Yes, he says: he will vote in November. Will he tell me who he plans to vote for?

Hi, I'm a volunteer for the Democratic Party; I'm looking for so-and-so

It's a small well-kept house in a modest neighborhood. The sign on the door says

I ring the bell, step back off the porch so I'm not crowding the door, and begin my silent count:

The best part of the walk was the end. I'd parked my car visibly

The two of them are in their yard, backs to the street, watching

I have no idea where he's from. I don't recognize the accent at all. Worse,

He pulls into the driveway as I'm ringing his doorbell, so I turn around

The yard is nicely maintained: the lawn is mowed, the shrubs roundly trimmed. On the porch steps,

There's no shoulder, so I park in his driveway. I dislike doing this,

A cloud of neighborhood children has its collective eye on me from the moment I park.

I'm standing awkwardly at the door, having just asked to speak with a dead man.

I ring the doorbell, and after a little while he comes to the door: in fact, he comes through

I'm speaking with a man who wants to be sure I'll talk with his neighbor too. His neighbor

"She isn't here right now," the woman tells me. I offer to leave my literature and explain

She's opened the door and is waiting. And I'm fumbling badly.

"Who is it?" asks someone from inside. That's not an uncommon reaction

It's a lower middle class backwater. I've lived in this town for decades now, but I've never been

I live in a red precinct in a blue town, and I walked some of my precinct

Near the end of my last Tuesday canvass, I frightened a woman

The ground game matters: it matters in elections and it matters when fighting on issues

I now want to say a few words to my dear friends, my fellow citizens, my sisters and brothers, here

"Try back door if no answer" There's no answer, so I walk down the driveway and knock the rear

Fellow (I'd guess him to be past the long side of seventy) strolls over from an adjoining lot and asks if he can help

I'm a volunteer for the Democratic Party, looking for Mr Y Z

That's him. I run my spiel: Important election. Everybody registered? Need folk who'll support Our President. Want lit on our Senate candidate?

He holds out a gnarled garden-dirt encrusted hand and catches the little flier between two knuckles. A couple of grandkids, maybe five and eight, come from the house and flank him

Will you be voting, sir?
Oh, I never miss an election

I glance at the grandkids. The little girl has adorable braids twisting out every which way. Both of them are beaming beaming beaming at me. I nod and smile at each of them

Can I ask if you'll be voting Democratic?
I always vote Democratic. I've never made enough money to vote Republican

The kids have come out to talk with him not me, so I smile, thank them all, and move on down the block

Hi Mike,

No problem. I am quite happy to work this stuff through in a careful way
and am happy to discuss it all with you. I certainly don't want the work to
be viewed as an attack on previous work such as yours. Unfortunately, this
global change stuff is so politicized by both sides of the issue that it is
difficult to do the science in a dispassionate environment. I ran into the
same problem in the acid rain/forest decline debate that raged in the
1980s. At one point, I was simultaneous accused of being a raving tree
hugger and in the pocket of the coal industry. I have always said that I
don't care what answer is found as long as it is the truth or at least
bloody close to it.

Sloganeering about Iran is not a substitute for accurate thinking

In 1979, the Iranians rebelled against one repressive regime, propped up by outside support -- and managed to replace it with another repressive regime. The dynamics that allowed the religious fundamentalists to seize control in 1979 are not entirely clear to me: one possibility is that the mosques became the only safe places as the Shah attempted to maintain control

The history of covert US involvement may be more extensive than anyone realizes: of course, the CIA role in 1954 is well-known, but the Iran-Contra arms transfer when Reagan was President and Mousavi was Prime Minister remains a murky mystery -- and perhaps the US oddly was supporting both sides in the Iran-Iraq war. The US neo-cons are curiously supporting Ahmadinejad currently, apparently in order to be able to strengthen a case for war against Iran

