No problem. I am quite happy to work this stuff through in a careful way
and am happy to discuss it all with you. I certainly don't want the work to
be viewed as an attack on previous work such as yours. Unfortunately, this
global change stuff is so politicized by both sides of the issue that it is
difficult to do the science in a dispassionate environment. I ran into the
same problem in the acid rain/forest decline debate that raged in the
1980s. At one point, I was simultaneous accused of being a raving tree
hugger and in the pocket of the coal industry. I have always said that I

Sloganeering about Iran is not a substitute for accurate thinking
In 1979, the Iranians rebelled against one repressive regime, propped up by outside support -- and managed to replace it with another repressive regime. The dynamics that allowed the religious fundamentalists to seize control in 1979 are not entirely clear to me: one possibility is that the mosques became the only safe places as the Shah attempted to maintain control
The history of covert US involvement may be more extensive than anyone realizes: of course, the CIA role in 1954 is well-known, but the Iran-Contra arms transfer when Reagan was President and Mousavi was Prime Minister remains a murky mystery -- and perhaps the US oddly was supporting both sides in the Iran-Iraq war. The US neo-cons are curiously supporting Ahmadinejad currently, apparently in order to be able to strengthen a case for war against Iran
Today, there are a number of posts on DU blaming the 1988 political prisoner executions on Mousavi, who was prime minister at the time, often with the claim that Mousavi was a "socialist." But the pretext for those executions was an MEK attempt to invade from Iraq to overthrow the Iranian government, and the W administration subsequently used the MEK as the face of Iranian opposition. This suggests long-term covert connections with the MEK and the possibility that the 1988 invasion was deliberately engineered as a provocation. Mousavi, of course, was appointed Prime Minister by Ayatollah Khomeini -- and therefore his credentials as a reformer are suspect, at best. But the only high-level first-hand account of the 1988 prisoner executions comes from Ayatollah Hussein Ali Montazeri, who attributes a significant role to Mustafa Pour-Mohammadi -- Ahmadinejad chose as Minister of Interior
I cannot imagine how anyone of sound mind could really support the present Iranian regime, as it is reactionary and brutal. On the other hand, the neocon warmongers remain eager to unleash a Middle Eastern Armageddon, which cannot help the majority of people in the region, and in pursuit of their goal they continue to be exceedingly dishonest. This leads to painful policy considerations. For example, under W the neocons tried to create hysteria about Iran's nuclear program, as part of a more general neocon attempt to undermine the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty (NPT) to which Iran is a signatory and under which Iran's nuclear activities are actually legal: as an opponent of nuclear power, who thinks the civilian nuclear power industry was created as a propaganda cover for the Cold War arms race, I find myself in the awkward position of having to support Iran's enrichment activities because the NPT deserved support

Google has unveiled a new behavioral targeting system that'll read your browsing history, then cater ads based on where you've been. While Google sells the concept as an user-oriented improvement that'll bring you "more interesting" and "useful" content, you may want to consider the privacy implications of having your surfing habits monitored and monetized.
If there's one site you visit, it should be the Network Advertising Initiative's Opt-Out Tool. NAI, a consumer awareness organization, has created a handy utility that lets you see more than two dozen ad networks that may be pulling your info (even though you've probably never heard of most of them). The page shows you which companies have cookies set on your computer, then offers you an option to turn them off.

Even without viewing a birth certificate (original or otherwise), anyone can easily find multiple lines of evidence indicating Obama meets the constitutional requirements. One has, for example, the announcements of his 4 August 1961 birth from both the Honolulu Advertiser and the Star Bulletin, as well as statements from the Hawaiian health director and Republican governor Lingle that the birth records are in order. We know he has a US passport, since he has visited Kenya several times, and that passport could only have been obtained if he were born a citizen or a noncitizen national or naturalized; however the State Department categorized him should be very easy to determine, if necessary, since the passport contains the date and place of birth determined by the State Department. Thus, a number of people at the State Department or at USCIS would know if he were a noncitizen national or had been naturalized. And if his passport file shed some damning light on the subject, that would be public by now, since a number of people viewed it without authorization. He was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996; under the Illinois Constitution Art IV Sec 2(c), this office (which he held nearly eight years, including a re-election) requires US citizenship. He ran for the US House in 2000; under the US Constitution, Art I Sec 2 par 2 this office requires citizenship. He was elected to the Senate in 2004; under the US Constitution, Art I Sec 3 par 3, this office (which he held nearly four years) require citizenship. So the Illinois and US Senates obviously consider him a citizen: these institutions contain a number of people opposed to his political views. Finally, he was sworn as President before his political friends and foes alike, by the highest judicial officer, who is from the opposite party. In short, for Obama to be a foreign national, a noncitizen national, or a naturalized citizen would have required a conspiracy of gigantic sweep across the political spectrum and over many years

