This was at the end of a three-page article in the Miami Herald on March 17:

Police Chief Bill Lee said that although police do not encourage watch program volunteers to carry weapons, he recognizes a citizen’s constitutional right to do so. No arrest was made, Lee said, because there was no evidence to disprove Zimmerman’s account.

He has cooperated with the investigation and never retained an attorney, Lee said. His phone numbers are disconnected and no one answered the door at his home or his parents’ home. His in-laws shooed a reporter away. After death threats and an avalanche of hate mail, Lee said Zimmerman went into hiding. Local station WFTV Channel 9 reported that he showed up with a truck last week and moved out.

.....

So this Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee knew early on that Zimmerman went on the run after murdering this young boy.

This is in the March 12 edition of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel:

.....

Zimmerman, a 28-year-old criminal justice major at Seminole State College, has stayed silent as the shooting has garnered national headlines.

Attempts by The Miami Herald to reach him have been unsuccessful — a telephone number listed to him has been disconnected — and it was unclear Sunday whether he had retained an attorney.

Martin's family has grown impatient as weeks have passed and no criminal charges have been filed. The family's attorneys recently filed suit to force police to turn over the 911 phone recordings and other investigative documents.

.....

Inexcusably, the news that Zimmerman fled early on did not get much notice.

After having had plenty of time to disconnect his phone, rent a truck, load it and move out of his house, George Zimmerman was allowed to escape prosecution, for the glaring reason that Sanford Police Chief Bill Lee refused to arrest him after he murdered this young boy on February 26.

“We are taking a beating over this,” said (Sanford Police Chief Bill) Lee, who defends the investigation. “This is all very unsettling. I’m sure if George Zimmerman had the opportunity to relive Sunday, Feb. 26, he’d probably do things differently. I’m sure Trayvon would, too.” ---Miami Herald, March 17, 2012

What a callous excuse for a police chief.

What should Trayvon have done differently, Police Chief Bill Lee?

Not be visiting a friend with his father? Not have had his hands in his pockets, holding candy and a can of iced tea? Not be wearing a hooded sweatshirt when it was raining that night?

This man is a fool and a disgrace to his uniform.

Finally, yesterday, Chief Lee was forced to step down ("temporarily", the Chief claims) after heavy pressure. Lee claims his role is "a distraction".

No, Mr. Lee, your role is central to the core of this case. You refused to arrest George Zimmerman for a cold blooded murder. And now, we have a murderer who has escaped and is currently at large.

Bill Lee, Sanford Police Chief, Steps Down Temporarily Over Trayvon Martin Case, March 22, 2012

SANFORD, Fla. -- At a hastily called press conference Thursday afternoon, Sanford City Manager Norton Bonaparte Jr. announced that beleaguered police Chief Bill Lee Jr. is stepping down temporarily amid growing anger over his handling of the investigation into the killing of Trayvon Martin. Bonaparte told reporters that he hoped the move would "restore calm to the city of Sanford" and help speed the case through the legal process. He said that the city has not yet appointed an interim chief.

"I am aware that my role as the head of the department has become a distraction," said Lee at the press conference. "I have come to the decision to temporarily remove myself."

.....

Turner Clayton, head of the local NAACP, said he'd been meeting with city officials for more than a week, pushing for Lee's firing or resignation. He said that while Lee's temporary resignation is a good start, ultimately the community wants his permanent removal.

.....

In dragging his feet, Clayton said, Bonaparte is putting his own political career in Sanford in jeopardy. While the police chief serves at the pleasure of the city manager, the manager serves at the pleasure of the city commission. "His stubbornness could cost him his job," Clayton said.

.....

Trayvon Martin's agonizingly brief young life will transform this country.

Rest in peace, Trayvon.