Today, there are a number of posts on DU blaming the 1988 political prisoner executions on Mousavi, who was prime minister at the time, often with the claim that Mousavi was a "socialist." But the pretext for those executions was an MEK attempt to invade from Iraq to overthrow the Iranian government, and the W administration subsequently used the MEK as the face of Iranian opposition. This suggests long-term covert connections with the MEK and the possibility that the 1988 invasion was deliberately engineered as a provocation. Mousavi, of course, was appointed Prime Minister by Ayatollah Khomeini -- and therefore his credentials as a reformer are suspect, at best. But the only high-level first-hand account of the 1988 prisoner executions comes from Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri, who attributes a significant role to Mustafa Pour-Mohammadi -- Ahmadinejad chose as Minister of Interior

I cannot imagine how anyone of sound mind could really support the present Iranian regime, as it is reactionary and brutal. On the other hand, the neocon warmongers remain eager to unleash a Middle Eastern Armageddon, which cannot help the majority of people in the region, and in pursuit of their goal they continue to be exceedingly dishonest. This leads to painful policy considerations. For example, under W the neocons tried to create hysteria about Iran's nuclear program, as part of a more general neocon attempt to undermine the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) to which Iran is a signatory and under which Iran's nuclear activities are actually legal: as an opponent of nuclear power, who thinks the civilian nuclear power industry was created as a propaganda cover for the Cold War arms race, I find myself in the awkward position of having to support Iran's enrichment activities because the NPT deserved support

I posted this Mousavi piece for information purposes. He is writing for an Iranian audience and the piece may therefore shed some light on politics and culture

Iran's 'terrorists' helped disclose nuke program
By Barbara Slavin, USA TODAY
... The U.S. posture has been ambiguous. The MEK's violent habits — it has a history of bombings and assassinations, including the murder of six Americans — earned it a spot on the State Department list of terrorist groups in 1997. But the group gained publicity three years ago by exposing a secret Iranian nuclear program, alerting the public to the extent of Iran's apparent efforts to build a bomb. President Bush alluded to this in a March 16 news conference, when he said that the nuclear program had been revealed by a "dissident" group. Meanwhile, nearly 4,000 members of the group are in a military camp in Iraq, Camp Ashraf, 60 miles north of Baghdad. The regime of Saddam Hussein gave them refuge before the war ...

MEK Tricks US Progressives, Gains Legitimacy
by Rostam Pourzal
On May 26, 2006, a representative of the violent Iranian fugitives based in Iraq, known as MEK, addressed a forum -- an anti-war forum -- sponsored by the liberal Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists in Berkeley, California, as he had done the year before. Introduced as Ali Mirardal, the speaker lamented human rights abuses in Iran and offered the National Council of Resistance, a Paris-based front group for MEK, as the best hope for a democratic Iran. The US State Department has listed both as terrorist organizations ...

The Jim Crow era in American history dates from the late 1890s, when southern states began systematically to codify .. in law and state constitutional provisions the subordinate position of African Americans in society ... The year 1890, when Mississippi wrote a disfranchisement provision into its state constitution, is often considered the beginning of legalized Jim Crow ...

In 1894, at the beginning of the modern Jim Crow era, Mississippi replaced the magnolia flag with one containing the Confederate emblem

In 1956, two years after Brown v. Topeka, as the civil rights movement began to spread, Georgia modified its flag to contain the Confederate emblem

Google has unveiled a new behavioral targeting system that'll read your browsing history, then cater ads based on where you've been. While Google sells the concept as an user-oriented improvement that'll bring you "more interesting" and "useful" content, you may want to consider the privacy implications of having your surfing habits monitored and monetized.

If there's one site you visit, it should be the Network Advertising Initiative's Opt-Out Tool. NAI, a consumer awareness organization, has created a handy utility that lets you see more than two dozen ad networks that may be pulling your info (even though you've probably never heard of most of them). The page shows you which companies have cookies set on your computer, then offers you an option to turn them off.

· Google's ad system has its own opt-out page here.

· Yahoo's targeting program lets you say "no thanks" here ...

the costs.

