PHILADELPHIA — Senator Barack Obama delivered a sweeping assessment of race in America on Tuesday, bluntly confronting the divisions between black and white as he sought to dispel the furor over inflammatory statements by his former pastor

~snip~

“The fact is,” he said, “that the comments that have been made and the issues that have surfaced over the last few weeks reflect the complexities of race in this country that we’ve never really worked through — a part of our Union that we have yet to perfect.

“And if we walk away now,” he continued, “if we simply retreat into our respective corners, we will never be able to come together and solve challenges like health care, or education, or the need to find good jobs for every American.”

~snip~

Mr. Obama stayed up well into the night writing much of the speech himself, aides said. His words carried familiar strains of the biography he wrote more than a decade ago about his search for racial identify.

WASHINGTON — Top supporters of Senator Barack Obama, joined by at least one prominent Democrat yet to endorse a candidate, put pressure on Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton on Sunday to bow out of the presidential race unless she scores clear victories in the crucial big-state primary contests on Tuesday.

“I just think that D-Day is Tuesday,” said Gov. Bill Richardson of New Mexico, a former Democratic presidential candidate who has yet to throw his support behind either candidate.

And two Obama supporters, Senators John Kerry and Dick Durbin, pushed for Mrs. Clinton to withdraw if she does poorly at the polls on Tuesday.

~snip~

Mr. Richardson, saying that it was vital to Democrats’ hopes in the general election in November to mount a positive, unifying campaign, said on the CBS News program “Face the Nation” that “whoever has the most delegates after Tuesday clearly, in my judgment, should be the nominee.”

For that to be Mrs. Clinton, she would have to significantly exceed the results predicted by polls, which now show Texas a virtual toss-up, while Ohio voters narrowly favor her. In the smaller states, Mrs. Clinton holds a lead in Rhode Island while Mr. Obama has the edge in Vermont.

~snip~
And a Clinton supporter, Senator Dianne Feinstein of California, said on “Fox News Sunday” that Mrs. Clinton should ignore the pressure to bow out and decide for herself what is best. “Hillary Clinton is a major candidate,” Ms. Feinstein said. “She has every right to stay in the race if she chooses to do so.”

New allegations against Armstrong

Barely three weeks after the Vrijman report dismissed L'Equipe's allegations that Lance Armstrong used EPO in 1999, the now retired seven-time Tour champion has come under fire from another angle. French newspaper Le Monde is reporting in its Friday edition that Armstrong admitted to using performance enhancing drugs prior to contracting testicular cancer in 1996.

The allegations were made during the SCA Promotions vs. Armstrong trial that is in progress in Lance's home state of Texas. SCA Promotions is an insurance company that paid Armstrong millions of dollars for his Tour wins after the team took out a $420,000 insurance policy in 2001. But following the publication of David Walsh and Pierre Ballester's book, LA Confidentiel, les secrets de Lance Armstrong, which alleged that Armstrong had used illegal drugs, SCA disputed the $5 million payment for the 2004 Tour, saying that it wanted evidence (Armstrong's medical records, for example) that the allegations were untrue.

In court statements obtained by Le Monde, Betsy Andreu, the partner of Armstrong's ex-teammate and friend Frankie Andreu, related her version of events that took place in an Indiana hospital on October 28, 1996, while he was being treated for cancer. " started to ask him banal questions, I don't remember," Le Monde quoted an excerpt of Betsy Andreu's testimony. "And all of a sudden, bang, have you ever taken doping products? He replied, yes. asked which ones. And Lance replied: EPO, growth hormones, cortisone, steroids, testosterone."

but for some reason this got attached to another comment and I wanted attached to the OP.

I have been away for a few hours could someone give me an update.

I know this

1) TO issued a statement about a partial apology along with a wait and see approach

I hope that this whole thing doesn't bury TO, I felt like the rug was pulled out from under me today when we found out that they were de-listed from Google News.

I would like to keep going to the liberal sites like TO, RS, ect. I will as long as they don't get destroyed by stuff like this. This week has been the biggest story/non-story in the history of American politics, at least for me.

I am relieved that TO issued a statement.

I think we should be thankful for places like TO, RS, FDL, BuzzFlash, TBTM, Crooks & Liars, Media Matters, BradBlog, HuffPo and probably 6 others that I am forgetting, these people bust their ass to bring us what they think is important, which usually is.