Considered in isolation, of course, it would not mean much that she decided during the Reagan era to immigrate to the US or that in the last Presidential election she supported the Republican campaign (one of the nastiest campaigns in recent memory). But such facts need not be considered in isolation. She has regularly appeared on rightwing talkshows. More to the point, her understanding of Venezuela today is probably colored by her brother's views. So let us remember briefly who her brother is:

Alonso looks like a retiree who stopped by for an afternoon cafecito. He's wearing blue sweatpants, tan sandals, and a turquoise T-shirt. Clamor from the espresso machine and blenders fills the room as a man in a button-down shirt carrying a briefcase strides through the bakery doors and beelines for the table. He silently drops a manila folder before Alonso.
The mystery man is Marlon Gutiérrez, a 45-year-old former Nicaraguan Contra. Alonso takes some papers from the folder and looks them over. They are bylaws for their new group, Fundación Interamericana por la Democracia, which will organize Guarimba resistance movements in Nicaragua, Cuba, and Venezuela ...

To establish the Independent Commission on the 2004 Coup d'Etat in the Republic of Haiti.
Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled,
SECTION 1. ESTABLISHMENT OF COMMISSION.
There is established in the legislative branch the Independent Commission on the 2004 Coup d'Etat in the Republic of Haiti (in this Act referred to as the `Commission').
SEC. 2. DUTIES.
(a) Duties - The Commission shall examine and evaluate the role of the United States Government in the February 2004 coup d'etat in the Republic of Haiti. In carrying out the preceding sentence, the Commission shall examine and evaluate the following:
(1) The extent to which the United States Government impeded the democratic process in Haiti, including the extent to which actions and policies of the United States Government contributed to the overthrow of the democratically-elected Government of Haiti.
(2) The circumstances under which Haitian President Jean-Bertrand Aristide resigned his office and went into exile in the Central African Republic, including the role of the United States Government in such resignation and exile.
(3) In the events leading up to the coup d'etat, the extent to which the United States Government fulfilled its obligations under article 17 of the Organization of American States (OAS) Inter-American Democratic Charter requiring that each OAS member country come to the aid of another OAS government under attack.
(4) The extent to which the United States Government impeded efforts by the international community, particularly efforts by Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries, to prevent the overthrow of the democratically-elected Government of Haiti.
(5) The role of the United States Government in influencing decisions regarding Haiti at the United Nations Security Council and in discussions between Haiti and other countries that were willing to assist in the preservation of the democratically-elected Government of Haiti by sending security forces to Haiti.
(6) The extent to which United States assistance was provided or United States personnel were used to support, directly or indirectly, the forces opposed to the government of President Aristide, including the extent to which United States bilateral assistance was channeled through nongovernmental organizations that were directly or indirectly associated with political groups actively involved in fomenting hostilities or violence toward the government of President Aristide.
(7) The involvement of the Central Intelligence Agency, directly or indirectly, in operations that contributed to the overthrow of the democratically-elected Government of Haiti.
(8) The impact of the International Republican Institute, the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs, and other organizations funded by the United States Agency for International Development on the political process in Haiti.
(9) The political and economic impact on Haiti of the decision by the United States Government to discontinue all United States bilateral assistance to Haiti and United States efforts to block loans and support for Haiti from international financial institutions.
(10) The broader implications for Haiti and the Caribbean region of the events culminating in the coup d'etat.
(b) Scope of Duties - In carrying out the duties described in subsection (a), the Commission may examine the actions and representations of the current Administration as well as prior Administrations.
SEC. 3. COMPOSITION OF COMMISSION.
(a) Members - The Commission shall be composed of 10 members, of whom --
(1) 3 members shall be appointed by the majority leader of the Senate;
(2) 2 members shall be appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives;
(3) 2 members shall be appointed by the minority leader of the Senate; and
(4) 3 members shall be appointed by the minority leader of the House of Representatives.
(b) Qualification Requirement; Deadline for Appointment; Meetings -
(1) NONGOVERNMENTAL APPOINTEES - An individual appointed to the Commission may not be an officer or employee of the Federal Government or any State or local government.
(2) DEADLINE FOR APPOINTMENT - All members of the Commission shall be appointed not later than 45 days after the date of the enactment of this Act.
(3) MEETINGS - The Commission shall meet at the call of the Chairperson or a majority of its members.
(c) Chairperson; Vice Chairperson - The Chairperson and Vice Chairperson of the Commission shall be elected by the members of the Commission.
(d) Quorum; Vacancies - Six members of the Commission shall constitute a quorum. Any vacancy in the Commission shall not affect its powers, but shall be filled in the same manner in which the original appointment was made.
SEC. 4. POWERS OF COMMISSION.
(a) Hearings and Sessions -
(1) IN GENERAL - The Commission shall, for the purpose of carrying out this Act, hold public hearings and meetings to the extent appropriate, sit and act at times and places, take testimony, and receive evidence as the Commission considers appropriate.
(2) ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS -
(A) PUBLIC HEARINGS- Any public hearings of the Commission shall be conducted in a manner consistent with the protection of information provided to or developed for or by the Commission as required by any applicable statute, regulation, or Executive order.
(B) PUBLIC VERSIONS OF REPORTS - The Commission shall release public versions of the reports required under section 8.
