Reports on Saturday morning from Norway say that at least 80 people were killed at the Youth Center. Tragically a higher number than initially reported.

This headline was posted on the Washington Post tonight but with no other information.

Norway attacks: At least 91 dead in shooting at youth conference, Oslo explosion

Norway police officials gave the gunman’s name as Anders Behring Breivik at a news conference Saturday morning. Norway’s national broadcaster, NRK, and other news outlets in the country also posted pictures of the blond and blue-eyed Norwegian.

“What we know is that he is right wing and he is Christian fundamentalist,” said Roger Andresen, a deputy police chief. “We have not been able to link him up to an anti-Islamic group.” He said that Breivik had not been arrested before.

The Prime Minister, who was taken to a safe location, spoke to the public later vowing that this would not destroy their democracy:

“I have a message to whoever attacked us. It’s a message from all of Norway,” he said. “You will not destroy us. You will not destroy our democracy.”

Norway saw an increased level of far-right extremism in 2010, a trend that is expected to continue this year, according to a Norwegian Police Security Service Annual Threat Assessment. The report also said that “there are indications of contact” between far-right Norwegian extremists and organized criminal groups, which could increase their potential for violence.

Norwegian TV was showing people swimming away from the Island, the article says.