Even without viewing a birth certificate (original or otherwise), anyone can easily find multiple lines of evidence indicating Obama meets the constitutional requirements. One has, for example, the announcements of his 4 August 1961 birth from both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Star Bulletin, as well as statements from the Hawaiian health director and Republican governor Lingle that the birth records are in order. We know he has a US passport, since he has visited Kenya several times, and that passport could only have been obtained if he were born a citizen or a noncitizen national or naturalized; however the State Department categorized him should be very easy to determine, if necessary, since the passport contains the date and place of birth determined by the State Department. Thus, a number of people at the State Department or at USCIS would know if he were a noncitizen national or had been naturalized. And if his passport file shed some damning light on the subject, that would be public by now, since a number of people viewed it without authorization. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996; under the Illinois Constitution Art IV Sec 2(c), this office (which he held nearly eight years, including a re-election) requires US citizenship. He ran for the US House in 2000; under the US Constitution, Art I Sec 2 par 2 this office requires citizenship. He was elected to the Senate in 2004; under the US Constitution, Art I Sec 3 par 3, this office (which he held nearly four years) require citizenship. So the Illinois and US Senates obviously consider him a citizen: these institutions contain a number of people opposed to his political views. Finally, he was sworn as President before his political friends and foes alike, by the highest judicial officer, who is from the opposite party. In short, for Obama to be a foreign national, a noncitizen national, or a naturalized citizen would have required a conspiracy of gigantic sweep across the political spectrum and over many years

she comes from a rightwing family and holds rightwing views. Considered in isolation, of course, it would not mean much that she decided during the Reagan era to immigrate to the US or that in the last Presidential election she supported the Republican campaign (one of the nastiest campaigns in recent memory). But such facts need not be considered in isolation. She has regularly appeared on rightwing talkshows. More to the point, her understanding of Venezuela today is probably colored by her brother's views. So let us remember briefly who her brother is:

Venezuela Captures Paramilitary Group Seeking to Overthrow Chavez
May 9th 2004, by

unday, May 9, 2004 ( Venezuelan authorities captured this morning a group of 55 Colombian paramilitaries who were receiving training at a farm nearby Caracas in preparation for attacks on Venezuelan military bases and for a coup d'etat against the government of Hugo Chavez.

The raid was conducted by the civilian intelligence service DISIP, military intelligence officers and the Scientific, Penal and Criminal Investigation Department (CICPC). The property where the paramilitaries were captured is located in the municipality of Baruta, in southeastern Caracas. Footage by state TV showed what appeared to be living quarters, with beds and kitchens ...

According to authorities, the property where the paramilitaries were captured belongs to anti-government political leader Robert Alonso. Mr. Alonso, of Cuban origin, is a legal resident of the United States, and creator of the civilian resistance plan called "Guarimba", aimed at toppling the Chavez government and which was first implemented at the end of February in Caracas during the Presidential Summit of the Group of the 15.

Mr. Robert Alonso is one of the leaders of an opposition coalition know as Bloque Democrático (Democratic Block) and he is also tied to the larger Coordinadora Democratica opposition coalition. He is the brother of Cuban-Venezuelan actress Maria Conchita Alonso ...

War on Hugo Chávez
An outlaw and former spook takes on the Venezuelan dictator
By Janine Zeitlin
Published on October 10, 2007 at 10:41am

... Robert dubs the plan that caused him to flee his homeland La Guarimba, and says it's nonviolent. But the last time he made his pitch for revolt — in 2004 — at least 13 people were killed and more than 100 were wounded in clashes. "If you don't follow the instructions, it's not my fault.... When you commit yourself to something, you have to quemar los barcos, burn the ships. There's no way out," says the 57-year-old with a shock of white hair and an ample belly. "We're at war" ...

At some point in April 2004, he met with other activists calling themselves the "Brigade Daktari." (A Venezuelan flag hangs on his home office wall with about 50 signatures from this mysterious meeting.) Then he left for Colombia. Carrying a GPS, Alonso says, he navigated the jungle between the two countries and then hopped a bus to Bogotá. He took a plane to Miami in late April ...