(b) Subpoena Power -
(1) IN GENERAL - The Commission may issue a subpoena to require the attendance and testimony of witnesses and the production of evidence relating to any matter under investigation by the Commission.
(2) FAILURE TO OBEY AN ORDER OR SUBPOENA - If a person refuses to obey a subpoena issued under paragraph (1), the Commission may apply to a United States district court for an order requiring that person to appear before the Commission to give testimony, produce evidence, or both, relating to the matter under investigation. The application may be made within the judicial district where the hearing is conducted or where that person is found, resides, or transacts business. Any failure to obey the order of the court may be punished by the court as civil contempt.
(3) SERVICE OF SUBPOENAS - The subpoenas of the Commission shall be served in the manner provided for subpoenas issued by a United States district court under the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure for the United States district courts.
(c) Contract Authority - The Commission may, to such extent and in such amounts as are provided in appropriation Acts, enter into contracts to enable the Commission to discharge its duties of this Act.
(d) Information From Federal Agencies - The Commission may secure directly from any Federal department or agency information necessary to enable it to carry out this Act. Upon request of the Chairperson of the Commission, the head of that department or agency shall provide that information to the Commission.
(e) Assistance From Federal Agencies -
(1) GENERAL SERVICES ADMINISTRATION - The Administrator of General Services shall provide to the Commission on a reimbursable basis administrative support and other services for the performance of the Commission's duties.
(2) OTHER DEPARTMENTS AND AGENCIES - In addition to the assistance described in paragraph (1), departments and agencies of the United States may provide to the Commission such services, funds, facilities, staff, and other support services as they may determine advisable and as may be authorized by law.
(f) Gifts- The Commission may accept, use, and dispose of gifts or donations of services or property.
(g) Postal Services- The Commission may use the United States mails in the same manner and under the same conditions as departments and agencies of the United States.
SEC. 5. STAFF OF COMMISSION.
(a) Appointment and Compensation - The Chairperson of the Commission, in consultation with the Vice Chairperson of the Commission, in accordance with rules agreed upon by the Commission, may appoint and fix the compensation of a staff director and such other personnel as may be necessary to enable the Commission to carry out its duties, without regard to the provisions of title 5, United States Code, governing appointments in the competitive service, and without regard to the provisions of chapter 51 and subchapter III of chapter 53 of such Act relating to classification and General Schedule pay rates, except that no rate of pay fixed under this subsection may exceed the equivalent of that payable for a position at level V of the Executive Schedule under section 5316 of title 5, United States Code.
(b) Detailees - Any Federal Government employee may be detailed to the Commission without reimbursement from the Commission, and such detailee shall retain the rights, status, and privileges of his or her regular employment without interruption.
(c) Consultant Services - The Commission is authorized to procure the services of experts and consultants in accordance with section 3109 of title 5, United States Code, but at rates not to exceed the daily rate paid a person occupying a position at level IV of the Executive Schedule under section 5315 of title 5, United States Code.
SEC. 6. COMPENSATION AND TRAVEL EXPENSES.
(a) Compensation - Each member of the Commission may be compensated at a rate not to exceed the daily equivalent of the annual rate of basic pay in effect for a position at level IV of the Executive Schedule under section 5315 of title 5, United States Code, for each day during which that member is engaged in the actual performance of the duties of the Commission.
(b) Travel Expenses - While away from their homes or regular places of business in the performance of services for the Commission, members of the Commission shall be allowed travel expenses, including per diem in lieu of subsistence, in the same manner as persons employed intermittently in the Government service are allowed expenses under section 5703 of title 5, United States Code.
SEC. 7. SECURITY CLEARANCES FOR COMMISSION MEMBERS AND STAFF.
(a) In General - Subject to subsection (b), the appropriate Federal agencies or departments shall cooperate with the Commission in expeditiously providing to the Commission members and staff appropriate security clearances to the extent possible pursuant to existing procedures and requirements.
(b) Exception - No person shall be provided with access to classified information under this Act without the appropriate required security clearance access.
SEC. 8. REPORTS OF COMMISSION; TERMINATION.
(a) Interim Reports - The Commission may submit to Congress and the President interim reports containing such findings, conclusions, and recommendations for corrective measures as have been agreed to by a majority of Commission members.
(b) Final Report - Not later than 18 months after the date of the enactment of this Act, the Commission shall submit to Congress and the President a final report containing such findings, conclusions, and recommendations for corrective measures as have been agreed to by a majority of Commission members.
(c) Form of Report - Each report prepared under this section shall be submitted in unclassified form, but may contain a classified annex.
SEC. 9. TERMINATION.
(a) In General - The Commission, and all the authorities of this Act, shall terminate 60 days after the date on which the final report is submitted under section 8(b).
(b) Administrative Activities Before Termination - The Commission may use the 60-day period referred to in paragraph (1) for the purpose of concluding its activities, including providing testimony to committees of Congress concerning its reports and disseminating the final report.
SEC. 10. AUTHORIZATION OF APPROPRIATIONS.
(a) In General - There is authorized to be appropriated to carry out this Act $5,000,000 for fiscal year 2010.
(b) Availability - Amounts appropriated pursuant to the authorization of appropriations under subsection (a) are authorized to remain available until the date on which the Commission terminates pursuant to section 9(a).