My final thoughts are this, cause my lady is hollering at me to get off the puter and spend some time with her, which I badly need, her and a break from DU. I have learned and grown quite a bit this week, thanks to all who have help me along the way I think this journey is over and a new one may be on the horizon. We(the readers and people of DU) along with the Liberal Sites/Blogs wouldn't have come as far as we have if we weren't there for each other - call it a symbiotic relationship or whatever, but I want people to realize the value of what we get vs the value that we give back.

Peace and Virgin Olive Oil Grease.

Below is an email I just go from someone who does work for the company that I work for, the first part is theirs(which was in all red fonts), the second part is mine(which has already been sent). I usually ignore these things but this one just set me off. Let me know how I did, also everything said in it is true as far as my family and all. Let me know if there is something that could be done better in case I need to do this again, or better yet in case I need to respond to their reply.

Red Friday

Just keeping you "in the loop" so you'll know what's going on in case this takes off.

RED FRIDAYS ----- Very soon you will see a great many people wearing Red every Friday. The reason? Americans who support our troops used to be called the "silent majority". We are no longer silent, and are voicing our love for God, country and home in record breaking numbers. We are not organized, boisterous or over-bearing. We get no liberal media coverage on TV to reflect our message or our opinions.

Many Americans, like you, me and all our friends, simply want to recognize that the vast majority of America supports our troops. Our idea of showing solidarity and support for our troops with dignity and respect starts this Friday and continues each and every Friday until the troops all come home, sending a deafening message that.. Every red-blooded American who supports our men and women afar will wear something red

By word of mouth, press, TV -- let's make the United States on every Friday a sea of red much like a homecoming football game in the bleachers. If every one of us who loves this country will share this with acquaintances, co-workers, friends, and family it won't be long before the USA is covered in RED and it will let our troops know that the once "silent" majority is on their side more than ever, certainly more than the media lets on.

The first thing a soldier says when asked "What can we do to make things better for you?" is...We need your support and your prayers. Let's get the word out and lead with class and dignity, by example, and wear something red every Friday.

IF YOU AGREE -- THEN SEND THIS ON

IF YOU COULDN'T CARE LESS THEN HIT THE DELETE BUTTON --- IT IS YOUR CHOICE. WE LIVE IN THE LAND OF THE FREE, ONLY BECAUSE OF THE BRAVE.

THEIR BLOOD RUNS RED---- SO WEAR RED! --- MAY GOD HELP AMERICA TO BECOME ONE NATION, UNDER GOD.

HAVE A GREAT DAY!

Here is my reply

Both of my parents are retired active duty Army. My grandfather served in WWII, he also was an engineer for GM in which he ended up drawing up plans for the Catalytic Converter found on most cars. My family is from the Midwest. So when it comes to Mom, Apple Pie and the Stars and Stripes you won't find anyone more patriotic than me.

They(my retied Active Duty parents) like the rest of our elected officials when they took their oaths, swore by placing their hand on the Bible to up hold the Constitution of the United States of America, they did not swear by placing their hands upon the Constitution of the United States in order to uphold the Bible.

As for supporting our troops I have sent care packages which they badly need see here: www.anysoldier.com whenever I am able. In addition to this I have sent care packages for the Iraqi's hopefully it will make up for the 100,000 - 150,000 that we have killed so far in the name of WMD,s, Iraqi Freedom or whatever the talking point is this month. As a Christian I always wonder who would Jesus bomb? Furthermore, I feel that these support/care packages would not be needed if the Liberal Media did their job, which was to make this War and it's lead up a platform for good open discourse. Instead they published countless false reports about WMD's on behalf of the current Administration. - see Judy Miller NYT. To further underscore this carrying the water for the Administration - see James Risen - NYT holding NSA domestic spying story for more than a year, which if it had been released when they got it would have been sometime in the fall of 2004. The job of the media according to our founding fathers is to act as another form of check and balance on the Government, not to serve up softballs or to go along with whatever talking points that are coming out of DC at the time.

I appreciate and applaud any effort in supporting our troops, but anyone who feels this strongly about it should go down to their local recruiting station and volunteer, and if they can't then maybe they have a family member that can and shares the same views. The best way to support our troops while keeping America safe is to get their butts home yesterday.

I am new to Blog entries and journals, also I am not the best writer in the world. I expect to use this area quite frequently over the next few years here at DU. Hopefully my next entries will have something a little more valuable worth reading.

Until next time - Cheers!