Alonso looks like a retiree who stopped by for an afternoon cafecito. He's wearing blue sweatpants, tan sandals, and a turquoise T-shirt. Clamor from the espresso machine and blenders fills the room as a man in a button-down shirt carrying a briefcase strides through the bakery doors and beelines for the table. He silently drops a manila folder before Alonso.

The mystery man is Marlon Gutiérrez, a 45-year-old former Nicaraguan Contra. Alonso takes some papers from the folder and looks them over. They are bylaws for their new group, Fundación Interamericana por la Democracia, which will organize Guarimba resistance movements in Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela ... /

One can infer the political role María Conchita Alonso plays rather clearly from articles like the following:

Alonso rips tyrant Chavez

... The former beauty queen and pop singer is producing a documentary, "Two Minutes of Hate," about the events of April 11, 2002, when Chavez dispatched snipers to stop a peaceful protest march. "Nineteen died, and more than a hundred were hurt," said Alonso, who fears it is already too late to stop him ...

Now, on April 11, 2002, there was a coup d'état in Venezuela, that seized control for two days and installed Carmona, who dissolved the National Assembly and Supreme Court before Chavez's elected government regained control. So perhaps one might want to know rather more than two minutes about those days, more than could be provided by Alonso's "Two Minutes" (billed as a fictional love story interspliced with "archival footage"). "Two Minutes of Hate" certainly gave Alonso an extended opportunity to propound her view without fear of contradiction -- since, of course, the talkshows typically don't allow counterpoint when actresses promote their films

underscores a point often forgotten: some of the US bio-weapons scientists are really rather odd folk, whose fantasies make most of us cringe

I agree that it is unlikely that HIV/AIDS was designed in a government lab and then deliberately released into US minority communities -- because neither the pace of biological research in the 1970s, nor the currently-known epidemiological history of HIV/AIDS, lends plausibility to the theory

Nevertheless, although I disbelieve the theory myself, I find it easy to understand why a person, with a non-technical background and a certain knowledge of history, might regard the theory as plausible:

First, there is a long history of US officials experimenting with unwitting populations, including: a deliberate long-term non-treatment of African-American syphilitics so the US Public Health Service could determine by autopsy the effects of untreated syphilis, extensive experimentation (by the CIA) with the effects of LSD on unsuspecting persons, and deliberate exposure to radiation of large populations (by the Atomic Energy Commission)

Second, by the late 1960s, some bio-weapons researchers were considering the possibility of developing, within a decade, a new infectious disease that side-stepped existing immunological responses -- and HIV/AIDS was recognized approximately within that time frame

Thus, although Reverend Wright was probably completely wrong here, perhaps his beliefs do not prove him a total crack-pot but simply highlight his non-technical background

Links follow:

Aug 26, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – US Navy and Air Force officials recently reported a suspension of work in their biodefense laboratories to allow a thorough review of safety procedures, following the Army's announcement in early August that it would review security measures at the lab that housed the work of the late Bruce E. Ivins, whom federal officials believe played a role in the 2001 anthrax attacks.

The FBI's Aug 6 announcement of its conclusion that Ivins was responsible for the attacks came 9 days after he apparently committed suicide. Ivins had worked at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) for years, doing research that included work on anthrax vaccines. Shortly after the 2001 attacks he had also helped the FBI analyze anthrax samples, according to media reports.

The FBI's allegations about Ivins raised questions about how secure the USAMRIID facility was. , Reports of Ivins' past mental health problems also prompted questions about how well lab employees are screened before they are cleared to work with bioterror agents ...

The Tuskegee Syphilis Experiment
by Borgna Brunner

For forty years between 1932 and 1972, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) conducted an experiment on 399 black men in the late stages of syphilis. These men, for the most part illiterate sharecroppers from one of the poorest counties in Alabama, were never told what disease they were suffering from or of its seriousness. Informed that they were being treated for “bad blood,” their doctors had no intention of curing them of syphilis at all.

