported as being owned by friends of Osama. So watching these two new problem areas, and the long coasts in general, should be fairly cheap all in all.

Newsweek also reported that microphones were placed on many seabeds to track the soviets, so that also might be used here.

SIX LAYERS OF PROTECTION FROM THE RAGING PANDEMIC

The six: microphones, coast guard boats, patrol aircraft, shore binoculars, radar and above all, those IR satellites. The few who try, would not get through. Only a few psychos would even try. Of the world's psychos, how many own a yacht or plane? Then, how many of those would ignore three warnings on their vessel radio?

By sealing off the americas for the 18 months of the birdflu, we would save 7 million lives.
7 million, plus we save the internal economy {no dead employees, no "40% staying home to avoid the flu".} Well worth the loss of external trade for that short a time. I value 7 million lives and our economy more than external trade.

The current plan forsees 2 million americans dead, plus 40% of employees staying home from work. That not only shuts down 40% of our internal economy, it also has ripple effects that shut down perhaps 40% of the external/import trade.

One city water engineer noted that with the internal economy in shambles, he would not get needed spare parts. Worse, chlorine stocks at city water plants would run out in a few months.. usually two.. and then our cities will suddenly have no water. Cities will empty as people flee to the rivers... which will totally shut down our economy.
CHAOS WILL KILL MORE THAN THE VIRUS WILL

Another observer forsees... the chaos will kill far more than the virus will. Looters will threaten us all. During 18 months of half-staffed fire departments, with little access to water, one has to expect that accidental fires will level most of our cities. Picture the armed gangs that roamed New Orleans after Katrina.. forcing tourists to hide on hotel roofs... and the many fires that broke out.. then picture that continuing for 18 months, getting worse... because the army hasn't got enough soldiers to ride in and rescue all of our cities. Picture also, many deserting the army because of fear of catching the virus.

The chaos will kill more than the virus will. We must keep the birdflu out of our nation. That is worth some effort.

Birdflu:seal the Americas: Oceans perfect barrier: few could try crossing

Our Atlantic and Pacific oceans are the perfect barriers against anyone with birdflu trying to come to North or South America.

Few have yachts able to cross the oceans. Any who try, would easily be spotted by satellites or just binoculars from shore, and could be met by US gunboats.

7,000,000 LIVES SAVED

Keeping the birdflu out of all of the Americas would save about 7 million lives. {my estimate based on Bush's two million figure for just the US.}

Any who claim that 18 months of trade are worth 7 million deaths, are just #!@!!#**.

Besides, the chaos to our internal economy... with 40% of workers afraid to go to work... would have ripple effects that would end perhaps 40% of external trade. The ending of chlorine and city water supplies {above} would doubtless end our entire economy, both internal and all of the outside trade and tourism. We must not let the bird flu in.

THE OTHER NATIONS OF THE AMERICAS

I hope my many friends in the other american nations will like the idea. Some will not. I would like to know of any way to let those who disagree, go on their own way while at the same time using the ocean barrier idea to shield the rest of us. I truly don't like the idea of forcing a solution on those out there who disagree with the barrier idea. Some will see it as more american domination.

If you know of a way around this, I have an open mind.

To avoid the feeling of american dominance, perhaps all the navies of all the nations could take part, perhaps in layers. Ideas invited.
Presently, I see an oceanic shield as the best way to save 7 million, north and south.

AN EASY WAY TO PUT UP A PERFECT SHIELD
It would be a perfect shield. Not one traveller would get through. No one has both a yacht and bigger guns than the US navy. Airlines will stay home when told to. The shield would begin only after it is clear that rapid human-to-human transmission has begun. The experts say human-to-human birdflu is most likely to begin in asia. Migrating birds are a colorful but very tiny part of the overall threat. Human travellers will be the overwhelming problem in the spread and deaths that follow.

HOW TO MAKE IT WORK
Remember ... inventors say "how can this idea be fixed so it will work?". Traditionalists think, "what flaws can i find, so no progress can happen?" If you find a flaw, please be inventive and use your cleverness to also fix it. Are you not clever enough to fix any flaw?

FOR THOSE WITH MORE TIME TO READ...
Similar sea shields could be used for Australia, Japan, England. But the best, most perfect barrier appears to be the one around the americas. Its weakest point would be the islands between Alaska and Siberia. But even there, our coast guard has long experience from the Cold War, experience in keeping folks from crossing from Siberia to the US. Underwater microphones were put on the sea bed to listen for the sound of boats, according to Newsweek. There, and also in most of the world's oceans as well, from when we wanted to know of the soviet's naval movements. So, many ways to spot sea travellers - microphones, coast guard planes, naval patrols, coastal binoculars and satellites.
OIL
We can import from Venezula, Bolivia and Chile. We can accelerate the use of ethanol {Brazil is now mostly on ethanol} and methanol, which comes from abundant coal supplies. We can tap the Strategic Reserves. If need be, we can import from the Saudis to our offshore terminal just south of New Orleans... called the LOOP. I feel certain our army can also rig up a temporary copy of it off of New Jersey, using long hoses and a barge.
Remember, we survived the Arab Oil Embargo back in the seventies.

SPARE PARTS
Tractors... Cuba has kept many of their american cars still going... after spare parts were cut off about 1963. Our foreign made tractors can similarly be kept going with parts fashioned in our machine shops. Yankee ingenuity. We should immediately start stockpiling spare parts for tractors, harvesters, and all essential machinery.

MEDICAL SUPPLIES
The small volume of these that may be needed, can be flown in and the plane parked on an isolated runway. The crew would unload the boxes and return to the craft. Then an american staff would get the boxes, fuel the plane, and return to the main hanger. The foreign plane would then leave. US Marines would would make sure no foreign crew came close enough to our staff to infect them.

EXPORT EMERGENCIES
If India or others should need some items from us on an emergency basis, the items could be shipped or flown there... but the crew and vessel would have to stay there until the pandemic is over. I've read that a virus will "burn out" in time. That would be the final end to the pandemic, AFAIK, and the vessels could then return here.

JOB SHORTAGE is the term we should use. It immediately refutes the usual RW comment "Plenty of jobs, they are all just lazy bums". Don't say "jobless" or "unemployed". That allows the RW to say "plenty of jobs", or for the neutral listeners to just continue thinking that error. JOB SHORTAGE is documented by the fed Dept. of Labor at the link in my sig. When the RW says "pages of classified job ads", reply that "there are even more folks out there looking for jobs". Include the "discouraged", of course.

It combines the main reason for bush's drop in polls, with an upcoming disaster that requires GOOD planning to protect Joe Sixpack voter.

He felt unsafe with DUBAI PORTS... birdflu will cause the same unease with the GOP, widespread voter unease.

So i submit the title as a campaign slogan.
