The FBI now has more than 100 task forces devoted exclusively to fighting terrorism. But is the government manufacturing ghosts?

Rolling Stone's GUY LAWSON wrote an excellent piece on Bush's phony war on terrorism.

While real threats undoubtedly exist, what the Bush administration promotes as a nationwide pattern of terrorist activities is largely the result of its own policies in the age of lawfare.

There are signs, however, that judges and jurors are getting fed up with such concocted "threats." In December, the prosecution of the "Liberty City Seven" ended in one acquittal and a hung jury for the rest of the accused. The supposed cell was accused of preparing a "full ground war" against America by bringing down the Sears Tower and other buildings. At trial, however, it emerged that the men had no operational abilities, that the plots were dreamed up at the exhortation of two paid FBI informants while smoking dope and that the group had been provided its camera, military boots and warehouse by the JTTF.

With permission and a DU brother, here is his response:

Thanks for the article. The examples in the article are exactly why those Americans that do not have their heads buried in the sands of stupidity and complacency realize the exactness of the Bush/Hitler comparisons. The masses of the American general public rarely take the time to expose themselves to the warnings of the many imminent dangers that are lurking just below the surface of this country's political movement. They hang onto every word that Bush and/or his anointed shepherds have to say as if it were the absolute gospel truth and then follow their guidance blindly and hopelessly, no matter where it leads them or what the cost may be. The masses seem to be guided by fear of terrorism, fear of financial disaster, fear of being branded anything less than totally patriotic and by absolute fear of taking a firm stand for anything that is contrary to the likes of the Bush administration. Even as the Bush administration slowly approached its end, his replacement to continue the status quo lies between an advocate of big business, (Romney), and the lover of war, "stay in Iraq for a hundred years more" Mc Cain. I personally see a lot of dark clouds starting to cover our chances for real change.

With the cooperation of the Democrats and mass media, the “war on terror” gave the “decider” and his clique the political ability to impose an unconstitutional, rightwing agenda at home, at the expense of the rule of law, economic equality, environmental and other regulation, and social solidarity. The increased military budget and militarization of U.S. society, the explosive growth in corporate "counter-terrorism" and "homeland security" enterprises, the greater centralization of power in the executive branch, the enhanced inequality, the unimpeded growth of the prison-industrial complex, the more rightwing judiciary, and the failure of the Democrats to do anything to counter these trends since the 2006 election, suggests that the shift to the right and to a more militarized society and expansionist foreign policy may have become permanent features of life in the United States. Is that not a war on terror success story, given the aims of its creators?