The data for the experiment was to be collected from autopsies of the men, and they were thus deliberately left to degenerate under the ravages of tertiary syphilis—which can include tumors, heart disease, paralysis, blindness, insanity, and death. “As I see it,” one of the doctors involved explained, “we have no further interest in these patients until they die” ...

... The CIA was fascinated by LSD, and thought it a wonder drug that could be used not only to create zombie-like armies, but to drive enemy leaders like Fidel Castro insane. There were few willing subjects in the research — often, LSD was secretly given to a range of people, from CIA employees to prostitutes and the mentally ill. Sometimes, agents even posed as prostitutes and secretly drugged their clients, while fellow agents watched in two-way mirrors ...

... On June 9, 1969, Dr. Donald M. MacArthur, Deputy Director, Research and Engineering, Department of Defense, testified before Congress:

Within the next 5 to 10 years, it would probably be possible to make a new infective microorganism which could differ in certain important aspects from any known disease-causing organisms. Most important of these is that it might be refractory to the immunological and therapeutic processes upon which we depend to maintain our relative freedom from infectious disease.

Whether the United States actually developed such a microorganism and what it did with it has not been reported. AIDS was first identified by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1981 ...

Avoid getting into a discussion about whether global warming is really occurring, whether human activities are causing global warming, or what the exact impacts of global warming would be: those are scientific questions, which must be decided by scientific methods. Avoid calling people rightwingers or using other politically charged language. A very polite letter, containing your concerns in writing, might be a better than an attempt at a verbal debate on global warming

(1) You are concerned that the teacher seems to be misusing the school science class as a propaganda outlet. The purpose of a school science class is to teach students something about how modern science works: how experts produce and improve scientific knowledge by developing and testing scientific theories

(2) There is reason to think the youtube piece is propaganda

(2)(a)(i) It distributed by "" which appears to be the website of Mike Baker of Chugiak AK:
(2)(a)(ii) Mr Baker's odd views include "Obama is nothing but a white man, pretending to be a black man who's pretending to be a white man": /

(2)(b)(i) There are a number of specific technical questions that must be addressed to determine whether global warming is really occurring, whether human activities are causing global warming, and what the exact impacts of global warming would be. See (say) "The AR4 Synthesis Report.
Working Group I Report 'The Physical Science Basis' ":
(2)(b)(ii) Such technical questions must be studied by experts. A major problem with the propaganda youtube shown in the science class is that non-experts pretend to speak with authority about subjects they do not study. For example:
(2)(b)(ii)(1) The youtube piece shows Ian Clark discussing the effect of global warming on polar bears. However, Clark's scientific expertise is isotope hydrogeology, not polar bear ecology:
(2)(b)(ii)(2) Similarly, the youtube piece shows Syun-Ichi Akasofu discussing global warming. However, Akasofu's scientific expertise is the aurora borealis and related phenomena, not global climate modeling:
(2)(b)(ii)(3) Nigel Calder, shown in the the youtube piece, is not a scientist but a documentary film-maker who promotes conspiratorial views about global warming:

(2)(c) Scientists must search impartially for the true facts, without special interest, and report their results accurately. Unfortunately, many of the speakers quoted in the youtube piece fail these trests
(2)(c)(i) For example, Patrick Michaels misrepresented his position at the University of Virginia and resigned in a scandal resulting from his politicization of the position:
(2)(c)(ii) Michaels has also regularly received funding from fossil fuel organizations, such as the German Coal Association, that represent industry groups whose economic interests might be hurt if global warming were known to be caused by human activity and were known to have potentially serious impacts:
(2)(c)(iii) Similarly, Richard Lindzen has regularly received funding from fossil fuel organizations that represent industry groups whose economic interests might be hurt if global warming were known to be caused by human activity and were known to have potentially serious impacts:
(2)(c)(iv) Similarly, Fred Singer has received funding from fossil fuel organizations that represent industry groups whose economic interests might be hurt if global warming were known to be caused by human activity and were known to have potentially serious impacts; he also has a history of producing lobbying materials for special interest groups such as the tobacco industry:
(2)(c)(v) Similarly, Tim Ball is (according to the Calgary Herald) "a paid promoter of the agenda of the oil and gas industry rather than as a practicing scientist":
2(d) Thus, rather than quoting real scientists, the youtube piece appears to be quoting lobbyists masquerading as scientists or former scientists who have become lobbyists