underscores a point often forgotten: some of the US bio-weapons scientists are really rather odd folk, whose fantasies make most of us cringe
I agree that it is unlikely that HIV/AIDS was designed in a government lab and then deliberately released into US minority communities -- because neither the pace of biological research in the 1970s, nor the currently-known epidemiological history of HIV/AIDS, lends plausibility to the theory
Nevertheless, although I disbelieve the theory myself, I find it easy to understand why a person, with a non-technical background and a certain knowledge of history, might regard the theory as plausible:
First, there is a long history of US officials experimenting with unwitting populations, including: a deliberate long-term non-treatment of African-American syphilitics so the US Public Health Service could determine by autopsy the effects of untreated syphilis, extensive experimentation (by the CIA) with the effects of LSD on unsuspecting persons, and deliberate exposure to radiation of large populations (by the Atomic Energy Commission)
Second, by the late 1960s, some bio-weapons researchers were considering the possibility of developing, within a decade, a new infectious disease that side-stepped existing immunological responses -- and HIV/AIDS was recognized approximately within that time frame
Thus, although Reverend Wright was probably completely wrong here, perhaps his beliefs do not prove him a total crack-pot but simply highlight his non-technical background
Aug 26, 2008 (CIDRAP News) – US Navy and Air Force officials recently reported a suspension of work in their biodefense laboratories to allow a thorough review of safety procedures, following the Army's announcement in early August that it would review security measures at the lab that housed the work of the late Bruce E. Ivins, whom federal officials believe played a role in the 2001 anthrax attacks.
The FBI's Aug 6 announcement of its conclusion that Ivins was responsible for the attacks came 9 days after he apparently committed suicide. Ivins had worked at the US Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID) for years, doing research that included work on anthrax vaccines. Shortly after the 2001 attacks he had also helped the FBI analyze anthrax samples, according to media reports.

Avoid getting into a discussion about whether global warming is really occurring, whether human activities are causing global warming, or what the exact impacts of global warming would be: those are scientific questions, which must be decided by scientific methods. Avoid calling people rightwingers or using other politically charged language. A very polite letter, containing your concerns in writing, might be a better than an attempt at a verbal debate on global warming
(1) You are concerned that the teacher seems to be misusing the school science class as a propaganda outlet. The purpose of a school science class is to teach students something about how modern science works: how experts produce and improve scientific knowledge by developing and testing scientific theories

One way or the other, Vernon Dahmer Sr. was a dead man.

Earlier this year the Mississippi legislature passed and the Governor signed into law Senate bill 2988, the most draconian employer sanctions law passed to date in the U.S. that further criminalizes workers, especially immigrants, and opens the door for employers to discriminate against Latinos and others.
SB 2988 makes it a felony to work without authorization in Mississippi. SB 2988 imposes a one to five year prison sentence and hefty fines of $1,000 to $10,000. No one has yet been charged under SB 2988 ...

Anyone charged with the crime of working without papers will not be eligible for bail. The law is set to become effective on July 1.
In Mississippi, African American political leaders and immigrant and labor organizers have cooperated in organizing one of the country's most active immigrant rights coalitions —the Mississippi Immigrant Rights Alliance (MIRA). They see hope for political transformation in the demographic changes sweeping the south. In the Jackson Clarion-Ledger, University of Mississippi journalism professor Joe Atkins called the law "a new xenophobia...that threatens once again to lock down the state's borders and resurrect the ‘closed society' that once made it the shame of the nation." According to MIRA, the bill got the support of many Democratic state legislators because party leaders "wanted the house to bring out at least one bill dealing with immigration to relieve the political pressure being put on members (i.e., white Democrats) by right-wing forces in their districts. Many Black Caucus members were persuaded to go along. Unfortunately, the bill they brought out was the worst of the six the Mississippi Senate passed" ...