(3) Many excellent scientific materials are available on the topic of global warming. Such materials would be appropriate in a science class. Propaganda, however, is not appropriate

Jurors Convict Former Wizard In Klan Murder
Published: August 22, 1998

... A jury of six blacks, five whites and one Asian-American convicted Sam H. Bowers, a former Imperial Wizard of the Mississippi White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, of murder in the Jan. 10, 1966, firebombing that mortally injured Vernon Dahmer Sr., who had been marked for death because he used his rural store during the 1960's as a place to register fellow blacks to vote ...

In the winter of 1965, Jones County, north of Hattiesburg, was regarded as one of the meanest in Mississippi for Klan activity. It was Mr. Bowers's base of operations.

In a farmhouse just to the south, outside Hattiesburg, Mr. Bowers summoned Klan members in the months before Mr. Dahmer's murder and asked them why ''something hadn't been done'' about Mr. Dahmer, the former Klansmen testified. Mr. Bowers planned Mr. Dahmer's death, and on a cold January night sent two carloads of Klansmen south with 12 gallons of gasoline and shotguns. One way or the other, Vernon Dahmer Sr. was a dead man.

The men hurled the gallons of gasoline into the house, where Mr. Dahmer Sr., his wife and three of his children slept ...

Action Request & Update on ICE Raid in Mississippi

Subject: Action Request & Update on ICE Raid in Mississippi

... Laurel has the distinction of being located in Jones County, headquarters for two notorious racist and anti-immigrant groups, the KKK and MFIRE, the Mississippi branch of FAIR, the national anti-immigrant group.

Earlier this year the Mississippi legislature passed and the Governor signed into law Senate bill 2988, the most draconian employer sanctions law passed to date in the U.S. that further criminalizes workers, especially immigrants, and opens the door for employers to discriminate against Latinos and others.

SB 2988 makes it a felony to work without authorization in Mississippi. SB 2988 imposes a one to five year prison sentence and hefty fines of $1,000 to $10,000. No one has yet been charged under SB 2988 ...

Mississippi’s SB 2988

... The Mississippi bill goes much further, however. Employers are absolved from any liability for hiring undocumented workers as long as they use the E-Verify system. But it will be a felony for an undocumented worker to hold a job. Anyone caught "shall be subject to imprisonment in the custody of the Department of Corrections for not less than one (1) year nor more than five (5) years, a fine of not less than one thousand dollars ($1,000) nor more than ten thousand dollars ($10,000) or both." Anyone charged with the crime of working without papers will not be eligible for bail. The law is set to become effective on July 1.

In Mississippi, African American political leaders and immigrant and labor organizers have cooperated in organizing one of the country's most active immigrant rights coalitions —the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance (MIRA). They see hope for political transformation in the demographic changes sweeping the south. In the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, University of Mississippi journalism professor Joe Atkins called the law "a new xenophobia...that threatens once again to lock down the state's borders and resurrect the ‘closed society' that once made it the shame of the nation." According to MIRA, the bill got the support of many Democratic state legislators because party leaders "wanted the house to bring out at least one bill dealing with immigration to relieve the political pressure being put on members (i.e., white Democrats) by right-wing forces in their districts. Many Black Caucus members were persuaded to go along. Unfortunately, the bill they brought out was the worst of the six the Mississippi Senate passed" ...

And the AP writes a story about supposed tensions between the union and the immigrants ...
